@TheMattBeebe @JohnStreicher1 But that’s not the issue here. The issue is 15% is not enough and especially it is across the board. A more reasonable approach is needed

@TheMattBeebe @JohnStreicher1 Again, by your logic, you should be asking private foundations to pay more. Or ask institutions not to accept private foundation money. Both would be more logical

@TheMattBeebe @JohnStreicher1 By your logic, the U.S. military should have “indirects”/benefits etc just like a private army. Foundations have limited goals and scope. They are not responsible for training or making US best in research. Many of us would be happy to see a thoughtful process instead of this

@TimWannier @florian_krammer @IsbergRalph Biotech co are not universities.Your overhead is low because you don’t have all the missions that univ do. My startups can be super lean because their goal is clear-make a product and money. My academic need to do a lot more-training, explore other possibilities.

@TimWannier @florian_krammer @IsbergRalph Do you run a lab in Boston? If so, please ask your institution to calculate all of your “consumption” including admin support, shipping receiving, electricity, water, building maintainence etc. you will be surprised how much it costs without building new things

@TimWannier @florian_krammer @IsbergRalph But to say I am reducing this cost based on what private foundations do is just not logical

@TimWannier @florian_krammer @IsbergRalph Then who builds buildings? Animal facility fees are in the grants. But who builds them? I am ok with logical discussion on where indirect should be-probably lower than where it is now. But 15% is not it. Read the release-comparing NIH to private foundations… apples and oranges.

@TheMattBeebe @JohnStreicher1 Comparing NIH to private foundations is comparing apples and oranges. You can’t be serious in making them equivalent.

@bratwebb @florian_krammer @HarryDCrane This is a classic case of “I don’t use that much resources for what I do so I will advocate for things even though it hurts others deeply and destroy the system overall”

@TimWannier @florian_krammer @IsbergRalph It doesn’t work that way. Who builds the buildings for labs? Individual labs can’t do that. Who build and manage the animal facilities? We can have a logical discussion on indirect rates but not this… it’s the same as we don’t ask individuals to build roads etc
