PCI for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, which is not open surgery per se, but a procedure done in a catheterization lab with an awake patient. You can read more at

@Bloodman Wow! I had never heard this story, but here it is (scroll down to the part about Dotter). It seems Dotter not only treated atherosclerosis in humans, but aspergillosis in penguins!

Haha. I thought you were making a play on words, because you're right. It is an international story!! The idea of angioplasty originated with Dotter in Portland, was rejected by the U.S. medical establishment, but traveled to Germany, then to Switzerland, where Gruentzig introduced cardiologists worldwide to the procedure. Knowing that he needed more resources to spread the procedure while still maintaining control of it, Gruentzig moved to Atlanta. So international, for sure.
