This is my issue when people talk about equity returns in long term. Had you invested Rs X 20 years ago it would become 1000x now. Retail investors buy company shares, not index. And indexes are kept healthy by constantly churning bad companies.

Not if the growth profile is bad. Investors expect a certain IRR from equity investments and lack of growth does not lead to that. Downside protected though - hence a value buy if growth profile is good
