My first story for @AFARmedia magazine! In our mostly digital world, it's nice to see my byline in print for a change. But here's the online version:

Iāve always wanted to work on something at Nat Geo w/Robert Macfarlane. We never landed on anything in the end but he was always very gracious and Iām still fangirling. Especially in light of this latest book
Helloāthis is the cover of my new book, Is A River Alive?, which is published next May. Itās taken me 3 1/2 years to write this book. Iāve poured all I have into it. My notebooks were always thirsty; I filled over 20 of them while on fieldwork. Itās become the most political, personal & (possibly) poetic book Iāve written. If youāre a reviewer/editor/other whoād like an ARC/proof, please let me know in a reply/message & Iāll try to get one sent to you in the next few weeks. The original artwork for the cover is a vast, sinuous linocut by the legendary @StanleyDonwood of Radiohead et al, whoās now jacketed most of my books. I love working with Stanley & his punk-pop-pastoral genius. Ā Stan & I are both admirers of Fiskās Mississippi meander-maps. To us, meanders are vivid expressions of a riverās wilful, cursive, animate presence in the land: an alive, enlivening forceāa silver god. Developing the design with @RichardBravery, we studied Fiskās maps & @geo_coeās radiant LiDAR images of meanders, which also emblazon the bookās endpapers. Ā Stanley conjured this glowing, interlaced image: at once river, vein, artery, smoke & guts. All of themābecause rivers run through us as surely as they run through places. Ā The rivers who flow through this bookās pages are my co-authors. I wrote & thought it with them; I acknowledge that collaboration throughout. Around the world, rivers are dying. This is a failure of imagination as well of organisation. Is A River Alive? seeks to imagine riversā& life itselfāotherwise. To see what follows if we take seriously the idea that a river is alive. Doing so can help us revive riversā& rivers revive us. I travelled with some of the most extraordinary people Iāve ever known, inc. @Giulifungi, @Yuvan_aves & Rita Mestokosho. As for what happened to me ten days down the last, biggest river I followed; well, I think I will always be coming to terms with it. Ā The book is out 1 May in UK with @HamishH1931 & 20 May in US/Canada from @wwnorton & @PenguinRandomCA. It can be pre-ordered via the Linktree in my bio. As any writer will tell you, pre-orders make a huge difference to a bookās life. Oh ā and many thanks to many people here for all the encouragement along the way. Rob

Indie bookshops are my weakness. Four Seasons Books in #Shepherdstown, WV, is my idea of heaven and runs some 13 book clubs in person.

Hereās a rental car travel tip if youāre arriving at @flyLAXairport . 1/2 The bigger name agencies like @Avis @Hertz have shuttles that pick up at airport. Others like @AceRentalCars rely on Metro Connector shuttles to bring u to offsite depot.

It's time for the annual Explorer's Festival here at @natgeo--which means spotting in the halls Bob Ballard (Titanic!), new Emmy winner Bertie Gregory, and all the enthusiastic young scientists, conservationists, researchers doing amazing work supported by Nat Geo. šš¤©š

Everyone I know who goes to #Laos raves about it: the food, the culture, the temple complex that rivals Angkor Wat...
