I love that the mangaka works closely with her bestie, who is Deaf/HoH, to capture the nuances of ableist "friends" like this. You can tell this is a lived experience. As someone mildly familiar with SL and learning more, the way he signs even makes me SO uncomfortable.
He just tears her down and makes her feel so small I can’t fathom how people like him think it’s okay to do this

Nope there are different sign languages same as spoken languages :) just like there is overlap between cultures, there are for sign languages as well, but the languages are entirely different. There is ASL, JSL, GSL etc

Sorry! 🙇🏾♀️my wording wasn't the best w/o context. the signs themselves are done well and not like, "baby SL" or anything, it's everything else: his posture, facial expresskon etc. Body language is a major part of SL. The pointedness of the hand movements too, like Yuki mentions.

I think it's important to note that Oushi's SIGNING is well animated but the nuances that make us uncomfy are elsewhere. So bravo to the studio! bc Oushi's interactions with Yuki are supposed to be a bit...off-putting, but not from a TECHNICAL perspective, but a relationship one
