The overturning of Roe v. Wade has unleashed immense harm and suffering across the nation. Here is my attempt, albeit incomplete by nature, to tell the story of our first year without Roe.
“I was made to feel less than human. Texas law caused me to be detained against my will for five days and treated like a criminal during the most traumatic and heartbreaking experience I’ve had in my life to date.”
It's embarrassing to uncritically publish this glowing gentrification ad. The first critical quote from a Puerto Rican appears on the 33rd paragraph, there's no context whatsoever about research showing how these tax incentives do NOT benefit the island.
"As Black adoptees, we don’t get that benefit of the doubt."
I spoke with
@theadoptedlife
about Michael Oher's claims, The Blind Side's cultural impact, and how hard it has been to hear people suggest Oher should be grateful for the Tuohys’ support.
“The abortion rights and health movement has been in a death spiral of compromise for about 30 years. We have an opportunity here to build something better, and we’re not even talking about it.”
This is one of the most personal things I've ever written. On motherhood, reporting on Dobbs, and living in a state where an abortion ban just went into effect:
As a journalist, does this not seem extremely fucked up to you? Where are your follow-up questions about what sort of impact this has for the average Puerto Rican and their communities?
Very grateful I spoke with Isabel Allende about writing as a craft, finding inspiration, and whether she’ll ever retire.
She says: “Writers write until they can’t write anymore. Painters paint until they fall apart. Who retires from art?”
This summer, Camille Napoleon made an extraordinary decision: She would foster asylum seekers at her apartment. “You’re not living if you’re not aiding others,” she remembers her father saying.
My profile for this year's Reasons to Love New York:
BREAKING: A Texas judge just granted a TRO on Kate Cox's case, allowing her to obtain the emergency abortion she needs. She said that not granting her relief would be a "genuine miscarriage of justice."
Update coming soon.
"Living in an archipelago plagued by colonial policies, a decades-long economic crisis, and alarming rates of violence against women has pushed this generation back to reggaetón’s radical political roots."

Puerto Rico doesn’t have any of the abortion restrictions that proliferated in the South and Midwest even before Roe v. Wade was overturned. Why is it so hard for patients to access care, then?
I spent time at home trying to figure it out:
Just days ago Republicans filed a bill banning abortions at any stage, except when the life of the pregnant person is in danger. Being able to override Cooper's veto would be devastating not only for North Carolinians, but patients from all over the South.
Breaking: NC Democratic lawmaker Rep. Tricia Cotham is expected to switch her party affiliation to Republican, handing NC Republicans a legislative supermajority and the votes to override D Gov. Roy Cooper mid-legislative session.

I'm begging my colleagues to do better. This story is completely irresponsible—down to the fact that this crisis pregnancy center being "proudly anti-abortion" is not mentioned until the literal end of the piece.
After becoming unexpectedly pregnant, Lationna wanted an abortion. But Mississippi bans them and she could't afford to travel. Now she has a baby she loves, but wasn't ready for, in a state where there's virtually no support for poor parents like her:
New

report found that nearly 1,400 pregnant people were criminalized in the 16-year period leading to Roe being overturned. "It’s really a fight for bodily autonomy," Lourdes Rivera, the organization's president, told me. Our interview:
Rachel Sweet managed the campaign that brought home Kansas' abortion rights victory on Aug. 2. Days later, she moved to Kentucky to defeat a similar ballot measure in the midterms. There, she did it again.
Our conversation for

"People...had this idea that there were a certain kind of women who had abortions and killed their babies, and a different kind of women who got pregnant and went to term. Except they’re all the same women, just at different moments of their lives."
In June, the

rushed to fund as many people as possible before North Carolina’s new abortion ban kicked in. “People calling would say, ‘I have to get this money because if I don’t, I’m not gonna meet the new restriction,’” a staffer said.
As a step that signals the culmination of medical school, matching is often a joyful, but stressful, moment for students. Abortion bans have made

much more complicated.
My latest:
The predominant narratives around adoption in the U.S. exclude birth mothers' experiences by design. Gretchen Sisson's new book RELINQUISHED, out today, is a powerful attempt at correcting this disparity.

BREAKING: North Carolina Republicans are introducing a measure to ban abortions at 12 weeks, with exceptions for rape, incest, fatal fetal abnormalities, and danger to the woman's life. The bill is becoming available later tonight and will be fast-tracked.
So excited our bargaining committee is back at the table fighting for us. Adweek recently called New York Magazine the "hottest magazine of the year" so I think we deserve the hottest contract in the industry!!!
#NewContractNewYork
A strong contract is highbrow brilliant. The New York Magazine Union is back at the bargaining table today to renegotiate our contract. Please share your support as we work to make sure our members get a fair deal.

