Well, this was a dream come true. I saw the incomparable
@jonimitchell
last night. An indescribably beautiful testament to resilience, friendship, creativity and love. I am forever in Joni’s debt and I know many others are too. My review here:
What is “Bob Dylan Core”?
The hot new TikTok trend of wearing a thin jacket on a cold day is introducing a new audience to the songwriter’s work.
More:
To me one of the brilliant things about Robbie Robertson was that he was the absolute king of playing lead guitar in a way that just sounded like an integral *part* of the song, not “here’s a raging guitar solo everyone stand back.” He weaved in between it all seamlessly.
I just turned on CNN and the Trump rally is playing Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” and I just want to say that Tom would be PISSED if he knew about that.
every single bob dylan lyric from roughly 1963 to 1975 is lodged in the frontal cortex of my brain but if you introduce yourself to me with your name i WILL ask for it again 5 minutes later
Recently had to tell my dad that it’s actually Eric Clapton playing the solo in “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” not George Harrison and his reaction was not unlike when a kid learns the tooth fairy isn’t real. Slightly disbelieving and sad.
Okay, who’s someone you don’t automatically think of as a “guitarist” but doesn’t get enough credit for their guitar playing? I’ll go first: Bob Weir. Plays the strangest rhythmic lines you’ve ever heard, it’s like half jazz, half bluegrass, all woven into one groovy thing.
this photo never fails to crack me up. his outfit, the totally nondescript setting that looks like a post office or something, the woman creeping up behind him. the mise en scene in this is just perfect.
last night I went to a concert that started at 7:45 pm and was over by 9. I was back home by 9:30. absolutely wonderful experience, no notes, more bands should do that.
I think the best thing about jimmy buffett was his “I don’t care that I only had one hit song, I’m just gonna live life & have fun w/ the fan base that I do have” mentality is the best thing ever. More artists should be like that. You don’t need 100 hits, you need exactly 1.
Happy 15th anniversary to that time Bob Dylan got apprehended by the New Jersey police for being “suspicious.” In Jersey anything’s legal as long as you don’t get…..caught.
I did the impossible. I selected the “best” song from every
@bobdylan
album. There are hits, deep cuts, everything in between. Did my damndest to pick what I felt was the strongest song of each LP. Happy 81st, Bob, we are lucky to have you among us.
Fact: The best rock bands have dedicated keyboard players: Doors, Petty & the Heartbreakers, E Street Band, Fleetwood Mac, the Band, Spiders From Mars, I could keep going. More keys, please.
Bob Dylan proved it was possible to outrun your roots and land in a place worlds away from where you started. The American dream. But today I got to see his childhood bedroom, quite literally where it all began. ❤️
whoever just STOLE my package containing my archival joni mitchell box set within 15 minutes of it arriving…..you have made a deep and permanent enemy in me today. hope you enjoy ‘mingus’
I have always been thankful to live at the same time as Bob Dylan. I am also thankful there are many here among us who feel the same. Visited the new
@bobdylancenter
this week and wrote some words about it for
@UltClassicRock
:
obviously the first thing I did this morning was track down this audio. shout out to the guy at the beginning of this clip who squeals “oh my GOD.” we are all him.
Here’s my Robbie Robertson story:
When I studied abroad in the UK, I met a fellow exchange student who was from Toronto. We had dinner one night and she said “oh my boyfriend’s aunt is dating this famous Canadian musician, maybe you know of him?”
It was Robbie Robertson.
Oh, how there is nothing quite Bob Dylan at the Beacon. He is of this city like the subway steam and it is so good to welcome him home. An absolute pleasure to review Dylan’s return to New York last night. Here is to the multitudes we all contain.
Today is the 25th anniversary of what I consider a petty underrated gem of the
@DavidBowieReal
catalog, ‘Earthling.’ Many thanks to
@reevesgabrels
for speaking with me and shedding some light on it!

