@Dorianlynskey
This essay reminds me of someone I knew at university, who couched his reactionary views in deliberately florid and obscurant prose which he hoped would add a veneer of "cleverness" and make it almost impossible to spot just how much of a bigot he was.
As a former postman, just a thought. If you’re expecting a delivery today, please offer the courier a cold drink or let them top up their water bottle. The person bringing you your stuff will really appreciate it. Thanks.
I’m glad I’m not in the Weller band any more, because I can say what I like without dragging my boss into it. What I’m saying now is “BALLS TO “TQ. GOD SAVE OUR QUEEN”” and any other vile racist who may have heard the odd Weller song, but never actually *listened*
David Frost reckoning that the Northern Soul Prom wasn’t “serious music” epitomises a “joyless fucker” tendency typical of most obsessive culture war enthusiasts. I doubt he was there. I doubt he even watched it on the iPlayer.
He joined the Paul Weller band onstage at a gig in Belfast to play From The Floorboards Up. “Do you know it?” asked Paul backstage. “Yeah, it’s one of mine!” grinned Wilko in reply. He played it brilliantly, in every sense of the phrase.
This is the announcement we never wanted to make, & we do so with a very heavy heart: Wilko Johnson has died. He passed away at home on Monday 21st November. Thank you for respecting the family's privacy at this very sad time. RIP Wilko Johnson.

I met Andy M when I was part of the musical turn on a chat show. He was lovely, modest, un-showy young man, focussed not on stardom but on being the best in his field. People forget that celebrity used to be a by-product of achievement and not an end in itself. Andy M hasn’t.
Whatever one thinks about the gentrification of popular culture-today it’s Northern Soul in the spotlight-I’m absolutely delighted that some of the music I love that I was told was “too obscure”, “old” or “not suitable” for DJing with 30 years ago is now more popular than ever.
Imagine. Seeing the MC5. In a pub. In Croydon. THIS is Yesterday’s Britain, a better Britain. Not the old cars, village greens and racism of *that* account but loud political rock in quirky, grimy venues.
1972, Croydon. MC5 chill out before playing The Greyhound. My late friend Stuart Cruickshank was there & said it was one of the greatest gigs he ever saw, albeit he was deaf for a fortnight after it
On this very day in 2012 I was playing at The Roundhouse with Paul Weller celebrating the release of Sonik Kicks. I’m not saying it was stressful learning the set but you can clearly see the toll it took on my Barnet. The luminance is all over my chrominance. Bloody good fun tho.
I was once on Jools Holland’s Hootenanny playing bass with Paul Weller and Tom Jones. Whatever point you’re trying to make regarding past glories, I’m still firmly in the lead.
All these Tommeh flag-shaggers who think they’re Weller fans. Their favourite songs are always “‘Angin On The Wire”, or “Pebbles On A Beach” or the Billy Elliott one.
This appearance cast a long shadow. It was the festival gig that all others were being judged by 14 years later. An unrepeatable coming together of circumstances, and a lineup of brilliant musicians.
But you have never been on Jools Holland’s Hootenanny, pissed on BBC Champagne, dancing between two Victorian policemen on stilts having just performed with Paul Weller AND Tom Jones. Which if life is a competition* puts me firmly ahead
*it really isn’t
I also got to play bass on a song I’ve always wanted to play bass on since it was number one the year I got my first bass guitar... but never mind all those years in the Weller band, THIS is a career highlight for me
Welcome to the Reform UK Battle Bus - Temple Run edition.
We are being garrotted by trees, I’ve got twigs in my hair and there are pensioners on the floor.
And as I was standing by the edge I could see the faces of those who led pissing themselves laughing. Their mad eyes bulged, their flushed faces said “The weak get crushed as the strong grow stronger”
Happy birthday to
@EdwynCollins
! Not only a brilliant singer/songwriter, but an inspirational producer too. His work on Vic Godard's amazing 1993 album "The End Of The Surrey People" shows what can be done with cheap kit, passion and a bloody good song
On my way to
@sohoradio
for my usual Saturday fun,and I’ve just been called a “poof” by a random male someone for the first time in over 25 years,presumably because I’m wearing a mustard coloured sweater, a patterned scarf and suede shoes. Badge of honour, mate.
Walloping this old thing for the first time in ages. I was tempted to flog it a while ago, but knew I’d regret it the moment I did. Some things become more than just things. They become part of your personal history.
John Lennon was born today. He was murdered by a wanker with a gun. Wankers with guns think they rule the world,but they don’t. I can’t even remember the name of the wanker that shot him,but as long as human beings sing, dance & make music, John Lennon will never be forgotten
It was an unbelievable honour and a pleasure to work with Judy Dyble on Summer Dancing. We sometimes talked about making more music together, and I’m heartbroken that we now never will. An amazing woman who enriched the lives of everyone who met her, or heard her sing.
RIP Kenny Lynch. Yes, the Small Faces hits he wrote. Yes, his brilliant series of HMV 45s discovered by the Northern Soul scene. Yes, “Dr Terror’s House Of Horror” & “The Plank”. But there’s also this which is, I think, Incredible.
Steve Pilgrim is a better singer, guitarist and songwriter than he is a drummer-and he’s a formidable drummer as you all know. Do yourself a big favour and go along to one of his shows if you can.
For me, it’s this I have to thank Terry Hall for more than anything as anyone who ever danced to it at Blow Up, jumped around to it waiting for Blur to go on or formed a band so they could cover it will testify
Happy 44th Birthday to Start! by The Jam.
As an aside, it's also 88 years since George Formby got a silver disc for When I'm Cleaning Windows.
As another aside, I bet there'll be people listening to, and digging, both those songs in 2068.
@petepaphides
It's almost certainly not their fault that they've become a by-word for "music for people who don't like music". They do what they do exceedingly well- it's not easy to compose music that can capture a big audience. But popularity breeds contempt, I guess.
30 years ago this evening I wore this for the first time as I set the decks up at Nottingham's Rock City to begin my stint as tour DJ for this lot. Band and crew were brilliant to be with and made me & co-DJ Paul Tunkin very welcome. Even more welcoming were the audience.
@Bren4Bassetlaw
I don’t wish poverty on anyone, but you could do with a spell of it, now, in your constituency, with the current cost of living, and see how you get on. You might develop a bit more empathy.
Factory Lock No 3 on the New Main Line Canal in

