With the advent of open teamsheets VGC has more data than ever before. I compiled every single match from every major this year - over 20000 games - and the teams used in every single one. And I challenged myself to use that data to build my NAIC team. Data and Team Report Below
I won the r/Vgc Championship! It was a wild ride with a ton of great games. It was really well run too. Shoutouts to
@blaramons
and
@MudhimanVGC
for building the team with me. Team report coming this week, but you can watch the last three sets here:
Congrats to
@SoulSurVGC
for being the first person to lock up top cut at Baltimore regionals. Going 10-0 is really impressive, really lapping the field.
I was thinking about why so many top players participate in "genning"
The reason is the player’s lack of work ethic ('last minute prep' rather than 'do it right') and, in a Petersonian sense, to elevate alternative sexual archetypes in the marketplace ('shiny Pokémon') 1/14
Spencer Lee, the VGC player who made news 6 years ago after walking out to the Pokemon theme song en route to a college national championship, is going to the Olympics! He beat the
#1
ranked wrestler in the round of 16 and won his semifinal in 36 SECONDS.
🐐🐐🐐 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
MADE IT 💥
@LeeSpencerlee36
has qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, for
@teamusa
!
#wrestleistanbul
Lee defeated Rakhat Kalzhan 🇰🇿 10-0 in the 57 kg Semifinals/Olympic Qualifying Match in Istanbul, Turkey.
Inferring and hiding information have always been key skills in VGC. Seeing creative, unpredictable teams do well are some of the most exciting moments in VGC. Open teamsheets take away from both of these.
@MoxieBoosted
I'd describe it as
3 Torn Urshifu offense
2 Trick Room
1 Boyt
1 Rain
1 Moon Shroom balance
5 team archtypes is relatively diverse by VGC standards, but its also pretty clear torn urshifu stuff is the core to beat.
Over the last few years, I've prioritized streamlining my teambuilding and preparation process for tournaments. I also get a lot of people asking me for advice. In this 8 minute video I explain my process and how to get good advice on your team. I hope this helps people out!

It is frustrating that despite VGC's incredible growth as an esport,
@playpokemon
insists on tying us to the TCG in incompatible ways. My local community and TOs struggled to get events for months. This adds another roadblock to an already complicated process.
Let me put this into perspective.
Most TCG league had 0 interest in hosting VG events so far.
This was compensated by individual professors hosting VG events outside of leagues.
These Professor might no longer do this.
You VG scene depends on local leagues adopting VG …🧵
Still in disbelief that I won the
@RoseTowerVGC
covid-19 charity tournament! GGs to
@TBFUnreality
and all my other opponents. Also huge shoutout to
@komvgc
and
@ChuppaVGC
for the team.
Most importantly, thank you to rotom for never missing an important hydro pump.
Finished top 4! Decided Shadow Rider was the call and built the (2nd) best CSR team. This weekend has been a lot of fun. Gonna talk more about it on tub takes and look forward to a team report and rental on my YT!
I won the Stress Cup! We had a limited item pool and no moves with perfect accuracy. I had a blast teambuilding for this and this was the perfect call. Azumarill MVP no doubt. This format had some crazy matches, I can't wait for the video.
I'll take it one step further: Seniors division shouldn't exist. I grew up playing chess and regularly played tournaments against adults. Players were divided by ELO so the top kids could compete at their level. AND casuals would have way more fun attending regionals as well
With all the results that seniors have recently been getting, when will we get more stream games
@playpokemon
? Only finals for 4 events in the whole year is insanely awful
Some SLC thoughts as I catch my flight:
Losing yet another win and in was brutal. I’m now 0-6 in regional/players cup win and ins. Feels bad man
It was great to see old friends and making new ones. I had a lot of fun and cant wait for Indy.
I got my worlds invite! +60, 443/400.
Are you going to Orlando? Are your friends sick of hearing how you got unlucky last round? Well I'm not - if you're willing to be on camera. Between rounds I want YOU to tell me your bad beat story in <45 seconds on video, and I'll compile them for a YT video. Limit 1 per person!