Fun fact I learned while working for Ken Burns lol: the Beatles were actually supposed to meet Sonny Liston, who refused to meet with “those pansies” and so they met with Muhammad Ali instead.
I’m a gigantic fan of ‘Nebraska’ but every once in a while I consider the idea that the Band’s version of this song might be better than the original. Those harmonies, the changes in the phrasing, great stuff.
david lee roth once said that music critics like elvis costello because music critics LOOK like elvis costello. here to confirm that as fact. going to my third EC show in less than a month tonight. i’m not angry.
In honor of Lou Reed’s birthday, Keith has recorded a cover of “I'm Waiting for the Man.” The digital single & music video are out now and featured on the upcoming album ‘The Power of the Heart: A Tribute to Lou Reed’. Vinyl & CD available at fine independent record shops
There’s a lot of historic rock n roll moments I would have loved to have been present at but tbh this one still takes the cake. Almost nothing about this photo makes sense, right down to Dylan’s dangling earring. The Last Supper of the ‘80s.
Happy birthday
@bobdylan
, outlaw, enigma and everything in between. There’s always a new way to do something, always something else just around the bend. Get born.
absolutely losing it currently over the visual image of Bob Dylan shrouded in a hoodie giving Sheryl Crow a heart to heart talk. like some sort of dressed down oracle.
finally got around to this new yorker piece and I nearly spit out my coffee laughing at this little scene between Mavis and Dylan in 2016. truly the one who got away.
this is a surprise to absolutely no one who follows me but petty and dylan are literally my two holy grails. anything involving both of them together……*chef’s kiss* what a great weekend.
This Jann Wenner nonsense hits awful hard. I know many wonderful women writers/musicians but I cannot tell you how many times I have walked into a work-related event and been the literal only woman in the room. I can only hope the tide continues to turn.
Every year I am grateful I don’t use Spotify because if anyone knew how many times I listen to Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ in a single year they would have me committed.
YOU KNOW EVERYONE ALWAYS TALKS ABOUT HOW BOB DYLAN’S CAREER TANKED WHEN HE WENT BIBLICAL, BUT LISTEN TO THE ARRANGEMENTS ON ‘SLOW TRAIN.’ MARK KNOPFLER’S GUITAR WORK ALONE. YOU THINK JESUS HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THAT GROOVE ON “SERVE SOMEBODY”? I DONT THINK SO.
I know we talk a lot about how ornery Bob Dylan can be but I mean, I’m fairly certain that “If Not For You” is the most beautiful love song ever written.
I read most of
@bobdylan
’s new book while sitting on a deck in Duluth, thinking about how a person like him gets from point A to point B. You won’t find those answers here (or in Duluth) but you will find a hell of a window into Dylan’s head. My review:
you could ask any one of my neighbors and they could tell you their favorite version of bob dylan’s “mississippi” not because they are fans but because they have heard the various versions that many times echoing from my apartment
here’s my impression of what dylan might say about these pics if they were found in ‘philosophy of modern song:’
pure, unfiltered cool. looks that kill, no license. leather as smooth as your girlfriend’s legs. the devil can’t get ya if he can’t see your eyes. nothin’ to see here
Watching publicity videos for the Bob Dylan Center and who should show up but Dylan Twitter's own
@allisonrapp22
! Look at her taking notes. The intensity, the focus. Camera person was captivated. I am too. One day that notebook will be in the Allison Rapp Center
it’s 2023 and joni mitchell has been nominated for a grammy, both the beatles and the rolling stones have released brand new music. what a time to be alive.
At least once a week I think about a notorious bootlegger I sat next to at a Graham Nash concert who was recording the show and said to me "you better not be one of those 'WOOOOO' girls"
I "WOOO"ed the whole night long. Ladies, don't ever let a man tell you how to rock n roll.
people often ask me about what I would ask bob dylan if afforded the opportunity and I’m sorry to disappoint but I’d absolutely ask him something ridiculous, like what, if any, hair products he uses, or how he likes his hot dogs grilled
