Truck driver - cryogenics delivery, former Tesla engineer, Navy veteran, vintage computer hobbyist, retro video game enthusiast… hopeful for the future ☀️
Just took Model Y on a 3,605 mi road trip. Wanted to see what the worst case might look like for charging costs. 5 passengers total, fully loaded frunk and trunk, we drove as fast as conditions allowed and hit several rain storms, used heavy A/C, kids playing video games from the
Here are my statistics:
Trip Miles: 3,605
Total kWh: 1310.58
Wh/mi: 363.55
Total spent charging: $421.84
Avg. Cost per mile: $0.12
Avg. Cost per kWh: $0.32
Total Time Spent Supercharging: 10 hours 58 minutes (did not include destination charges)
12v socket, mini fridge running, sentry mode, cabin overheat protection, and even had a hitch-mounted cargo rack with a spare tire strapped to it. We took advantage of free charging when it was convenient, paid for L2 charging when needed, but supercharged for the vast majority
The average price of gas at the time was about $3.516 per gallon. The money spent charging could have purchased 119.98 gallons of gas. This means that to have made the same trip in a gas-powered car for the same cost, I would have had to achieve an average of 30.0 MPG.
Considering the gear we brought, things we did, features we enjoyed, weather conditions we experienced and speeds we drove, this is impressive. We don't take many road trips and seldom drive fast. We charge at home where we pay $0.15 per kWh. So we pay $0.04 per mile usually. 😃
of the trip. Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio were all visited. I did not need to charge in Kentucky, and only Tennessee had tiered supercharger pricing per minute.

I don’t believe I should burn fuels if I can do without doing so. And the Tesla had Autopilot. Hands down, would absolutely recommend Autopilot for long trips. We charged longer than we needed to, gf and kids always wanting to explore Buc-ee’s! 😂
Here’s my little spreadsheet showing my stops, cost, and time. We often started longer than we needed to because of shopping, food, and bathrooms. This was a road trip, not a cannonball run.
@fau1in
I would have spent 9 hours in a gas car, 3 females on board. 😆 Car drove itself the whole trip on Autopilot. It was incredible. I think Teslas are the BEST for road trips.
The most common question I get about my
@Tesla
is "Would you buy it again?" Then a crazy thing happened. I JUST DID! Thanks

The jaw-dropping economics of electric trucking
The retail price of a semi-truck is often discussed when comparing diesel vs. electric, however the potential disparity becomes far less relevant when the economics of operation are concerned.
I gave nearly a dozen Tennesseans rides in the Model 3 Performance yesterday. They all loved it and smiles all around! One even said that he had a new opinion/appreciation of
@elonmusk
afterward. Don’t hear that often! 😮
4 years ago today, a careless person took you out of my life. I don’t know if it ever gets easier. I hope so. Think about you all the time. Love you brother. Miss you. Rest in peace. 💔
I jump started a coworker’s Buick yesterday. Meanwhile, he was talking about this Infiniti that he was interested in. I offered to let him drive my Performance 3. 30 seconds into the drive, I asked him about the Infiniti he liked. “Infini-what-now??” Hahaha 🤣 No going back! 😄
Every so often I test no-confirmation lane changes. Decided to test it on this latest update (2020.20.12.) Heavy traffic, low speed; car went to make a route-based lane change. It was SO assertive! Just barely enough room for the car. Nearly gave me a heart attack though! 😂
Don’t you love science experiments? I applied a hydrophobic ceramic coating to a few solar panels in preparation for the snow storm to see if they shed the snow more freely.
Just got home from work on

. The car started slowing from 35 MPH much earlier than I was expecting it to (half a block or so) but there was no one around (1 am) so I let it do its thing… then I saw a deer galloping across all four lanes of traffic in front of me. Amazing!
Finally, consider the improvement of the driver's quality of life with smooth, clean acceleration, ample torque, and the ability to keep up with much smaller vehicles in traffic. How much would you pay for a truck with these benefits? 🤔
200 miles * 2kWh per mile = 400 kWh consumed.
400 kWh consumed * $0.07 per kWh = $28.00 fuel cost for this delivery. This is about 14 cents per mile.
In summary:
Diesel cost to move freight 200 miles = $169.76
Electric cost to move freight 200 miles = $28.00
I’m cleaning my frunk at the car wash.
Girl: What? Where’s your engine?
Me: Doesn’t have one.
Girl: It’s not in the back?
Me: No, the back is a trunk too.
Girl: So how does it...?
Me: Motors between the wheels.
Girl: That’s hot!
Me: Thanks! Haha 😜

There will always be proponents and confirmation bias for everything. To each their own, I suppose. I hate burning fossil fuels and try to avoid it. I don’t own an ICE. I think the best metric is I did all this without a dispensing ANY gasoline. 💚
@dremkus
No, there’s no way I could have gotten all the kids back into the car in ten minutes without seeming like a slave driver. We got out and enjoyed our bathroom breaks, shopping, meals, etc. None of us considered it captive time. Our stops were only around 20 minutes each.
In fuel costs alone, the savings are over 83%! Then consider the cost of regular maintenance like oil changes, emission control equipment, brakes, and breakdown time.
Making a trip to the hospital now. My daughter’s school bus was T-boned. Bumped her head pretty good.

can’t come soon enough. Thank you
@elonmusk
and

for making this a reality.
@Tesla
Just rolled over 20,000 fantastic, immensely enjoyable, quiet, blazingly quick, inexpensive yet uneventful miles. Thanks for the memories. Here’s to many more! ❤️

It did, I kept my hand on the wheel as you should. I got to enjoy the scenery instead of making thousands of little steering adjustments every hour. It makes a big difference on road trips, trust me. I’m a million mile trucker.
Take a typical diesel truck, hauling a typical load, with typical fuel prices. Currently, the average cost of diesel in the U.S. is $4.993 per gallon, including taxes.
