Happy 50th Big Dunc. He wasn't even 40 when I embarked on a book about him, back when he seemed a forgotten man. Now something of a national treasure. Amazing Barlinnie is more than half a lifetime ago for him. At a crossroads now. Not many managerial careers begin after 50...

New one today: celebrate Dundee going 3-0 up v Dunfermline while driving past the old Scotsman office on North Bridge, hear they've conceded equaliser by time we've parked up outside the Botanics. Christmas lights show fell a bit flat after that.

Always seemed to speak very warmly about Scottish football, wrote in his autobiography that "the cup final" meant the Scottish Cup final for someone growing up in the north-East of England and made his Manchester Utd debut at Dens Park of all places. RIP Sir Bobby

Read a few comments re. Steven Gerrard heading straight up tunnel after Hearts defeat. I watched him wait for Daniel Stendel to shake his hand, but he - perhaps understandably - was in full celebration mode with staff. Lack of sportsmanship not something you can throw at Gerrard.

Bought this the other day. Very interesting. Dave Mackay on the finest Scottish player he's ever seen. "I have never hesitated to say that Duggie Cowie of Dundee and Scotland was the man." From Soccer My Spur, published in 1961. Cowie died in November, aged 95. @TheDeeArchive

I spoke to the remarkable Bob Seith this week - a double title winner with both Burnley and Dundee, the latter success coming 60 years ago today. As well as this unique claim to fame, I believe he's also the oldest surviving former Hearts manager.

Not many testimonials these days, certainly not for players who still look about 18. I remember Liverpool visiting Dens twice within 15 months in late 80s for George McGeachie and Bobby Geddes. Cammy Kerr every bit as deserving as those stalwarts - & still years ahead of him.