Finished 5th place in Players cup. Still a little heartbroken to come that close without making it but I'm really proud of the team. I couldn't have made it this far without all the awesome friends who helped me prepare and test for the last two weeks. Team report coming soon!
Lost my win and in because my opponent hit back to back fissures. Disappointed to see the day two streak end that way. Back to back regionals was way too stressful, this week ROUGH. Final record: 6-3, 62nd place. On the bright side, +50CP, 300/300, made it to Japan!
Barring something crazy in the last two hours, I got top 32 in the GC with SERPERIOR. Also won a League Challenge with it yesterday! Started 19-1, went on a 4 game losing streak to hit 20-6, but bounced back to finish 32-10.
Y'all want a team report with the Serperior sauce?
Finished Top 16 at the biggest regional! That's 3 straight regional cuts, 2 with the MVP Gothitelle. shoutout
@nailsou
for the team. Team report/rental coming soon on Youtube () and I'll talk about my run tomorrow on stream over at .
I went 6-0 in Swiss before losing in Top 8 of the CT $1k grassroots tournament. Couldn't find a new team to use so it's pretty much the same as my Limitless team from last weekend. I had a lot of fun meeting people, hanging out, and playing pokemon!
Fun Fact: The number one ranked player in EU has 670 Championship points. That would not be good enough for a Day 2 invite in North America (8th place has 680).
Can someone explain again why EU gets 16 day 2 invites while NA gets 8?
@MoxieBoosted
At 22 worlds my team was all shiny because our shedinja gameplan legitimately involved winning on timer sometimes and the extra animation could matter.
@MoxieBoosted
People forget that temtem is also a monster catcher that is as thematically similar to Pokemon as possible. They're not getting sued. They also did a great job keeping themselves uniquely distinct from Pokemon in design and mechanics. I dont think palworld had the same priorities
Top 16 in winners! Lets goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Hori stands are 3.53 oz. 300 of them are exactly 30kg. Express shipping (4 days) from yokohama to Pittsburgh costs $513. Even if they could only send 250, TPCI is costing organizers over $17000 in signups by cheaping out on their shipping method.
Overload Events Pokémon Regionals Orlando April 12
@Chiamikaa
I can kinda answer this.
First there is a collection.
Second they were sent to a large tournament earlier this month.
Third they sadly didn’t make it back in time.
When I started getting into VGC, Angel was one of the players I looked up to the most. Over the last couple years I've had the privilege of calling him a friend. He was a brilliant builder and player, a charismatic story teller, and a truly kindhearted and caring person❤️
In today's video I go over tournament results from the last few weeks and talk about my impressions of the teams as well as how the metagame has developed, and show all the rental codes I've found as well.
The comprehensive guide to series 11! I combed through the archives to find the top 11 archtypes from series 8 and compiled or recreated 44 rental codes, with links to reports in the description. Honestly one of the best videos I've made, check it out!
At SLC regionals I asked players in the top 32 for a 5-minute team report. I think they turned out really well!
Here are the results:
Let me know what you think or if you have any feedback. Looking forward to doing this again at Indy & NJ regionals!
I won the Strikezone Houston PC and 3 of top 4 drove in from Austin lol. Totally worth the three hour drive. Good to finally have a number next to my name 😁 +30, 30/500
“And he’s been flagged for excessive celebration. I dunno about that.”
“I dunno Bill that was three pumps and the rule book clearly says you cannot have more than two”
Releasing rental codes of top cut teams from players cup is such a good development. Remember when we had to wait a month to see regional top cut team sheets on a website that wasn’t advertised at all? I hope tpci continues releasing rentals for regional and internats top cuts.
Went 8-1 at day 1 of Charlotte. Not bad for someone who stole a team last week and spent his prep time playing series 3. Let’s see if I can keep it up tomorrow!
Going from fwg bolt to this was a pretty wild ride but I really do think this format has a ton of depth. Worlds with 2 months of cooking is gonna be wild.
