The idea that all we can ever know or see is symptoms/effects and that we can never know or see conditions/causes is among the more persistent and pernicious idealisms of the present. It's also really fucking depressing kind of intellectual and political nihilism.

Last week, the UAW presented an offer to the UC that made significant compromises on their initial demands. After promising a quick response, the UC sat on the offer for multiple days & finally submitted a response at midnight over the weekend. They offered a raise of 7.5%. >

Strikes me that one bad consequence of 20th c Marxist cultural theory's obsession w/ the commodity fetish and of Ch. 1 is that emphasis on the commodity & reification makes it hard to understand the kinds of labor--many organized along capitalist lines--that don't produce things.

@MarissaBrostoff Good lord, that is a shitty email. Also not sure who the editors are but if--as is typically the case--they are faculty somewhere, they do indeed receive indirect "compensation" for that work, insofar as it's part of the way they develop a profesh profile as researchers.

at age 19, had a very crazy night hanging out with Hunter S. Thompson, Warren Zevon, and Johnny Depp.

Among the rank and file, new types and forms of organizational strength have emerged, as those in favor of remaining on strike organized—against many odds—a credible democratic resistance to a contract they thought was not transformative enough. >

Taught a piece from Jackie Wang's Carceral Capitalism alongside Foucault to my undergrad intro to theory course today and I cd literally see their minds being blown. It was such a powerful class and made me hella grateful for @LoneberryWang 's amazing work.

The initial demands would never have included COLA nor a transformative wage increase were it not for the radical energies of 2018 and 2020. After that, the concessions would have been even worse had the leadership not been afraid of a well-organized resistance to them. >

So very sorry to hear of David Golumbia's death--he was fierce and unafraid, a rigorous scholar and uncompromising critic. The world doesn't have many like him. Sending all the love to his family and friends.

I am very sad to inform this place, which he pretty much hated, that @dgolumbia died this morning. Any of his friends can contact me for further information. The love he shared with his friends and his brilliant research and writing are his legacy.

I don't normally share reviews but since I've published almost nothing else about my experience taking econ classes I figured I'd share this. Plus even tho I'm critical of the book, I def think it's worth engaging esp for those interested in biopolitics.

Yet another example of media obsession with the Ivies and other elite institutions of higher ed, an obsession that leads them over and over and over again to treat the LEAST representative institutions as if they stand in for higher ed in general.

Further, this strike has changed the terrain of what strikes look like in the UC, and in higher ed more broadly. Not only was this a far longer strike than this union has seen in the past, it was also far broader. >

Working on teaching students to commit to playful, experimental close reading this quarter and I would love to provide example paragraphs from academic essays/chapters where the reader writes in an extended way about a single word or short phrase. Ideas?

I too feel no sadness at the passing of Harold Bloom, a creepy racist harasser and misogynist who also had really fucking bad ideas. Let's be honest, ppl.

Fitting that Harold Bloom, famous for bemoaning the imminent death of the profession for the last 30 years, has died in 2019, now that the profession has died for reasons wholly unrelated to the things he bemoaned

Yesterday talking abt Graeber's death, a comrade said "The pathos of 'shit is fucked up & bullshit' was actually hopeful" & we talked about mourning not utopianists & also utopia itself in apocalyptic times. Woke up to more black ash on the sills. Shit is just REALLY fucked up.
