There are some people or types of content that I don't feel comfortable or safe interacting with. Please respect my boundaries. Please stop making posts about how I blocked you. Please stop going into my friend's DMs to ask why I blocked you; they will not give you an answer.
@PersonthePerso2
As a former marketing manager, it's always hilarious to me that people think that this kind of attitude will make people want to buy the game. The fact that the dev has pretty much signed off on this kind of behavior has only kneecapped its broader appeal for its limited niche.
@AppleSlipper
I ended up blocking them for the negativity and overwhelming disrespect to the writers and writing process
Sega obviously values Ian's work or they wouldn't keep him. Him pitching ideas and the company curating them is NORMAL. That's supposed to happen. It's not a bad thing!
So it's been a few days since the last shipping fiasco, I wanted to wait until most of the "drama" died down before talking about something.
I'd like to talk about why shipping tweets like these are insulting and disrespectful to both shippers and the fandom 🧵
@kumo_zd
Cue the 30 minute long debate segment where they try to figure out what the numbers mean, while the audience is screaming "WE KNOW WHAT IT MEANS ALREADY"
Also I could absolutely see Silver being a good Makoto Naegi stand-in lol.
Fantastic art!
@PersonthePerso2
Also I bought and tried the game. It's aggressively *fine.* I thought the gameplay was good (except combat) and the writing felt a little poor. I probably would have liked it more had I not been already poisoned by the fanbase acting like it's the second coming of Christ.
Anyways here is a clip of RCS explaining and defending the change in vocal register.
It's one thing if you just personally don't like it, but there's no need to try to make it a more "valid" opinion by putting words in the mouths of the VAs based on an out of context clip.
@saltydkdan
Mario fans trying to one-up the Sonic fanbase by speedrunning a hypersensitive culture incapable of handling themselves when other people don't share their opinion.
@Mollar_Eclipse
@PersonthePerso2
Eh, it's just shitty marketing/behavior and it doesn't hurt anyone but the dev himself. The game itself is fine so like if you're into what Spark is selling it's still fine to buy. Just go in expecting it to be a good game and not some "Sega hire this man" death knell for Sonic.
I wish people would put this kind of fire and effort into defending actual, real queer folk instead of arguing with internet randos about which fictional characters are/aren't allowed to kiss each other.
@Mollar_Eclipse
@PersonthePerso2
Yep, the last time this drama happened, it was because a youtuber made a video that pretty blatantly did the kind of thing. It spawned this same kind of drama. Dev danced around the issue by claiming the issue was the "comparison" and not the rhetoric, but basically approved it.
I made some fanart of Sonic from
@Hauringu_arts
"We're Dancing in Fire" AU.
Not gonna lie, I really like what I've seen of her concept and would love to be able to write something for it as well! I can't wait to see it when it comes out!
@BalisticEmerald
@PersonthePerso2
From a marketing perspective, the only logical reason to have an adversarial follower base like this is to disincentivize interacting with other products and further entrench them in your own niche. Less about getting new people and locking in the ones you already have.
@gareki_sh
I'm very sorry to hear that this happened to you. I really liked reading your manga in English, because my Japanese isn't good. I respect your decision to not translate though.
@thatboy_studio
I'm normally not big on human versions but I think this design nails it on the head! The clothes have his 90s attitude down, and the art style really emphasizes a speed aesthetic. I can just imagine him running down an alleyway before breakdancing into a spinning kick.
@PersonthePerso2
People saying "Sonic stories should be like a Saturday Morning cartoon" when the literal SatAM Sonic cartoon was nothing like the meta era game writing.
What the fuck is wrong with people in the qrts just let people enjoy shit they like
If you don't like it that's cool, I'm glad you have your own interests, you don't have the fucking right to dogpile someone for fucking posting screenshots
@RealShadowFan01
Sega hasn't forgotten, they are just looking to spite you specifically.
They're not going to stop until everyone else has forgotten about him and you're surrounded by people who only know him as "Black and Red Sonic."
@xmollq
It honestly feels like most of the people saying that crap only do because they just don't like the ship and want to invent a reason to shame people for liking it.
Ain't gonna stop me lol.
@AChimanatic
@09emenems2
Completely agreed, I'm so glad that they pulled away from the exaggerated edginess and let him be more reserved and serious like he used to be. Ian's voice acting really complimented his dialogue. It was a great foil to an impulsive Sonic.
I wish he was given more screen time.
@BalisticEmerald
@PersonthePerso2
There *are* exceptions, like Sega's own "Nintendon't" campaign, but that was a wildly different era in gaming with untapped markets that have been thoroughly tapped into. It doesn't work as well anymore now, especially for an already *existing* market.
@Zhane_Star
Seeing people using past trauma to justify shit like this and all I can think is that they're just abusers too.
I was bullied almost every waking moment until I was an adult. I could never understand how some other victims rationalize the perpetuation of hate/violence.
