there is something incredibly satisfying about reading the first page of a book, and immediately something in your brain sits up and goes 'oh, i'm going to like this' — and then every subsequent page proves you right
publishing execs won't fight for their junior employees because they know there are 100s of eager young grads that can replace them. but it's not the same—you're not just losing fungible manpower but industry knowledge, expertise, and each person's specific editorial vision.

learnt yesterday that there is an indie bookstore in lower manhattan that gives u a jar of pickles in exchange for book donations...now i don't even like pickles but this seems like a great deal
@ZakiyaNJamal
i dont understand why this is so difficult to grasp lol. like teens can and will find a way to read whatever they want (and that includes adult if they dont enjoy ya for some reason). but the bookstore shouldnt be actively sending them in that direction
hiiii i am so excited about this and it's been such a thrill working with
@tessagratton

watching the way this convo swiftly turned towards "practical" issues like pen names and legalities and forms and whatnot has been interesting. when really the problem at the heart of all this is race fakery!!!
of course the conversation would turn to pen names and contracts and “how could someone be duped, I wouldn’t!” Because some yall dont even care about the brownface of it all. how this is just a glimpse into the inherently bigger issues at hand with this
THE RAVEN SCHOLAR is THE book for people who love robin hobb, big epic fantasy stories, and prose that lights up on the page. i devoured this in one sitting, from 12am to 7am—IT IS THAT GOOD 🙂↕️🙂↕️

's SWBTS is the specificity of the diction to reflect mandarin phrases like "rice buckets" (饭桶, a good-for-nothing), "blowing up the cow skin" (吹牛皮, bragging) and "half-empty vinegar bottle" (半瓶醋, an unknowlegable person)!!
too many of you don't have friends who only read self-help/grindset business books...we gotta focus our efforts on getting adults to read FICTION, period, lol.
NEW EPISODE
We used last week's chaos to examine the current information culture in publishing, the relationship between agents and writers they don't represent, and how even well-intentioned folks contribute to a climate of anxiety and gatekeeping

im reading an early copy of exordia by seth dickinson right now and it's taken me right out of my reading slump...being able to dive into a book fully trusting the author to take me somewhere good, and having the author deliver on that promise, is so special 🥹
ok i know there are a couple of kpop books out there now but they are to my knowledge all straight & the romance is b/w an idol & a fan/"normal" person. where is the idol x idol romance. where is the completely unhinged, vicious & depressing book abt how awful it is to be famous
yall i got bodied by this kid at comic con....he was sitting on the floor reading this book, POSITIVELY RAPT. so i go up and ask what's the book and he gives me the most "ew why r u talking to me" HUH? and i had to crawl away in shame. anyway he was reading these violent delights

Congratulations to all! 😍
ended my reading year with wrath goddess sing, which was a truly excellent book and sets the standard for greek myth retellings. the way it engages with its source material is so ballsy, lively, and ultimately very compelling. also, thank god it was horny. not enough books are!

what do i want to get out of reading? im not necessarily interested in seeing my experiences replicated on the page (in either "good" or "bad" ways). like joan said, i like when books are less a mirror & more the surface of a lake that you can dive thru to explore richer depths
I want to write people, first and foremost, and not vehicles of some cause, however noble and well intentioned. I want to write stories for me, not make mirrors for everyone--there I said it
fondly remembering how i got my friend who works at jpmorgan to read this by telling her it was a finance fantasy with lesbians, and then she started texting me about baru's hyperinflation schemes and how she was creating asset-backed securities for prostitutes

before it turns 2024 in new york, here were my favorite books/films/tv of the year. a lot of interesting reading and viewing; i'm excited to dig into older works next year and divest myself from the hype cycle lol
SWBTS was my favorite book of 2021 and dare i say HWDTW is 1) impossibly even better and 2) on track to be my favorite book of 2023.....do yourself a favor and read this series now!!
He Who Drowned the World is out today from
@torbooks
!
Yes, it’s dark. It’s about queer people who’ve been hurt by the world, who learn to hurt in return. But it also has the loveliest moments of human connection I’ve ever written.
I hope it brings you both pain and catharsis 💙