The ban will likely pass and the GOP has a veto-proof majority thanks to Rep. Tricia Cotham, who switched parties last month. It'll be absolutely devastating for the entire South.
CPCs are not healthcare providers. They do not offer "maternal care," despite their attempt at rebranding as "pregnancy resource centers." They are deeply unregulated and also allowing stuff like this to happen:
ICYMI: Last fall, conservative media ran with a story about how Tamara Kay offered to get abortion pills for Notre Dame students. She says it unleashed horrific threats against her, which the school did little to curb. And the story? Well, it wasn't true.
"The survival of clinics like the West Alabama Women’s Center, she continued, could mean 'the difference between being able to get compassionate care through that experience versus being thrown in jail.'"
🚨The application for the Ida B. Wells Fellowship program is now open! 🚨
The year-long fellowship helps journalists complete their first major investigation and comes with a $25k stipend plus editorial and research support. Apply now:
SB20 will decimate abortion access for North Carolina and the entire South. No matter what Republicans say, there's nothing "pro-woman" about this measure.
“That law forced me to carry a baby for months that was never going to live and easily could have killed me. I should have been able to get an abortion in Tennessee and protect my own health.”
Gabriella Gonzalez, a 26-year-old mother of three, was fatally shot his ex-partner shortly after she returned from getting an abortion in Colorado. She had reported him to the police in March after he allegedly strangled her.
Even if the FDA's approval of mifepristone is ultimately suspended, medication abortion will remain a safe and effective option for patients thanks to the second drug in the regimen: misoprostol.
Here is how misoprostol-only abortions work:
My dispatch from the North Carolina General Assembly, where lawmakers overrode Gov. Cooper's veto on an abortion ban that will decimate access for the South. It's devastating to know this state is my home and my body is now on the line.
Frozen embryos are children under Alabama law, the state’s Supreme Court ruled Friday. What does that mean for IVF patients? I spoke with Susan Crockin, who specializes in assisted-reproductive-technology law, to find out.
Read more:
Two federal judges issued competing rulings around the FDA’s regulation of mifepristone tonight, but the status quo has not changed.
That means you can still obtain a medication abortion.
Votes on the bill set for Thursday -- no public hearings or committee meetings on it. Sponsors say they fully vetted it in private GOP working group meetings. And they say all Republican caucus members have committed to voting yes

