Great story as usual! Let me add a fun fact :)
ResusciAnne was also marketed as “Annie”, and CPR providers in the US were trained to check for response by asking, “Annie, are you okay? Are you okay, Annie?”
And that was incorporated into the lyrics of Smooth Criminal by MJ!
Sipping a fresh lime soda at Coffee House, Pune. Not many know that Duke's Soda was founded in 1889 by a Parsi guy, Dinshawji Pandole, who was also an amateur cricketer. He took a lot of wickets on a tour of England, and hence decided to name the co after the Duke's cricket ball!
Witnessing Prof.Dr.Saraswati M Padhye ma'am, in her 90s, holding the scalpel finely and cracking jokes while performing surgery in OT,actually made my day and is probably going to make my week.I believe, this is what passion for medicine looks like.

Saw this sign outside a Pune bar today, and my first thought was, “Hmm, it doesn’t look like THAT kind of a bar from outside.” Turns out this was one of several boards installed on the side of Dr Homi Bhabha Road showing different yoga positions 🙈
It's Dr Verghese Kurien's sixth death anniversary today, so I guess it's a good day for an Amul butter trivia thread. If you've had butter abroad, you'll know that it tastes quite different from Amul. Amul is saltier. The nutrition box will confirm this. Do you know why? (1/n)
#Amul
Topical: Our salute to Dr Kurien on his 6th death anniversary today🙏 a dream that made India the largest milk producing country in the world, GCMMF amongst the top 10 dairy companies of the world and Amul amongst the top 3 strongest dairy brands in the world..
Somebody I knew to be the most vivacious, cheerful, full-of-life person I’ve EVER met just committed suicide today. I met him last week for Diwali & even danced with him. Never failed to make anyone laugh. I’m crushed. Please check in on your close ones from time to time, people.
Today, over 60 years later, Polson Butter does not remain. But its distinct sour-salty taste carries on today with Amul Butter.
Hope the many years I've spent collecting trivia of this sort are of some use to you and you enjoyed this thread :) (7/7)
Another day, and another date with my girlfriend comes to an end. For my birthday, she got me a Polaroid camera, gave me a bunch of letters she wrote over the past few months, and a lovely birthday card she made with four Pune buildings on the cover!
I’m not crying, you are :’)
Fun fact: It was this very Mr MK Rasgotra who came up with the name “Chanakyapuri” for New Delhi’s diplomatic enclave built soon after independence, and later also names of the streets based on Chanakya’s principles (Shanti Path, Nyaya Marg, Vinay Marg, Satya Marg & Niti Marg)!
100 years young!
We celebrate a legend of the Indian Foreign Service today, former Foreign Secretary MK Rasgotra, who just turned 100.
A titan of his times, Foreign Secretary Rasgotra indeed is the
#GOAT
of IFS.
Wish him continued happiness and good health.

My favourite Marathi word from my time in Pune that I have incorporated into my Hindi is “traas”. Such a beautiful word. “Yaar, woh aadmi bohot traas deta hai.”
I’ve been accidentally called lots of names - Amol, Amul, Aman and even “Animal”. But the real kicker has to be the guy at the hospital cafeteria who calls me “David” because he remembers I share part of my name with David Dhawan - and he just can’t remember which part.
Today marks the beginning of a new phase in my relationship with my wonderful girlfriend, as she moves to the US for her masters. We’re going to be REALLY far away, but we’re pros at long-distance, and I’m hopeful about what the future holds for the both of us. ❤️
Lovely thread!
Fun fact: The cheapest properties on the London Monopoly board are in/near the “East End” of Central London, and costliest in the West End. This is because wind would blow from W to E, carrying smog & soot of industrial London eastwards, making those areas poorer.
A few weeks ago I was in London for the day. I took the first train down, & finished work by early afternoon.
My return train was at 8:46pm, so I spent the afternoon going round the Monopoly route.
I thought it would be interesting to photograph London at such a unique time.
What connects an English journalist, an iconic junction in the heart of Mumbai’s central business district, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, aerial bombing of London in WW2, and classical dancer Protima Bedi streaking at Juhu Beach? A thread 🧵 (1/n)

Results out! Cleared FRCR Part 1 in my first attempt :)
It was tough and required a lot of hard work in addition to working really hard at the hospital, and a fair bit of luck. And I made it! More than anything else, it’s a win for self-belief. I am soooooo happy today! ❤️
Just completed 14 continuous days in a COVID ward - it was extremely hard and gruelling - the work, the hours, the dehydration. I managed patients who were extremely sick, most of whom had high oxygen requirements. Glad I got to be part of a global effort to fight this disease.
My grandmother received this message from her cousin brother, and bought a lot of stuff and planned a nice dinner for him. Then she called him today to call him over, and asked where he was and he says “Hyderabad as usual.” Turns out the message was talking about Lord Ganesha! 😂

Last night I was at the AFMC cafeteria, when two medical students approached me and asked me, “Excuse me, are you THE Anmol Dhawan?” I still don’t know how they know me considering they joined college 3 years after I left, but it sure feels good :)
Hey, I’m moving to the US! Excited to share that I’ve been accepted into the Cardiopulmonary Imaging Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)! Looking forward to starting this new chapter at

