New article out now! I wrote for @thewire_in about All India Radio's support for nationalism in East Africa - and why these ambitious efforts ultimately failed to overcome political realities.

@jane_whitehouse @thewire_in Thanks so much, Jane! I completely agree - there something so sinister about 'entertainment' in colonial policy. It often came down to the racist belief that Africans were 'immature' listeners who needed distraction over meaningful change - hoping to write more about this later!

I've since read novels that mistake the first and second presidents of Uganda and claim Kwame Nkrumah was in power until the 1970s. I know it's pedantic, but I also feel like fact-checking standards would be higher for historical fiction set on any other continent?

Really trying to get into Kololo Hill by Neema Shah, but I just can't get past the fact that a book about Uganda got the direction of the Nile wrong in its first paragraph?

The photo of Oginga Odinga speaking on AIR is from Feb 1953, when the future VP conducted a 'study tour' of India sponsored by the Nehru government. Curious to see if anyone knows more about this - he wrote about it in 'Two Months in India', but it's hard to track down a copy.

The IRD started working in Kenya on the assumption that 'the African mind' was uniquely susceptible to manipulation by foreign sources. It failed because Kenyans were perfectly able to pick apart Soviet propaganda - and they soon did the same with the IRD's progressive realism.