And here’s a breakout story from this feature:
This spring, Melissa learned that her child had a rare and fatal genetic disorder. She self-managed her abortion at 14 weeks, and the experience has profoundly changed her views on abortion.
"The combined annual budgets of Planned Parenthood...which is $1.7 billion. The Abortion Care Network has launched a fund-raising drive to support independent providers: it has raised just $5 million dollars in the past year."
?
2015: NC state Rep. Tricia Cotham opposes a 72-hour waiting period, gives speech about her abortion.
2022: Runs on codifying Roe.
2023: Switches party affiliation, giving the GOP a vetoproof supermajority, and with it, the power to end legal abortion.
“We had to make a medical decision, even though all of the political machinations are happening in the background with the Legislature, impeachment, and all of those things. The people of Wisconsin couldn’t wait any longer.”
"'They forced me, basically, to have a child,' she said of the state after the abortion ban. But then, 'they didn’t help me take care of that child.'
At the time of publication, the family was still struggling."
Last fall, conservative media said Dr. Tamara Kay put up a poster offering to procure abortion pills for Notre Dame students. The story was not true, and Kay says the school has not protected her from the harassment she's experienced as a result.
Abortion pills are a powerful tool in post-Roe America, but their future hangs in the balance. A lawsuit in TX could ban medication abortion nationwide as soon as Feb. 10, while two other suits could expand access even in states with bans.
My latest:
“I am a typical person seeking abortion care. There’s nothing extraordinary about my situation.”
My conversation with Sen.
@EvaBurchAZ
, who announced on the Arizona Senate floor that she’ll have an abortion this week for her nonviable pregnancy.
A woman in Greenville, South Carolina, was arrested and charged this week on suspicion of taking abortion pills to terminate a pregnancy in October 2021.
Read also ProPublica on a call between anti-abortion lobbyists & TN lawmakers. "Maybe your caucus gets to a point next year...where you do want to talk about IVF and how to regulate it in a more ethical way or deal with some of those contraceptive issues."
National Review author and anti-abortion activist comes out swinging against the birth control pill, decrying it as "actively harmful." Post-Roe, the next battle in the war for reproductive rights is emerging very quickly.
"These findings suggest that many pregnant people in Texas were unable to overcome barriers to access abortion services and instead were forced to continue an unwanted or unsafe pregnancy to term," Suzanne Bell, one of the study’s authors, told me.
Florida's 15-week abortion ban has already created "devastating, harrowing, horrific" consequences for patients, says
@LeaderBookFL
. But in a few months, Gov. DeSantis' new 6-week ban could go into effect.
"It’s only going to get worse," she says.
A Texas man has sued three women, whom he accuses of murder, for allegedly helping his ex-wife terminate a pregnancy with abortion pills. The lawsuit comes about a month after their divorce finalized.
As I wrote last month: Residents tend to put down roots where they train. Fewer residents = fewer doctors in states that are already experiencing a physician shortage, healthcare deserts, high maternal mortality rates, etc.
During oral arguments today, the Florida Supreme Court seemed open to upholding the state’s 15-week abortion ban. Doing so would pave the way for a separate six-week ban to take effect and devastate abortion access for the entire Southeast.
I spoke with more than 20 abortion rights advocates and experts about what they expect to see in 2023. Everyone agreed the dust has far from settled after Dobbs, with things likely to get much worse before they get better.
Read more:
"If someone’s water breaks prior to 22 weeks, you end the pregnancy. So I wasn’t doing all that I could have done to protect [her]. Thankfully, she didn’t get sick and she didn’t bleed to death. But why do I have to wait for [that] to take care of people?"
"Originalist ideology glorifies an era of blatant oppression along racial, gender, and class lines, transforming that era’s lowest shortcomings into our highest standards."
"
One final crazy thought: Maybe instead of this we should stand up for women who hold considerably less power and strive to create truly equitable and just workplaces. But what would I know—I'm not a female founder!
Today’s Supreme Court election in Wisconsin will determine whether the lawsuit against the state’s 1849 abortion ban is heard by a conservative or liberal majority. The latter could overturn the ban and decide that abortion is constitutionally protected.
The 6-week ban makes an exception for rape and incest cases, but requires people to show evidence of the crime in order to meet it. Book, a survivor of sexual assault, says the requirement "borderlines on cruel and unusual punishment."
I would have more sympathy if many of these (often white) women showed one modicum of accountability instead of deluding themselves into think that "sexism 💔" was the reason for their ouster instead of idk, their own shitty and racist behavior? Own up to it and learn!
LaDonna told me that, following the two attacks, investing in repairs and security upgrades for the new clinic will cost upwards of $1 million.
A GoFundMe to help rebuild the new location has raised a little over $20K out of its $500K goal.
"Kacsmaryk seemed open to the argument that mifepristone had not been properly vetted — claims the Food and Drug Administration and leading health organizations strongly contest."
But the workers whose lives were disrupted — by these founders' failed leadership, including exploitative work conditions and racial salary disparities and laying workers off during maternity leave, etc. — didn't have the same opportunities and likely never will.
The Supreme Court is currently hearing oral arguments in United States v. Rahimi, a case that could dramatically expand gun rights and have deadly consequences for victims of domestic violence.
"States that have enacted abortion bans saw a 10.5 percent drop in applicants for obstetrics and gynecology residencies in 2023 from the previous year, according to new data from the Association of American Medical Colleges."
Celeste Burgess, the Nebraska teen who faced criminal charges in connection with self-managing her abortion last year, has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and two years’ probation.
Bethany Werth's eyelashes are paying for college. This summer, the 19-year-old made about $26K from creating beauty content on TikTok. The money will allow her to pay for most of her tuition this year, no student loans required.
Read our conversation:
Also these takes make it seem as if these women are being exiled forever and their lives are being ruined, when they go and open a fancy store that gets tons of publicity or become the CEO of a pageant or launch their own VC firm or whatever cushy job awaited them anyway.
Indiana’s impending abortion ban will likely close down Clinic for Women, which LaDonna Prince has run for decades. Now she's starting over in Danville, Illinois — where her new facility has already been attacked twice.
My latest:
A new report estimates there were 26,000 more self-managed abortions in the first six months after Dobbs, helping make up for the loss of clinician-provided care.