Back on COVID duties starting tomorrow. While I don’t mind working there, I’m incredibly frustrated cause I’ve already done more twice as many COVID duties as the rest of my colleagues, and that I’m informed about this just the evening prior to my duty.
Send wishes please.
What a legend. He discovered the pathogenesis of the cholera toxin, and published that the toxin could kill simply by secreting water into the bowel. It was this discovery that led to widespread adoption of oral rehydration in cholera patients, directly saving millions of lives!
Today I went to Sassoon Hospital, Pune’s biggest hospital - built in 1863 from donations by David Sassoon, an Baghdadi Jewish businessman who made India his home.
Here’s the beautiful original building. Look at that foundation stone - with text in English, Marathi and Hebrew!

Last year, at 50, my father, a radiologist, decided to do a 1½ year course from UC Berkeley in a totally unrelated field that would add a lot of value to his work. He was the misfit - the only doctor out of 180. Finished in the top 10 yesterday. So proud! Hope I was as badass. :)
Jayakar Bungalow: old HQ of National Film Archives of India, Pune. Named after a lawyer & VC of Poona Univ who believed in giving grace marks to pass students. His name got anglicised to 'Jacker' at AFMC & other Pune colleges. 'Getting a jacker' still means passing w grace marks.
Since my girlfriend’s departure to the US, I keep a tab of the weather where she’s at. And while it’s mostly cloudy where I am… It’s always sunny in Philadelphia. :)
When it comes to connections between cities, there’s always so much more than meets the eye. Check out my latest blog post, which explores a few rather personal connections between the unlikely pair of Pune and Shanghai.
Do give it a read and share!
In 2016, I discovered that this Marathi actor Nilu Phule’s first job was that of a gardener at AFMC. I double checked it & informed the AFMC History Society - who thought this was quite cool.
In 2018, when I visit college, I see this new board, and smile :)
Today is the 12th death anniversary of the great Marathi actor, Nilu Phule.
So many memorable performances in films and theater!
He was particularly known for his villain roles... but also many other characters as well (e.g. a journalist in 'Sinhasan')
Happy Halloween! 🎃
Many in the west celebrate Halloween by displaying carved pumpkins outside their homes (like in this picture).
But today I’ll share with you an interesting story about a ‘pumpkin’ kept outside a house in Pune, with no relation to Halloween!

Going home for a few days. I just entered the aircraft and as I was walking to my seat, the guy seated beside me was like, “Anmol sir?”
I have officially arrived. 😎

Did you know that the history of the modern office chair can be traced to Charles Darwin? He refurbished an old chair by adding wheels on the bottom, so he could roll around his lab and reach his specimens more quickly! It’s the first known instance of a chair with wheels. :)
11-year old boy, very well-spoken and excellent at school. Gets a brain MRI after a seizure. And with it comes the diagnosis of a dreaded neuro-degenerative disease for which nothing much can be done. It’s truly heartbreaking. Makes one reflect on our own lives with gratitude.
Precisely two years ago, I slipped into someone’s DMs here on Twitter. If I had to pick one day that has changed my life the most, it would certainly be that day. It was the merriest Christmas. 🎄 ❤️

Took her to my favourite restaurant, showed her around my college, and gave her a personalised heritage walk of an old colonial era neighbourhood in Pune dotted with agiaries, Irani cafés, and a synagogue.
Dating for over 4 years now, and long-distance that too :)
The last two and a half years have been the hardest period of my life, and I’m so glad I’ve had my girlfriend with me throughout the way. Her support means the whole world to me, and I cannot imagine what I’d do without her. She is the best. ❤️
Signing off on my last night on-call as a resident. A big thank you to all these amazing people for making this whole process much easier! It was such a pleasure to work with all of them! ☘️
Setting a quiz is a painfully slow process - more than anything else due to the fact that I often find myself opening 17 tabs to verify and pick different bits of information & data to frame ONE question, and then putting it under “reserves” cause it didn’t “spark joy”.
A new resident joined today. As I walked into the room, he asked me if I was Anmol Dhawan. He then introduced himself to me, saying we’ve met before. I asked him when, and he said we had met on a flight sixteen years ago…. Is this what fame is supposed to feel like? :)
When I was in final year of medical college, the surgery SR once asked me how I’d investigate blunt abdominal trauma. I said, “Ultrasound or CT, either can be ordered depending on severity.” He then asked me, “What is FAST?”
And I replied, “Both are fast!” 😂😂
The Salar Jung Museum is absolutely spectacular. Please do visit if you’re in Hyderabad! Another post coming about a particular exhibit here! But for now, I must leave Hyderabad. I had a really good time here over the past couple of days, so thank you, Hyderabad! :)
Their products became very popular & they enjoyed a kind of monopoly in the Indian dairy market. But the milk farmers weren't paid well, & Amul was formed as a cooperative in response to Polson. Amul even introduced their own Butter Girl in response to Polson's Butter Girl. (4/n)
Revenge.
Legend has it that during the Emergency, Indira Gandhi’s govt had Air India construct its HQ (in white here) diagonal to the coast just so it obscures the sea view from Express Tower (in black here) - the offices of The Indian Express, a newspaper critical of Mrs Gandhi.
The city of Frankfurt is named after the Franks - a medieval Germanic tribe. The territory they ruled over came to be known as Francia - which is where France gets its name from. Even more interestingly, the Hindi & Urdu word for foreign - “firang” comes from the ‘Frank’ too. :)
@raxghav
More than 2 years, and long distance too. We’ve had just nine dates so far in two years. I do sometimes worry if we’ll make it. She reassures me every single time that we absolutely will. 🥺
I step out for a cup of coffee and see a woman sitting on the steps outside the hospital, crying her lungs out. Just then, it starts raining heavily. A few seconds later, she’s absolutely drenched. She doesn’t move an inch and is inconsolable. Such is the frailty of life.

