Before Japan came, we were colonize by the British. Because I am a malay, our people were looked down by the British and the chinese immigrants living in the cities. To get a job there were hard as Malays are treated as a second class citizens.

When Japan invaded Malaya, they reached my grandmother's village first in Kedah. When she told me, the Japanese soldiers and officers were being respectful to the locals there especially my grandmother's family because my grandmother's father is a teacher.

She said that Japan has culture of respecting the their teacher so that's why my grandmother's family were treated really well. They even gave my grandmother a bento sushi as a gift. Noted that my grandmother is just a poor commoner in the village. Not a rich person.

For Japan to did all of that as an invader really shocks me because this is the first time I heard about this from my grandmother's experience. After that the Japanese marched south to continue on with their conquest. They mostly occupied the city so the village were untouched.
