i fucking dare the metal community to stop focusing on darkness & write some devastatingly heavy downtuned absolutely brutal albums about what brings them joy & inspires them to love & what makes them feel loved. how has heavy music been around this long for this to be that rare.
i swear to god if you are mixing your songs to look a certain way in a spectrum analyzer i am confiscating your DAW & signing you up for little league baseball
creatives: dont let todays walking motivational posters tell you to make something every day. lol. this frantic ass world. 🤦🏻♀️ slow down, take breaks, do nothing, look at a tree for a while. STOP thinking about your art so much. just be. youll make way better shit anyway.
something i miss about early vaporwave is the weirdness. it was generally more, dare i say, avant-grade in the early & mid 2010s. more song titles with non-alphabetic unicode, more abstract & absurdist album art, more awkwardly chopped samples, etc. make vaporwave weird again!
orange is beautiful & neglected. we don't think about it enough. we don't pursue it enough. we need to wear it more, paint it more, look at it more. there are so many shades & types of orange. they don't get enough love. its understudied. ignored. please think more about orange.
i accidentally got too high this morning & have just been in total awe of how good 'carry on wayward son' is. i've been hearing it my entire existence but never really realized how incredible it is. & incredible complex. bohemian rhapsody status
JAZZ FUSION IS NOT VAPORWAVE JAZZ FUSION IS NOT VAPORWAVE JAZZ FUSION IS NOT VAPORWAVE JAZZ FUSION IS NOT VAPORWAVE JAZZ FUSION IS NOT VAPORWAVE JAZZ FUSION IS NOT VAPORWAVE JAZZ FUSION IS NOT VAPORWAVE JAZZ FUSION IS NOT VAPORWAVE JAZZ FUSION IS NOT VAPORWAVE JAZZ FUSION IS NOT
i encourage you to listen to the songs you're working on outside of your DAW for perspective. when you're not staring at all the wave forms & automation points & level meters, everything hits different.
every 60s or 70s rock band that existed up until or past the 90s had an 80s era they are mostly ashamed of. i want to hear all of those albums from all of those bands
there are ppl mad that the USDA is giving free lunches to students for the year because “nothing is free, someone will have to pay for this”
INDIVIDUALISM IS A SCAM
IGNORING THE INTERCONNECTEDNESS & INTERDEPENDENCE OF LIFE ON THIS PLANET IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SINS OF SOCIETY
while y’all are toppling racist statues shouldn’t you also be burning your white supremacist black metal shirts & records? you’re not allowed to tweet Black Lives Matter in a burzum t-shirt ya fuckin goof.
i’ve noticed an increasing number of people who are misinformed about my gender identity. it’s not a huge deal but i want to clear something up. i am non-binary & am not a woman. transfeminine is an accurate descriptor but it’s not a gender identity for me. i have no gender. 🧵:
shaming artists for making their art their career needs to stop. saying that an artist "just cares about money" is misguided. it is a privilege & an honor to have your livelihood dependent on your own art. so stop shaming those who have been able to make that a reality.
pro tip: when a label releases your album on bandcamp you should really really really add a placeholder on your artist bandcamp that links to it. otherwise everyone who comes to your bandcamp looking for your new music will not find it. they may not even know you have any.
just mastered a record by an artist who hacked Half Life & uploaded his own samples into it, then recorded audio of him screwing around in the game. the fidelity is a a bit crunchy & you can't tell whether he's playing the game or playing music. extremely cool.
reign in blood = rainbow blood
into the hellfire = into the rainbow
master of puppets = master of rainbows
the virus of life = the rainbow of life
rust in peace = rainbow of peace
see it's not hard lol
i'm a huge advocate of honesty in music. if someone is feeling tormented & angry & dealing with vengeful feelings & part of their therapy is pouring it into a conceptual metal album, that's fine. but this is the default for metal & i am so done with it.
i am listening to the best "noise music" i have ever heard in my entire life. & it's only a draft of this person's piece. 9 & a half minutes of other-worldly, mind-blowing stuff. never heard anything like it.
feeling sad about how generally dehumanizing ppl are on here. surely the mean heads are the loudest, but my god. it's discouraging. if you don't agree or like someone's take by all means share your views. but the personal attacks & ridicule are just out of this world. 😔
there are many complaints flying about how miserable ppl are on twitter. truly understandable. my advice? make it a better place for yourself by curating your feed, teaching it what you like & don't like, & relentlessly unfollow bad vibes. OR get off the app lol
genre guide to 2020
emo: anything with guitar
vaporwave: anything with synth
jazz: anything with sax
experimental: anything with distorted kick drum
covid 19: anything with animal crossing
since fire-toolz's inception, every so often i jot down in my idea book "make a song that is just harsh noise, blast beats, and relentless screaming for a 2-3 minutes straight, nothing else, no jazz chords, no bullshit." i've never done it. until tonight. 😈
why was using the bathroom such a point of contention for school teachers? “may i use the bathroom?” “no.” like what the fuck? what kind of inhumane shit is that? who the fuck says no u have to hold your piss til u contaminate ur bloodstream because we are reading tom sawyer rn
(1/2) it’s time to debut my favorite photo that lyndon french took of me. this is part of a small series of photos i’ll be using for PR purposes in the music world. you’ll see more of them pop up in the coming months. i could not hold back from posting this one prematurely.