This was because people were so used to the sour-salty taste of Polson Butter because of the sour cream, that they didn't like the taste of fresh butter. As a compromise, Amul decided to add salt & artificial flavouring to produce the sour taste of Polson Butter. (6/n)
Went to AFMC last evening to meet some juniors & seniors. Walking around the campus reliving old memories, walking into bookshops and cafeterias where people (still!) know you by name - it’s such a heartwarming feeling. Best years of my life. ❤️
The USP of Amul was freshness. Technological advances in dairy farming allowed the production of butter from cream collected the same day, which meant fresh butter that wasn't sour. But when Amul butter came out in 1955, it was a total failure. (5/n)
And that brings us to the end of this thread!
Hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed putting it together - in which case, please retweet :)
Thank you :)

Pune trivia meets pop culture trivia!
Did you know that the music video for “Ho Jayegi Balle Balle” by Daler Mehndi was shot at the Ohel David Synagogue (built by David Sassoon) in Pune? With a full troupe of background dancers and all! 🕺🏻🕍
An amazing thing happened yesterday! A senior was finding it difficult to communicate with a patient. I saw the patient’s name and thought it was an Arab name. So I just took a shot and asked him how he was, in Arabic... Both the patient and my senior flipped with disbelief!!! 😂

The ophthalmologist is likely suspecting floppy iris syndrome, a known adverse effect of the drug tamsulosin which can be used for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Netflix nudged me into watching The Crown after the Queen’s death, and that led me into an Olivia Colman rabbit hole. I watched a bunch of her interviews and acceptance speeches, and I cannot get over just how adorable she is! Truly the ‘human embodiment of a golden retriever’ :)
Presented a paper at

, the world’s largest radiology conference! Thrilled to have received this opportunity and met some amazing people out here!
Today, an unusual thing happened. When I was checking up on a patient in a ward, the patient on the bed next to him asked me if I had eaten lunch. I said yes, and asked him why. He just side-nodded his head Indian-style and said, “Good!”
Sometimes patients check up on us too :)
Okay, today we were invited for dinner to someone’s house in Hyderabad. They were lovely hosts and really cool people and all, but… They ordered biryani for us… From Behrouz? While living in Hyderabad?! Why would you do that?!
Today was my last working day here. These last few days here have been some of the most special, mostly thanks to the lovely residents who gave me such a wonderful farewell. Thank you all of you who made it this special! ❤️
Is it too late to upload a picture of myself smiling? :)
At Lullwater Preserve, a short walk from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, where I did a short elective course three years ago :)
Just got invited by the ophthal HOD to take a “guest lecture” on basic MRI sequences and MRI physics, in their department, for all of their faculty to attend, after I did a small impromptu talk on the same subject a few days back in front of some of them. Now this is a first! 😄
Here’s a thought that made me go wow today. On 20 June 1966, my father was born. On 20 June 1994, his 28th birthday, I was born. Today, I turn 28, and he turns 56. Today, I am exactly (to the day) as old as my father was, when I was born!
So, the mild itchy throat I’d had for a few days worsened this morning, and brought with itself a little dry cough. Went to get tested, and report’s out: COVID-positive. Isolating now.

Last weekend I found myself in Lajpat Nagar in Delhi, home to thousands of Afghan refugees, and many of the shop signs were in Dari. Yesterday, I was at the Main Bazar Rd in Paharganj, where many of them were in Hebrew. It's always delightful to see places with so much character.
During the early British Raj, we didn't really have a 'dairy brand' and people would make butter at home. The British in India wanted some commercially available butter. This led to a Parsi guy nicknamed Polly to create his own brand of butter - Polson Butter. (2/n)
@desishawarmaa
Okay, so it was a snack started by this guy called Amarjit Tibb, who named it after his favourite cricketer, Frank Worrell from the West Indies. And the name just stuck after that :)
Since yesterday, I’ve been thinking about people that I idolise. And I don’t know why, but the people I idolise the most may not necessarily be the most famous or accomplished or badass people in their fields, but always the most wholesome. Humility is so endearing.
Because of climatic differences, the cream obtained from a cow would get spoilt easily in India as compared to Europe, and it would get sour. Because Polson used spoilt sour cream instead of fresh cream, the end product was sour & salty. But hey, it was better than nothing. (3/n)
