Sonic the Hedgehog #160 features a reused piece of Sonic Adventure artwork in its Off-Panel section. Curiously, however, the artwork is edited slightly to depict Sonic fully blinking with blue eyelids.

As for the distinction, later issues would establish him as a separate character from Metal Sonic. So even if the staff ever did intend him to be the same character as Metal Sonic, it would have been retconned as of issue #170. (3/3)

@Mattrex244 Ah, you're probably correct. They did something similar with Mammoth Mogul in the paperback version of the "Darkest Storm" arc. They recolored his clothes in every panel to match the white outfit he used in the following issues.