is closed as a car is in the lock. We're working on a plan to get this removed as quickly as possible. There are no signs of pollution yet but we will continue to monitor.
@ExpressandStar
Over on Facebook, there are still far too many people defending racists. Including, amazingly, someone who runs a shop selling clothes influenced by the mod, soul and skinhead scenes. Who’s gonna tell him?
@WhenIsBirths
I’ve met some truly wonderful people through my love of Weller in all his various incarnations. I’ve also met some raging arseholes who haven’t got past the tribalism of their late teens. It’s the latter who also turn out to be the most dedicated swallowers of fascism*
And on this day in 1981, Ghost Town by The Specials got to number one. The year between is probably the zenith of British pop music as a cultural force.
You know who else can join the ever growing list of people who can fuck off? People who move in to brand new flats next to long-established and internationally famous music venues who then complain about the noise and try and get the venues closed down.
I played a tiny part in the gestation of the

album that's currently the subject of a

Twitter Listening Party. It was an honour and privilege to hear those songs take shape, and the finished album is a brilliant piece of work

Get well soon! Here’s a nice old timer tabby i met on an afternoon stroll. Allowed me quite close but wasn’t keen on strokes and went back to sleep. 8 out of 10.
Seeing the Blur thing at Coachella reminds me of when I played there with my old job. Nobody really knew, or cared, who we were. The crowd were just having a great time, and making sure they were seen to be having a great time. I got the impression it's not a music festival- 1/2
During the 80s, London was full of veterans of the Punk Wars. This man lost a leg at the Battle Of The Hope And Anchor but ended up on the streets, a forgotten victim of terrible times.
Stop everything. This has been brought to my attention and now I’m bringing it to yours. Worth a look at the whole thing but you’ll probably want to skip to around 11 mins in…
@thecatreviewer
Rimshot Studios have two cats. This is the less shy of the two. 10/10 for scampering. -2 for knocking into expensive vintage recording equipment.
Vote for this guy. Not only is his party the best choice for the nation, he’s the best looking and most “mod” mp in ages. Look at him, channeling Henry Thomas in the Paul Weller Movement.
Potholes need filling.
Our NHS needs saving.
Environmental standards need raising.
So we just…keep on moving.
