@BassKade @ParacelsusII no, 'authoritarian' is a word without any substance, and is usually affixed to any government which opposes the global hegemon. so you kind of have that in reverse.

Brazil is often cited as the world's most religious country. Why? Presumably, because its people believe in God and participate in religious rites. But is there any religious rite in Brazil which has as high a turnout as Iranian commemorations of Ashura, Eids, Qadr nights, etc?

But now let's address the other point this young man made: the notion that not only are Iranians becoming irreligious, but that this government (as in, the Islamic Republic) is the cause. There is a certain historical illiteracy that often accompanies this view.

This is an issue of boundaries. In other Islamic countries, while not everyone is متشرع, people have a modicum of self-respect and respect for others. They may not fast, but they will not flaunt their 'roozeh khori'. They may not pray, but they don't mock those who do.

But the Islamic Republic - contrary to its reputation - is quite permissive. And our people - again, contrary to our reputation - are overly tolerant of chimpanzee behaviour. As such, we have a situation where the chimpanzees are brazen in their irreverence.

It is important to establish - before anything else - that this cliche is almost never expressed in good faith. Rather, it is often a projection or an expression of what that person wishes were true. That author wrote that in 1987. It sounds identical to what we hear today.

Regardless of if they were Islamic, Arabist, communist, or nationalist, he said it was ‘absolutely proper, even incumbent’ for such funds to be allocated to the Palestinian resistance. This was in 1968!!! Source for those interested: Khomeini, Sahifeh-ye emam, Vol. 2, p. 199.

This fantasy of a uniformly traditionally religious populace before the revolution needs to stop. Seriously. Far flung rural areas in Kerman had people who weren't متشرع But we act shocked when there are people in Niavaran and Shahrak in 2024 who don't fast???

Are we to imagine that the Pahlavi dynasty and its unapologetic undermining of the (myriads of) manifestations of Islam in Iranian culture was causing people to become more religious???

Did Russia become Christian because Vladimir Monomakh proselytised Buddhism??? The assumption that the masses will become repelled by the official religion of their government is not only wrong but it's the inverse of truth!

I was in Iraq two years ago. I went to most of the major pilgrimage sites: in Najaf, Karbala, Samarra, and so on. Do you know what language I heard the most? Persian. Note: I don't mean the language I heard the most after Arabic. I mean the language I heard the most outright.

I am going to share with you here a piece of the memoirs of a certain man from Kerman (I won't say who!). Note: he was from the tribal regions of Kerman. These were people who did not have roads or electricity or piped water. They migrated in summer and winter. And yet:

And we are talking about tens of millions of people here; not one or two thousand! So why this supposedly secularised people are so over represented in pilgrimage sites? 🤔

The illiteracy comes in the form of an assumption: that if a government propagates religion, its people will reject this. OK... if this were the case, how did Latin America become Catholic? Were the conquistadores propagating new age spiritualism???

And what was to replace these 'oppressive' symbols? 'Parties to celebrate Iranian and international holidays'! Source: Val Moghadam, “Socialism or Anti-Imperialism? The Left and Revolution in Iran,” New Left Review, Vol. 0, No. 166 (November-December 1987), p. 16.

Also: he mentions a beautiful event that happened in the shrine of Agha Imam Reza (a.s.) but I ain't translating that. There's enough deranged thoughts being shared at the moment. (Don't wanna add the 'shia kafir rest in p!ss' lighter fluid to it.)