@AppleSlipper
It's okay for him to not like it if Sega disagrees with his ideas. If they thought the writing was bad, they would either let him go or would ask him to redo it. Getting mad at him for doing the thing Sega asks him to do is just blaming the party with no power in this situation.
Hi again. I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to read what we had to say-- doubly so for those who left words of support. All we really wanted was our side to be heard, and I think we accomplished that.
@S0NADOW
I can say this as someone who has written a 300,000 word (and counting) "toxic sonadow fic"
Anyone complaining about "the real dynamic" or that people are shipping characters "wrong" need to go outside and touch some grass. No one asked you "how to do it right."
@Hyeon_sonic
I really love how you made Sonic in the background far more detailed than Shadow-- it's a subtle thing, but it really adds to the unsettling vibes!
@coalchan01
We've tried to resolve things quietly since the day they started, we wrote this doc because we felt we had no other choice.
Please repost this if you can- we can't stop the rumors, but people need to know what's happening to us. And please don't attack anyone over this.
@VenusOfChaos
"2 Genders"
Thanks for the suggestion! Of course, we can definitely add 2 more genders for you. We'll keep finding new ones to add every time you say it.
Fun tip! If a homophobic SonicTuber is causing you to get dogpiled for enjoying a gay ship, you can use the "Twitter Block with Love" extension to block them and everyone who has ever liked or retweeted their post in one go!
Link and instructions here:
And to take it a step further: why *should* we limit ourselves to "canon" interpretations? AUs are built all the time that can recontextualize or change elements of a character. Fanworks are by their nature noncanon. Why *do* they need to be rigidly attached to source material?
What one person might consider "canon" may not match up with other's ideas. People who read different media, or interpret the same media in a different light, will not have the same conclusions as you.
And that's okay! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
@whisperwoIf
The sad reality of the situation is that SEGA is never going to consider any romance until their fans stop breaking out into fights every single time anything slightly spicier than "friends" is hinted at-- something this fanbase has proven incapable of doing again and again.
@FluffyNinja7
@PersonthePerso2
The guy who created it has literally said this kind of thing is okay the last time this drama blew up. Don't feel bad for him, this is what he wants.
This meme trend is supposed to be people's hot takes on certain Sonic ships. It's supposed to be opinions that could make people upset, I realize that.
But this isn't a tweet criticizing Sonadow as a ship
It's a tweet telling shippers they're doing it "the wrong way."
"Death of the Author" is a thing for a reason. Other people can find ways to use canon to justify what you might personally consider "noncanon" or "not understanding" of a character. Especially for Shad/Knux, who have been extensively recharacterized by SEGA over the years.
There's nothing wrong with discussing one's personal opinions, or even having spirited debates over them. But at the end of the day, they are still *opinions.* Having an "I'm right and you're wrong" attitude only makes the space hostile, and (cont.)
If anything the lesson people should take away from this is that the organizers messed up and should not have proactively ejected anyone out of the convention without discussing it with all parties involved.
Guys, I am exhausted.
I didn't have Ricardo kicked out of the event today or ask to have him on a blacklist. I stepped away when he got near to keep my distance and people around me took it upon themselves to mention that I was uncomfortable to the staff.
The reason why I'm laying all this out is because it's foundational to why I really dislike this tweet: it's saying "No, you don't actually like what you say you like, you like something else and are either lying about it or just don't know enough to do it 'correctly.'"
Fandom is built on interpretation of source material. Sonic has had decades of media across multiple mediums, hundreds of writers and artists, and countless characterizations of its cast. And everyone reading it is going to have their own interpretation of the characters.
‼️DISCLAIMER‼️
This whole "fan/parody account" copypasta is based off of misinfo and fearmongering. Even if you were the target of the guidelines in question, a tweet is explicitly NOT how you stay in compliance. Please don't just uncritically accept something you read online.
People who make shipping content largely do it based on their ideas for the characters "true nature"-- even AUs will almost always have some basis in canonicity. It's incredibly condescending to say that their own views are wrong, when yours is no more valid than theirs.
@TangleFoxSFW
@AndTails1
What honestly concerns me as a gay+trans person is that this kind of policing opens the door for open bigots to do the same on people who have queer or trans hcs. Trying to lower others over raising your own platform only serves to show others that they can do the same.
Multiple mutuals and people I really like have said that they no longer feel comfortable or happy about making Sonadow content after this recent round of drama.
This isn't a hypothetical. It has already hurt creators, and will continue to do so any time it's given traction.
@coalchan01
The fact people are upset over something as banal as this is so incredibly despicable that it hurts.
Anyone willing to throw abusive language at you for this drawing should be disgusted with themselves, and I hope that they live with that feeling for the rest of their lives.
