Afiyah means well-being. Asking Allah for Afiyah means to be saved from Distress, Grief, Hardship, Test, and all pain and suffering in both this world and the hereafter. All of this is included in the short but beautiful dua:

The Quran says spouses are garments for each other, which implies protection, support and intimacy. Garments can get torn or stained, but they can be mended & cleaned. So marriage is not about avoiding pain and hardship, but about facing them with patience, compassion and faith.
I don't know, but I haven't seen any description of marriage with hardship & pain in the Quran, so that means if it's looking like war, you're not doing it the right way.
It's suppose to be comforting, you should find love, warmth & joy in your spouse not pain & hardship.
