We're crowdfunding for the Animator Dormitory!
Help underpaid, Japanese animators live for less than $200 a month (including rent, utilities, and internet).
All donations go directly to the animators!
For a typical TV anime series, an animator makes ¥200 by drawing ONE picture.
If one draws 300 pictures per month, his monthly salary is only: 300 drawings × ¥200 = ¥60,000.
However, drawing 300 sketches is a really challenging task for a new animator.
As a starting point for this project, we are beginning to plan out the development of an original anime studio that will be able to pay animators a fair salary (about two to four times the current industry standards) within the next three years.
In this video, anime producer Toshio Okada speaks about production committees and how they harm the anime creation process.
We've subtitled the video to spread awareness.
Right now, the anime industry is experiencing a labor shortage by mass employee exodus due to low wages. There's not enough people to train new animators, so art quality is declining, and show cancellations are skyrocketing.
We've launched 2018 Animator Dormitory Project!
In 2018, we will be making a 15-second commercial for the short animation we will create by ourselves.
These will be made by a group of people who lived/are currently living in the Animator Dormitory.
Animator Dormitory Project 2019 has just started!
The project provides minimum safety net for underpaid animators, which we support through running a dormitory with a monthly rent of $270 per person.

We are committed to spread info about underpaid animators in Japan.
At this time, we would like to call upon anyone who is willing to volunteer as a translator, voice actor, or video editor to help.

This means if an animator draws 300 frames a month, they only earn 300×1.8 USD = 540 USD per month.
Drawing 300 pages in a month is incredibly tough, particularly for new animators.

The current method of anime production does not pay animators well.
We are working to create a new system of production in which fans can directly support animators!

We’re Animator Supporters, a Japanese non-profit company that’s using the influence of the anime community to raise animators’ low wages.
We aim to provide solutions for animators made by anime fans.
Please consider helping our cause.
This project has two big goals and meanings; one is to create an environment in which start-up animators can focus on their work without desperately trying to make the ends meet by providing them with housing,
We are recruting new members for 【Animator Dormitory/ Anime
Club!】
The Instructors are Japanese animators, however, all of the comments and corrections would be translated, so it is not a problem if you do not understand Japanese.

We wish there was an animators’ union.
Unfortunately, none of the attempts by Japanese animators in the past have past succeeded.
We think there are several reasons for this.
The Japanese anime industry has been producing more anime than ever, with its market size being more than $18.8billion.
However, the environment surrounding animators remains severe -- low salary, long working hours, and illegal contracts.
The New Animator Dorm Project 2024 is live!
Only 4 months left with just 38% of our goal.

Our vision is to create a system so that:
1. The flow of money goes directly from fans to animators
2. Sufficient time and budget are provided for each production
3. Profit made from anime sales is returned to animators

We were able to achieve the targeted funding amount!
From 2019, we will work on a New Anime Making System, which profits will directly return to animators.
We hope you will continue to give us a helping hand!!
Japanese animators may be forced to take their talents elsewhere as Japan’s animation wages fall behind other countries such as China. The anime industry is in dire straights.
