PhD admissions through MCQ based questions was already a debate and now NET taking over as a deciding factor for PhD really puts all in concern asking a basic question. What is a PhD? What amounts to doing a PhD? A thread-
One more NET exam and once again students are confused, frustrated thinking they have not known enough or have not studied enough. This exam can never ever reach a satisfaction. Just may treat it as an unnecessary marker of aptitude. More so for research and PhD! 😓

Are we seriously going to trust NTA all over again after NEET and NET fiasco? Do they have any iota of shame and guilt? Do they expect us to pretend like nothing happened and repose our faith again?
#ShameOnNTA
I am literally in shock seeing the ever increasing aggression and petty unprofessional behaviour as a teacher rise up in the mushrooming of a zillion so-called teachers for UGC NET. It saddens me as when I started off 6 years back I was ready to learn from the mistakes—
A burning issue I see and realise these days with Indian higher academia is that how we are stressing over writings skills and publications but no focus in teaching skills. A good writer might not be a good ‘teacher’ as such. How do we address it? A rant/thought.
Conferences in Europe/UK/USA on South Asia be like : there are no funds, seek funds from your institutions.
Arre South Asia se hain, PhD ke liye scholarships/funds hai nahi, institutional funding milega for foreign travels and accommodations?Delusional demented idiots.
I am curious to know if the ones setting the question papers for NET across disciplines are themselves aware of the ‘chronology of books and thinkers’ based questions. How perfunctory can you get? Why can’t they ask themselves if such questions will help in professorship???
#EducationMinisterMustResign
Shame on you. For a country like I India where millions of students have to travel thousands of miles for exam centres, with no formal training of OMR sheet, now suffer. Realise, what it takes for a country like India to get fairly educated.
My random desi uncle was all about how India’s GDP is soaring high. When I spoke about the job market how assistant prof jobs are getting hijacked and academia is a sad space, least transparency in recruitments, he gaslighted me into thinking I chose the wrong profession.
Any tips on how to multitask during a PhD manage a part time job and content creating without procrastinating and missing deadlines?!

Strange how our education system still has come to no improvement regarding NET exams. This article from 2017 by my teacher, Avijit Pathak sir remains relevant till date more than ever!
A prolonged research scholarship, which culminates through years of experiential and theoretical exposure. A good researcher might not be aware of objective bullet points based questions.Admission to PhD getting decided by such an exam puts the quality of Indian PhD into concern.
If such is the case, then really hoping NET exams to raise its quality and reduce random GK based questions, massive answer key errors and focus more on conceptual and analytical understanding of the subject and maybe paying more attention to the research methodology section.
Mere mugging up facts and producing Chat GPT written PhD proposals can only see a low in the coming years of Indian academia. Miss those days of subjective writing based exams during my time!
Once in a blue moon forced presence at social gatherings, giving absolute unhinged poses to my sister and getting that ONE picture after a hundred.
Performance at its peak. Things academics do to hide the miseries of deadlines.

It is so important to call out the toxic academic culture wherein one is always put down upon, demotivated, told they are worthless. Such methods do no good to researchers. Especially if one is in between writing. So many things I would never imagine doing to students.
I really question my years of being in academics and not know the relevance of ‘chronology’ of books and theories questions. There is less analysis and more route learning you see! Sad to see students especially from vernacular mediums.
Came across a few Call for Papers where they are also instructing step-by-step how to submit the conference proposal/abstract. I really think it’s a good initiative where many students from global south, first generation learners, non-English experts can at least have an idea!
Teachers are obsessing over not accepting that paper was difficult and that many answers to certain questions are unsure of. With no basic understanding of the discipline one is teaching, such teachers are making tall claims. Who are we fooling? How far can one go so shallow!
Having taught for NET exams over 6 yrs now, as much as I critically understand this exam, one cannot but criticise the shortcuts that students helplessly seek, dependent on rote learning. As a teacher and research scholar, I can only hope to see an end to this for PhDs at least!
PhD admissions through MCQ based questions was already a debate and now NET taking over as a deciding factor for PhD really puts all in concern asking a basic question. What is a PhD? What amounts to doing a PhD? A thread-
One can only get exhausted being in this sector. I personally do not believe in such a rat race. Just copy-paste-PDF culture needs to stop. Is this how we expect our future assistant profs/phd candidates to be trained? So frustrated!
I have been lately receiving such messages on LinkedIn. I would like to point out some crucial issues with this which is need of the hour in regards to research in India—
Oh my. Terribly high fever for the last couple of days and the amount of nightmares I have had about my PhD is insane. The hallucinations have run far, deep and senile.
Many Sociology questions are copy pasted from Anthony Giddens book on Sociology which are not accessible by Hindi medium students. One can go on and on about such hierarchical patterns of questioning no least accessibility.
It is indeed hilarious to see privileged routinised ‘chamchas’ and bootlickers in academia give lectures on merit, point fingers at others who are trying to get their work done otherwise. Only when things are not in their favour, the conscience emerges immediately. 😮💨🤮
How to make detailed annotated bibliography more systematic at the onset of PhD? Should I use a word or excel sheet so that it’s easy to access even after couple of years?

Remember folks - not everyone on Youtube is a teacher.
Because the entry barrier is so low that anyone can become anything on the internet. Kids in first year start "teaching" for entrance exams and coaching academies in general are piss poor in quality.

