To anyone who belives in "unskilled" work: change 50 double duvet covers in an hour. Alone. Help a man with Alzheimer's who is afraid of you and everyone to get dressed and take his medication. And then remember 37 table locations and numbers, and when you went to them all.

yes, Keir Starmer is a talented but boring man. He has a family, he loves his mum, he takes his kids to the football, his wife works in the NHS. But you know what? Great. Most of us are boring people, when you get right down to it. I think the UK could do with a bit of normal.

Not to worry, England, there is a prison crisis in the Netherlands too: a shortage of prisoners. Due in part to, and stop me if this information is too much, having abandoned medieval concepts of retribution and shame and started thinking more practically about human beings.

'everyone would like lower taxes' - yeah, I personally would not. I pay more tax here in NL than I would in the UK, and I pay it for an accessible, highly liveable country in which things are well-maintained. I like that. Living here is nice. Stuff runs and works.

In general I wish they'd just totally remove the words "brave" and "battle" from all dialogue about illness. You don't have to be brave. It's not a battle. You just have to keep on trying to exist as best you can in the face of pain, same as people do. That's all it is.

Much of the UK looks and feels like a poor country. We visit from NL, and it's shocking at times. Everything's tatty. Dysfunctional, high streets boarded up, trains and buses no shows, broken machines, signs of decay and poverty everywhere. It doesn't have to be like that.

Some brilliant, clever, professionally valuable people never earn above £38.7K in their working lifetime. Some people who don't seem to serve any use to anyone earn well above 80k for most of theirs. Honestly, I think salary is the worst way of deciding on immigration rules.

I mean, the basic impression I get is that the UK is about to collapse. There's the usual stuff - dodgy maintenance, classism, shitty private companies that can't run state services competently - I expect all that. This is something else. Something worse.

Being multilingual is fine. Having more then one nationality is fine. Having mixed nationality parents and grandparents is fine. Having a partner of a different nationality is fine. These are normal, boring things that a small, vocal group of twats are frightened by.

A cleaner can be the best of people. A nurse can be formidably bright. A freelance artist can ooze talent and intellect. Yet they would not be welcome to the UK as immigrants under the 'Best and Brightest' plans. It is not about Best and it is not about Brightest. Not at all.

I don't think my parents have any way of coming to terms with the fact our washing machine is in the bathroom and it always will be in any house we live in in the Netherlands. They feel a strong cultural impulse towards putting it in the kitchen they cannot truly explain.

I just think about all the girls/women I've taught - the bright ones, the funny ones, the chatterboxes, the quiet ones, the ones who ask tough questions, the ones who worry like mad about their essays, the ones who coolly ace everything. All those girls exist in Afghanistan too.

To be honest, I used to think there was something terribly wrong with me for liking being alone. I can feel lonely at big parties, when everyone else seems to know someone. But I never feel lonely when I'm alone, doing my things in my own way. It brings me utter peace.

Contactless is already up to 100 euro here in NL - handy at the shops, as it's best to not use keypads during Covid19. So Brexit has nothing to do with it, but whatever.

@redditships Hope I'm not the only person who finds this just very sad. Lose the horse, lose the golf, have a serious talk about what really matters... Kids don't need fancy photographers to do their party when they're eight anyway. They'd usually just prefer it if their dad was there.

I see the Express has decided all "grey haired voters" want tax cuts. Mum's 78, and she sure as hell doesn't. She wants the people she works with at the food bank to get the help they need. Also, she dyes her spiky hair a beautiful coppery brown. Arseholes.

Basically you could summarise my entire view on this Chartwells thing (and so much of UK government policy) like this: poverty isn't a crime to be punished. Siphoning of public funds is, though.

If no one in the media ever asks Liz Truss for her opinion on anything ever again, we will never hear about the opinions of Liz Truss. Just to throw a small idea out there to reflect on.

If someone has no money and is terribly anxious, what they need most is not cookery skills courses, yoga to boost mental well-being, a brisk jog, a foot bath, a good talking to, budgeting tips, a support dog, being yelled at on TV, etc. What they need is... you know. Money.

I didn't vote for Starmer to lead, and Labour aren't enough for me on climate. I have my doubts. But between 'I have doubts' and what I feel about the Conservatives, who've shamelessly wrecked and plundered the country I love, is quite a gulf. I'll vote Labour come the GE.

Not that it's a good situation for Scotland now, but at least they have a leader who can speak coherently (and who likes books!) So will Scotland be accepting English refugees any time soon? I'm nice, hardworking, love salmon, beer, and whisky and can cope with dark winters.
