Today got invited along to a memorial service and Headstone Dedication in Kedington to a local lad George Smith who in 1943 aged 20 went to the aid of the crew of a Stirling Bomber that had crashed in the village. He rescued one man but on returning to the aircraft to rescue 1/2

A Medal that you do not see very often these days as the last veterans are in ther 80s and 90s. 70 years ago this year the Korean war ended. Nearly 1100 British KIA with 81000 serving
Terrible news to hear of the loss of the B17 'Texas Raiders' and five crew in an air accident in Dallas Yesterday (The Aircraft was painted in the colours of the 381st Bomb Group that was based at RAF Ridgewell, Essex during WW2)

Reading about WW2 Arctic Convoys at the moment. Never realised how many German U Boats were sunk by Rocket firing Fairey Swordfish aircraft flown from the escort carriers. Extremely successful
WW2 B17 Flying Fortress Ball Turret. Extremely cramped and would quickly fill with fumes and spent shell casings when in action. There was no room for a parachute and no escape unless the hatch was correctly aligned with the Aircraft 🇺🇸🙏
2/3 the next man he trod on a power cable that had been downed when the aircraft crashed. George Smith was killed instantly.
George was a member of the Home Guard but because he was not considered to be on duty at the time he was never given a headstone by the authorities

Memorial to the fallen overlooking the Battlefield (1984)
RIP Haverhill DDay Veteran Harry Bowdrey who sadly passed away this week. Harry was a landing craft crewman (LCA) on HMS Prince Baudouin. Assigned to take US Rangers into Omaha Beach as part of Assault Group 04. Harry was a Great character and very proud of his Navy Service
As it is the Anniversary of the Battle of Rorkes Drift I thought that I would get the 1875 Martini Henry out for a clean up. It is an Enfield made MK2, but would have originally been made as a MK1
Just about to start watching the box set of Band of Brothers, never watched the series. Even though I worked at Hatfield Airfield when they were filming it there🙂
Actor Donald Pleasence OBE served with Bomber command as a wireless operator during WW2. He completed nearly 60 missions before his aircraft was shot down over France, he was then imprisoned in Stalag luft 1 for the remainder of the war 🇬🇧
Runway built at Port Stanley by Royal Engineers in 1982.
Had to clear UXBs, unload equipment from ships, build port, fuel systems, start quarry, all from scratch. Completed in four months.
British made paper based fuel drop Tanks, 359th Fighter Group, RAF East Wretham
These were one of the unsung inventions of WW2. Helped to Change the fortunes of USAAF operations over occupied Europe
After today's drive and activities. Now harboured up at Son, just to the NE of Eindhoven
For some reason I am surrounded by Half Tracks 🙂🇳🇱🇬🇧

40 years ago this week we completed the extended runway at Port Stanley allowing the first RAF Phantom jets to land. The Air Defence of the Falkland Islands was taken over by the RAF from the RN allowing many ships to return home
Now at Camp Beverloo, Leopoldsburg for a couple of days while awaiting the rest of the vehicles to assemble.
Nice to meet up with some Dutch Bedford QL owners that are taking part in the 30 Corps run 🙂
Part of the cargo which included British Motorbikes and Bedford trucks that were lost on the SS Thistlegorm in 1941 when it was sunk by German aircraft in the Red Sea 1941
@ClubEnthusiasts
Today is Merchant Navy Day. In WW2 alone nearly 40000 merchant navy crew perished transporting vital supplies to aid the war effort.
The Merchant Navy had higher casualties than almost any other of the Armed services
The Bedford QL is now loaded up and Arnhem 80 ready 🙂
Suffolk to Maidstone on Saturday
Maidstone to Dover on Sunday. Meet up with some pals with vehicles from Guernsey
Monday morning, head to the ferry, crossing to Dunkirk then up to Leopoldsburg 🇬🇧🙂
Carry on actor Peter Butterworth was a fleet air arm pilot during WW2. He was shot down over enemy territory in 1940, he made 3 escape attempts. Ended up on Stalag 3 , covered up for the Great escapers as portrayed in the ' Horse vaulting scene'.
Quite an eventful day today. All 250 vehicles travelled one route, in Troops. Each of the ten troops was supposed to have a timed gap. There was a lot of stop, start etc. In the end the QL had enough and played up. Ended up being towed by a half track for a while. Sorted now 🙂