Lately, while teaching Goffman and his dramaturgy to my students, I went back to his 1956 publication ‘The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life’ and it was such a nostalgic experience, reminded me of undergrad days and the relevance that this text holds till date as sociologists!
On Tagore’s birth anniversary, I reflect on my childhood how I started singing Rabindrasangeet when I was 4. It remained with me till date and will continue to do so till my heart sings the emotions of love or despair. In this world of GenZ music, I choose to be this oldschool.
Writing a 200 words abstract for conferences/ publications is the most difficult thing to do. Feel like a ninja slicing the whole paper into a tiny piece trying to prove a point.
@PhDVoice
Just overheard two people at the salon smirk and say that I am possibly a ‘Bangladeshi’ after I spoke in Sylheti on phone. These linguistic politics have so much to say. Often tagged as Bangals/Bangladeshis to any dialect of Bengali which does not sound mainstream.
I have always felt a 250 word abstract sent for conferences is a farce. How on earth is one supposed to understand intricate arguments and thoughts from this? It’s more like an entitled practice within academia! Bleh.

Posing a serious threat to the quality of higher education and research in India, the question remains, who are offering such services? With the rise in unemployment post Masters’ programme, lack of lucrative job prospects, students are left with no option but participate in such.
Especially students with non-English and unprivileged backgrounds, despite getting through a PhD programme, are not able to write due to lack of training, no focus on intensive reading, depending on short cut notes. How are such aspirants supposed to build arguments?
Delhiites cannot even post rain pictures peacefully. From initial calm to all new ruckus of roads flooding and roofs collapsing. Like some thriller movie which sets off so unpredictably that it gradually gets sinister as you go ahead with it.
Gave my opinion on the recent NET held on 18th June 2024. Now that it stands cancelled, pushes us more to ponder on this. ‘Is anything even going to change?’

fair enough, subjective papers have their own biases and loopholes, however the concern raised here is that of PhD and not some entrance exams, PhD scholarship cannot be determined by a sub-standard exam like NET unless the quality is raised and made favorable to all
Where tragedy meets joy!
Just watched Laapataa Ladies and am amazed by its comical yet satirical delivery following the cue of mistaken identity, veiled women from Tagore’s Noukadubi (1906).

While being sick with fever recently, my mind has gone all ways contemplating life. Here are some observations. Why are we so scared to show the world that we might be vulnerable, weak, helpless, wanting some warmth and comfort? Often adulting expects you to be strong~
With the rise in MCQ based competitive exams for entrance as well as PhD, majority of the prospective scholars are failing to meet minimum standards of preparing a well structured PhD proposal.
Whose Bengali are we catering to here? Sylhetis have seen the unfortunate brunt of Partition. Where are we supposed to be if not our own lands, falling prey to cartographic shifts. Not all can shift to the UK and claim pseudo diasporic sentiments!
I understand the joy that comes with buying new things but just CANNOT understand this trend of uploading pictures of book stacks after visiting any book fair. Is it just me who finds it bizarre? When did books become a matter of social media show off!
When in India, those in a privileged position, mock you for your English accent and grammar, you don’t even realise how soooo many countries do not even speak or wish to speak English! Wondering where to use this accent once in Spain or Russia!🥲

Life can get you to test the amount of pain you can take. Talking about all sorts of physical pain, if period cramps were not enough, you now have unnecessary ‘wisdom tooth’ show up regularly with no wisdom to shower with. Oh myyyyy😪😭😭😭

Teaching for me has been nothing less than a passion! It’s been 6 years of teaching and helping millions of students virtually and the love I have received from each one of them has been paramount. The teacher in me would always say, ‘never give up! No matter what.’

Male ego be so fragile, cannot stand their female partner earn more. The hegemonic masculinity of being the dominant care giver shown is bizarre. And this is coming from men in academia trying to study ‘empowerment’ of all sorts.

i can’t believe we are at that point of history where the influencer culture has reached du profs who are too busy romanticising a warped image of academia when the reality is stark opp. i meet my ex profs and become more convinced how it keeps worsening.

12th Fail did not occur something out of the blue to me. It fell prey to the same idealistic melodramatic rant.We need more movies on the main characters not succeeding despite giving it all. Also, not even going on the caste based subtle jokes and UPSC attempts!

Haha try it Ankit. The commercialisation of NET exams from students-turned teachers is shocking! Nothing is limited anymore. In fact, I ask myself, Who is a ‘teacher’ today?

The point is, why can’t a ‘strong independent’ woman also express that it’s unmanageable at times? Why does it always have to be about strength and resilience. Recently, a friend just passingly mocked me by saying ‘so you aren’t that strong and independent after all!’ Huh?
I think the issue lies in the fact that we have equated vulnerability with weakness and weakness has always been a vice. Strong and smart people are seldom weak right?Or else there won’t be a surge in the selling of self-help books? What are we normalising at the end of the day?
@sharma_alok_
Indian academia these days have become more or less like a mafia. I agree to these gimmicky interviews which eventually should be banned.
As if astrology based apps were not enough in India that one has to see their hilarious ads that keep popping up here and there where all that men worry about is getting sarkari jobs and women: how to get BF back after breakup, get married, get pregnant.

The whole idea of an MCQ based paper for screening PhD and assistant professor eligibility is bizarre in its core. However, there are examples of DSE setting in MA papers which are highly critical and passage based. Have a look at that.
All of us laughed to Takeshi’s Castle and the failed attempts made by the participants. Little did we know, adulting and academia would be nothing less!
