Bismillah
I am excited to announce my forthcoming book, The African Gaze: Photography, Cinema and Power published by Thames & Hudson (
@thamesandhudson
), is now available for pre-order.
Black trauma and death are consumed, commodified, branded, hastagged and made public spectacle. The revolution may not be televised but the suffering always is.
Everyone who’s seen CITY OF GOD should watch the documentary CITY OF GOD — 10 YEARS LATER (on Netflix) to get a sense life for these actors post starring in a high-grossing film
Ghana, Ethiopia, Senegal, Haiti, everywhere there is oppression against Black people should be of concern. Solidarity is solidarity. Pan-Africanism is Pan-Africanism. This picking and choosing is not it.
This meme is making several points at once. As I’ve said before, Black ppl can also be complicit in upholding colonial + neocolonial aesthetics/positioning by deploying the same tactics yt ppl have been using in photography for centuries.
See: African people as props/backdrop 🙄

On what’s going in Senegal (originally shared on my Instagram)

It's hard to synthesize the cause and effect that led to the unrest Senegal has been embroiled in over the last few days. [1/8]
The term “African aesthetic” needs to be done away with. Every time you say this, you reinforce the falsity that Africa is a monolith. I would like to think that by now [*checks notes*] we know it is not.
Anyone afraid to speak up against crimes against humanity for fear of losing opportunities/money is deeply disconnected from God and/or their spirituality. Your blessings do not come from man. Man is just the vehicle. What is for you will never miss you. Be principled + steadfast
Rest In Peace to a great djeli who came from a long line of great djelis, a master kora player, a virtuoso, Toumani Diabate. Truly a great loss. In speaking about himself and those who carry the tradition of the kora, he once said…
Today, the Senegalese people are mobilizing for:
- The the respect of the electoral calendar
- The release of political prisoners & those imprisoned for their opinions
- Justice for people killed during the various protests
- Respect for fundamental freedoms

The syllabus for my course Third Cinema & The Counter Narratives™ is now available for viewing + download. I timed this release with the start of the fall semester :). Link to access it:
Self-discipline really is a form of self love. When you block the noise and do what needs to be done (at a healthy pace, punctuated by rest), you affirm to yourself you are worthy of attaining what you want.
The limits of cruelty and inhumanity don’t seem to exist. We’re living in deeply devastating and heartbreaking times. All the intellectualizing, theorizing, radical hope in the world cannot change how profoundly sad I am
In the 1970s, Thomas Sankara was in a band called Tout-à-Coup Jazz. He was on guitar, while his friend, and later betrayer, Blaise Compaoré was on vocals.
Photo of Sankara playing his electric guitar by Patrick Aventurier, 17 November 1986.
Once again, Senegalese people at home & abroad are saying
#FreeSenegal
. The President has thrown the nation into another crisis by canceling the national elections scheduled for February 25th and AGAIN enacting repressive measures. The cycle continues and people are tired 🇸🇳
Shame on everyone who participated in the the meme-ification of Breonna Taylor and the use of her name for branding/marketing. How do these acts contribute to any form of justice, respect and dignity for a slained Black woman?
This tweet is misdirected considering the French government banned this protest. A Black woman organized it + sustained this movement in the name of her late brother killed by police. African + Maghrebi are the force behind the movement and they are very much bout it.
“1. Whatever the work is, do it well—not for the boss but for yourself.
2. You make the job; it doesn’t make you.
3. Your real life is with us, your family.
4. You are not the work you do; you are the person you are.”
—Toni Morrison, The Work You Do, The Person You Are
This year has been marked by death, heartbreak + trauma. I really don’t know how much more grief, anger + sadness I can take. I still want to remain soft + keep my heart open. I want to keep believing in possibilities. I don’t want this world, this life, to take that away from me
I’m not a perfect Muslim, but I’m a better Muslim than 5 years ago, 3 years ago, 1 year ago. The relationship I have with Allah swt and the one I have with myself are so much stronger, and inshAllah both relationships will deepen in time.
Today I had the honor of delivering and presenting The African Gaze to the great, beloved James Barnor. During our afternoon together, I read to him his section of the book, and he said: “Keep this in your heart and mind: you have captured me perfectly.”
There is so much to unpack with regard to what is happening across Africa right now. My mind is connecting all the dots, but it is a dizzying + infuriating process. It is taking me a while to properly synthesize + articulate. All of what is happening has a lineage/genealogy.
Happy 84th Birthday to the great Souleymane Cissé, a pillar of African cinema, a dedicated, principled filmmaker. It is an honor to know him and call him tonton. May Allah continue to bless him + grant him continued good health. Ameen 🤲🏿🌹
Took these photos in 2018♥️
Juneteenth is rooted in a Black American (Texan) historical specificity, but please watch this. 💔🥀 Speaks to the broader conversations around modern-day enslavement.
The woman + the work.
Bigging myself up today. I built this *myself* w/ divine guidance from Allah swt. I’m still building. It’s a blessing to carve out my own lane + run it at my own pace. I see some try to erase me/my work out, but it’s ok. More coming through the pipeline xx
Listen, people clown Tubi but there are gems on there. You just need to look. Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Abderrahmane Sissako, Julie Dash… Plenty of great films + documentaries. For free.

On Fanon’s birthday, I am thinking of the cyclical, ongoing conversations about “decolonizing the institution.” As long as a course, exhibition, etc is within the confines of an institution, the work of “Decolonization” is stunted and cannot fully actualize.
“For most African countries the colonial system was replaced by the neocolonialist political system as represented by bourgeois capitalists (of Western inspiration), feudalists, or bureaucrats. The African people continue to suffer from the same evils.”
— Ousmane Sembène
Of course IG saw it first. Walking into September and the Fall 2020 semester ready + prepped. 🤙🏿 Photo by Sandra Semburg for REFINE (the dress I am wearing) 🤎
All the influencers + brands based in Europe, where was your outrage for Adama Traoré AND COUNTLESS OTHERS BEFORE + AFTER? Where were you and when BLACK MIGRANTS WERE DYING AT SEA + TORTURED IN LIBYA? Now you want post “Black Lives Matter.”
The fight in NYC is alive and intergenerational. Today the community prayed for + honored those we’ve lost, and denounced Macky Sall, the corruption, neocolonialism + human rights violations.

Today marks the anniversary of the death of Senegalese revolutionary Omar Blondin Diop (18 September 1946-11 May 1973), whose death is largely believed to have been a political assassination. May his spirit live on. 🕊🌹✊🏿
Never in a million years did I think I would have the chance to present my book in person to a few of Africa’s greatest living image-makers. I was able to meet and give an advanced copy of The African Gaze to Cameroonian film pioneer, Mr. Dikongué-Pipa. 🖤🙏🏿
Thomas Sankara, who was assassinated on this day October 15 1987, expressed his solidarity with Palestinians during his speech at the UN General Assembly, 1984.
“... I make no secret of my opinion that at the present time the barbarism of Western Europe has reached an incredibly high level, being only surpassed - far surpassed, it is true - by the barbarism of the United States.”
—Aimé Césaire, Discourse on Colonialism
Eid Mubarak beautiful Ummah ✨ May Allah swt accept our efforts and may we remain on the Right Path. 🤲🏿

Though English is the official language, Jamaican Patois, a rich English-based creole with African, Spanish and Taíno indigenous linguistic influences, is the common language spoken. (cont’d)
Finally a page turned in Senegal. May President-elect Diomaye do right by his country + honor his mandate. The people deserve to live a quality, dignified life. The youth deserve to inherit the best. Senegal deserves the best. 🇸🇳🤲🏿
