Today, I welcomed the leadership of the Association of Environmental Lawyers of Nigeria, led by Professor Samuel Chisa Dike, to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). Our discussion centered on the crucial role lawyers play in promoting environmental protection and sustainability. As I emphasized, a sustainable environment is a collective concern. Lawyers must advocate for policies and legal frameworks that prioritize environmental protection. Professor Dike reaffirmed their association's commitment to environmental advocacy and sought partnership with the NBA to advance this cause. The Association of Environmental Lawyers proposed serving as a knowledge partner, providing training for lawyers on environmental issues. They also requested a dedicated session at the upcoming NBA Annual General Conference to drive conversations around environmental law and sustainability. A highlight of the visit was the conferment of the Fellow, Green Advocate of Nigeria title on me – a recognition I deeply appreciate. I reaffirmed the NBA's commitment to supporting initiatives that promote a healthier and more sustainable environment for all. Together, we'll continue using the law as a tool for environmental justice. Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN President, Nigerian Bar Association

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) @NigBarAssoc remains committed to protecting the integrity of the legal profession and ensuring that justice is upheld at all times. We appreciate the Ekiti State Judiciary for its swift intervention in addressing the recent controversial court order and for reaffirming its commitment to fairness, transparency, and the rule of law. The NBA will continue to stand firm against any actions that undermine the independence of legal practitioners or the administration of justice.
Breaking news: Ekiti Judiciary Disowns Magistrate's Order In a swift move, the Ekiti State Judiciary has distanced itself from a controversial order issued by the Ikole Ekiti Magistrate Court. The order, which sparked public outcry and condemnation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) @NigBarAssoc, has been vacated. The judiciary has set up a Panel of Inquiry to investigate the matter and ensure accountability. Reaffirming its commitment to justice, fairness, and transparency, the judiciary vows to uphold the highest standards of integrity and excellence. This move comes after the NBA called for the Magistrate's removal and disciplinary actions. The Ekiti State Judiciary urges the public to remain confident in its judicial processes.

I was pleased to welcome our esteemed colleagues to the NBA–RoLAC Sensitisation Event on the 2023 Rules of Professional Conduct, which commenced yesterday, February 3rd, and successfully concluded today, February 4th, 2025, in Abuja. I appreciate the sacrifices made by all participants to be part of this important event. Your commitment to professional ethics and continuous learning reflects our shared dedication to strengthening the legal profession. The 2023 RPC introduces significant changes that directly impact our practice, particularly in the area of Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance. Last year’s risk assessment highlighted the urgent need for ongoing training in this field. As legal practitioners, we have a duty to ensure compliance while safeguarding the independence of the Bar. The NBA remains committed to upholding financial regulations without compromising our fundamental right to self-regulation. Our profession thrives on independence, and we must be resolute in preserving this core principle. I encourage all who participated to apply the knowledge gained and continue to uphold the highest ethical standards in their practice. The future of our profession depends on our ability to self-regulate and maintain integrity. Together, we will continue to lead by example, strengthening professionalism and upholding the rule of law. Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN President, Nigerian Bar Association

I congratulate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on his historic assent to the Nigeria Maritime University Bill, several years after the idea of the university was muted as one of the possible solutions to the agitation in the Niger Delta. The Nigeria Maritime University will not only create jobs for the people and residents of Niger Delta but will also create opportunities for Nigerians to have specialised skills in the maritime area. The President’s assent is a welcome development towards strengthening the relative peace in the Niger Delta. I urge the people of Niger Delta to protect the institution and ensure that it becomes a conducive learning environment for would be maritime experts. On January 15, 2025, I had the honor of attending the 21st Anniversary of Fawehinmiism, the Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture, organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch. Themed “Nigeria: 15 Years After Gani,” the lecture provided a powerful platform for reflection on the life, legacy, and enduring contributions of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN. In my speech, I charged the audience to imbibe the virtues that defined Chief Gani Fawehinmi—courage, unwavering commitment to justice, and an unrelenting pursuit of the rule of law. Chief Gani’s life was a testament to the power of standing firmly for what is right, regardless of the challenges or opposition faced. His dedication to championing the rights of the downtrodden and his bold advocacy for good governance remain an inspiration to all of us. I took a moment to commend the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch, for their remarkable dedication to consistently hosting this annual lecture. Their commitment to keeping Chief Gani’s ideals alive is a service not only to the legal profession but also to the nation at large. By fostering critical conversations on national progress and justice, the branch continue to uphold the values that Chief Gani so passionately championed. As we reflect on 15 years after Gani, let us, as legal practitioners and citizens, draw strength from his legacy to address the challenges confronting our nation. By advocating for the rule of law, holding government accountable, and defending the rights of the oppressed, we honor his memory and contribute to building a better Nigeria. The NBA remains committed to fostering dialogues that inspire action, unity, and progress. May we all continue to uphold the values of justice, courage, and integrity in our individual and collective pursuits. Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN President, Nigerian Bar Association

Today, Monday January 13, 2025, I had the honor of welcoming Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Mr. Kelvin Okorie, to the Nigerian Bar Association National Secretariat in Abuja. Mr. Okorie, who had been detained by the Nigerian Navy since September 2024, was recently released following the NBA’s intervention. His visit was an opportunity to express gratitude for the Association’s efforts in securing his freedom. The NBA, under my leadership, engaged directly with the Chief of Defence Staff, General C.G. Musa, on January 7, 2025, advocating for Mr. Okorie’s release. This intervention led to his transfer from naval custody to the Nigerian Police and ultimately to his release on January 11, 2025. During our meeting, Mr. Okorie shared his experiences and reaffirmed his commitment to active participation in Bar activities. His resolve underscores the importance of unity and vigilance within our profession. The NBA remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of its members. We will continue to advocate for justice and ensure that no legal practitioner is subjected to unlawful detention or maltreatment. I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Executive Council, the National Litigation Committee, and all members who played a role in this successful intervention.