this is gold! best tweet anyone has ever directed toward me.
bro im a DIY musician w/ a day job on a DIY label run by 2 weirdos who listen to noise music. what the hell do you mean wealthy?! i can't even sell 300 LPs. so just what have i been planted into?? looool i can't
@nmeshofficial
there is nothing more annoying than people whining about keeping politics out of X. everything has political implications. literally everything. & half the time it's less about politics & more about ethics & human rights. these ppl don't even know what they're saying.
i swear if one more person asks me what artist i sampled in a MindSpring Memories track, i will tell them the correct answer because i am usually excited to spread the word about those artists
i'm mastering music by an artist who literally talks about how he's making the music IN the music. like his vocal track is him narrating his process. & that's the music. nobody is brave enough to do this but him. we all have a lot to learn.
i know many of you feel like it’s wrong to smile or laugh right now. if you want to effectively change the world, & you’re totally neglecting your own mental health, you are not doing all you can do. meditation/self-soothing/etc are vital parts of being an activist. pls take care
tfw your mom watches a 6 hour doc & finally understands systemic racism. finally. FINALLY. finally. after argument after argument after argument after person trying to explain it to her after person trying to explain it to her after person trying to explain it to her. thanks PBS.
starting an optimistic black metal band. lyrics like "deep in the dark forests of despair, under the cruel moonlight of this hellish life, there is hope if you just eat better, meditate, perhaps join a book club."
it is a common myth that mastering will impede on an artist's creative vision. i often hear "i want to maintain the raw lofi DIY aesthetic so i don't master my music" but, if anything, proper mastering by someone who "gets" your music will do nothing but enhance & preserve that.
i miss the 90s when i used to sit down at the computer, wait for the dial-up to connect, type something into yahoo search, & feel like i had an entire universe of possibilities at my fingertips. now i just grab my phone & tap on the same fucking apps over & over & over. boring.
hi can i help you yea can i have a dozen red roses please oh hi johnny i didn't know it was you here you go that's me how much is it that will be $18 here you go keep the change hi doggy you're my favorite customer thanks a lot bye bye bye
sometimes you wake up in oklahoma & go to the local coffee shop & nate young (wolf eyes, etc.) bumps into you & says “....angel?” & then you sit down & have coffee together with him & his friend, whose name is nathan young. lol
you should master your compilation albums guys. if you don’t you’re just assuming everyone is sending in their track at the same loudness. which they are most definitely not.
i will have zero revision notes after listening to a song in my DAW over & over, but when i export the song & listen to the WAV, i write a novel of notes. the song sounds nothing different. the psychological effect of removing the DAW from the equation is just remarkable
if i get shot or whatever, please master & release all my unreleased music as is. make sure you bounce the latest versions & don’t publish old bounces i’ve since updated. also please make the stems public in case anyone wants to do their own RIP remixes. & don’t read my journal
tired of people telling me that jazz fusion is not medicinal!! i’m NOT some lazy cynical hippie who sits around all day playing video games complaining about the establishment!! jazz fusion is THERAPEUTIC!! it soothes chronic pain & anxiety!! it should be legalized universally!!!
i'm in a slack group with a ton of other professional audio engineers & on our zoom calls we basically spend half the time troubleshooting why our mics aren't working
it's completely acceptable & welcomed to ask for revisions to your mix. but every time you ask for less reverb, i just need you to know, it makes all of the gods of every polytheistic religion cry hysterically
it’s hilarious that some people (very much including myself) have to make huge strides & big efforts to wrap our heads around the idea that the world is overwhelmingly a beautiful place. habitually many of us think it’s just shit. it requires recalibrating. it’s worth it.
if you feel like no one knows about your kick ass new album just remember the most successful marketing out there is filled with lies, exaggeration, & manipulation. (that is supposed to be consolation, not advice)
vaporwave seems to be the only genre where community members are far more excited for vinyl reissues of old tapes & digital releases than they are for artists debuting their new albums on vinyl. meta-nostalgia
you do realize this contagious virus incubates for several wks before symptoms occur? & isolating as much as possible slows the spread to the elderly & vulnerable? there seems to be a *LOT* of ppl who think going out & mingling has zero implications just cuz they feel ok atm. 🤨
i know the world is on fire & for good reason but keep in mind my music & audio/video work is my job, not just a hobby, so if i’m posting things about my shirts or my mastering or whatever else, please don’t secretly hate me. the more i work the more i donate to things!!!!!!!!!!!
good when sloppy:
- powerviolence
- screamo
- thrash
- black metal
- noisy metalcore
- regular twinkly second wave emo
bad when sloppy:
- other metalcore
- fusion
- death metal
- funk
- emo revival/math rock w/ all the guitar tapping
on the fence about hardcore
i feel like when vaporwave started, there was very little interest in jazz. the genre was so much more based in irony, & when i spoke about sampled artists, vaporwave reddit would show little interest. nowadays, all the best vw artists listen to tons of jazz. this is relieving.