STOP USING THE
#CeasefireNOW
TAG TO SPREAD SONIC MEMES. YOU ARE LITERALLY FLOODING A TAG FOR WAR CRIMES AND OPPRESSION WITH SPAM AND MAKING IT HARD TO SPREAD INFORMATION WHEN GAZA HAS ITS INTERNET CUT OFF.
IT'S NOT CUTE OR FUNNY. IF YOU WANT TO HELP FUCKING TALK ABOUT PALESTINE.
I had a very hilarious interaction in DMs earlier, so I'm going to take the time to make myself even more plainly obvious:
I am a gay adult. If the fact I consume content meant for gay adults really bothers you, please take your unchecked homophobia and leave.
Thank you! ❤️
But please, let's refrain from confusing our opinions for fact. And *please, please* don't use your own opinions as an opportunity to put others down. It hurts real people, and drives them away. Let's instead make this fandom as welcoming, diverse, and inclusive as it can be.
@coalchan01
Acquiesing to someone's abuse only encourages it. If you have to take insults from someone in order for them to like you then they aren't your friend.
If they're truly a friend, they will apologize for their hurtful actions- a better friend wouldn't have said those things.
@_envee_
This is probably not true. Sega has steered away from a lot of things, including ALL forms of romance. They also have two canon gay characters in IDW (Nite/Don).
The issue at hand is Sega wants to avoid shipping wars, they're bad for business. It's as simple as that.
@_envee_
Sega... can't ban ships? I don't even know what you're trying to say.
They can't make rules for the fanbase or directly control it. They absolutely can and will avoid throwing fuel into the fire, though. Hence why they want to avoid another sonally/sonamy fiasco.
shames other creators for the simple act of making content that they like. It burns people out, makes them not want to do things they'd normally enjoy, and turns people away who could have contributed their own talents and passion into something they love.
@Zhane_Star
I hate how quickly people with no clue about what they're talking about get whipped up into a frenzy.
It looks too perfect? It's AI.
It has some weird imperfections? AI.
This scanner with an unknown accuracy claims it's AI.
It looks too much like styles AI tends to make. AI!
Friendly reminder that you can always just try privately talking to someone when misunderstandings arise. It makes things a lot easier for everyone, especially when the people involved want to reconcile.
@Zhane_Star
Social media (especially on twt/tumblr) has a tendency to reduce thought to the lowest common denominator and it's frustrating. Something innocuous or weird suddenly gets essentialized to the person itself. Thinking of the "Space Buns" girl who suddenly was labeled anti-black.
@YoItsMeSidar
@3Caramelg122
There's actually a slider to change that in the settings now! It's "set the rate of deceleration." There's others that preserve boost and acceleration in jumps too.
I tried using it at 0 and it had Sonic slipping all over the place. Ended up putting it back but it's there.
@coalchan01
Wow, this looks so cool! I really love how it looks.
Also don't mind me just sobbing at the fact I'm getting fanart for something that isn't even out yet jdksfjskj
@_F_R_A_I_L_
@coalchan01
@ShipsLucia
I'm glad you like it so much! And yes, your comment about "cartoon logic" is spot on-- Coal and I decided his superpowers are all based on old cartoon gags, and it confuses Terios and everyone else quite a bit!
To start off, I'd just like to say that I don't think the OP is intentionally mean-spirited. I get they probably have frustrations with content they don't like. My issues aren't with their opinion on the ship.
In fact, that's kind of the problem here.
Hell, if you don't find the myriad of other content fitting-- you're always free to write your own and share it! You'd be surprised by how convincing you can be just by writing content you're passionate about. Maybe you'll introduce them to an idea they hadn't thought of.
The whole reason fandoms coined the term "headcanon" is *because* source material analysis can lead to multiple conclusions. We recognized long ago that trying to enforce one interpretation of canon doesn't just cause tension in fandom, it actively stifles participation.
My copy of
@oo_oo_ll_ll
's "CHANGE!" finally came in, and it was well worth the wait! I really enjoyed it, and I love the sticker designs as well. I hope they're able to print another run of these at some point, because I truly think more people should read it!
@Zhane_Star
Unleashed can honestly just call it a day with a port
At this point I'd rather they remake the Adventure games from the ground up. I dont even know if they have the DC base game and the GC "remasters" they keep releasing have so many issues.
@Hauringu_arts
Poor Shadow! I'm just imagining how that happened-- like Sonic accidently got a wad of gum stuck in his quills that they couldn't pull out, so they had to shave them off 😭
Whispangle is a good ship too but like, going after people who ship other pairs (which might not even make the characters 'straight') accomplishes nothing. If you want more/better representation then you should be encouraging producers to make more diverse queer content.
@coalchan01
My initial idea is that it was originally something that Sonic had, though probably crammed in the back of a drawer or closet-- once taken for granted, now priceless. At the time, it still smelled faintly of him, and the warmth it brought felt like a hug around Shadow's neck.