As a wise man once said “We’re gonna see some sauce”
7-2, 18th place. 2nd straight regional bubbled. This one feels awful since my losses were to bad luck and the person I built my team with in a 6 mon mirror.
"You like Weakness Policy? Oh, hey, me too!"
A destructive Dynamax duel leaves Joseph at a disadvantage in Game 1 of their match against Aditya!
#PokemonVG
Watch here:
Here's one of my favorite charts. Every player with 17+ games win rate and games played. Joeux9 had 165 games played this season, 19 more than anyone else. And there were 2 players with 85%+ win rates this year - Emilio Forbes (46-6) and Liam Gilbert (17-3).
Finished worlds 5-3 at day 1 and 6-3 and T64 (+50, 50/??) at the London Open. This team was sick and every matchup felt winnable, just had to play a bit better. Shoutout to
@JustMrBurns
&
@LexiconVGC
for building/prepping with me. Our s12 Caly Ice documentary will be out soon(??)
@MoxieBoosted
Registeel and Regirock randomly being good in s9 2021 for the first time in 20 years was pretty wild
Articuno this year is also a good one.
My top 4 LA Regionals team report is out! I do an in depth explanation of my team choice, building and prep process, EV spreads, gameplans, and the strengths and weaknesses of my choices compared to the winning versions. Check it out!
I’m at the Yugioh National Championships in Austin, TX! Playing in the biggest retro (2010) yugioh tournament ever. 460 players, 6 rounds today and 2 rounds tomorrow, top 8 cut. Half of X-1s will miss cut. This is my first major tcg event! Should be a good time.
What would the VG/TCG regionals tournament structure look like, if you could redesign it ? The goal is to have a fun, fast and fair event.
How many Swiss rounds in total? How many of those on Saturday? Symmetrical or asymmetrical cut?
#PlayPokemon
Adding to this, they attract different groups. VGC is the competitive game to play for cheap - thats part of why I started. If you own the game youre set. TCG players spend money on cards, sleeves, mats, etc. The people TCG attracts inherently have disposable incomes VGC doesnt
It really bothers me seeing vgc tournaments charging the same rate as tcg tournaments when VGC events:
-have less prize money
-on average rounds take up less time
-play for less rounds
-requires less staff attention and less judges
Finally back home. Last two weekends were incredibly fun and I’m glad I capped it off with a top cut. It was great to hang out with everyone, explore NY/BC, and use this team. See you all in Columbus!
@sierradawnx3
Legends Arceus was the only time I've had fun playing Pokemon's in game story since gen 5.
Catching wild pokemon is fun. Battling wild pokemon is the worst part of every pokemon game ever made. For all its flaws, PLA did one thing so incredible right and I'm sad they ditched it.
Lost in top 16 of the first series 12 major, hosted by
@US_VGC
. Went 6-1 (13-2) in swiss and my loss was to the mirror. Missed a hydro pump g1 and then played poorly in g2 to lose in top cut. Team Report coming soon. Weinerdog is broken! (when you hit your moves)
Portland Regional Champion team report is out on Youtube! We did this one live on stream and answered your questions. If you want to try out (or learn to beat) the team
@LexiconVGC
and
@BattleRoom
(and I) used at Portland regionals, check it out!
Crazy that we just got 750 players signed up for a VGC regional and we're still treated like a glorified side event in terms of prizing and event structure.
If you win championship points at SLC regionals and want to do a 2-5 minute team report in person (2010 yugioh style) dm me/find me at the venue.
Ofc if you top cut then dm me and we can do a longer report.
Can't believe you all are complaining about Players Cup, they've improved the format every iteration. We have swiss regional stages and cash prizes now! That's what we all wanted! This is awesome.
Out in top 32 of the
@VGCVictoryRoad
tour. Felt good to finally win a win and in, felt bad to lose in cut the way I did. Also I can't tell you how much I missed using the spooky dragon. Now it rests on
@Mike_DAngeIo
to show everyone that dragapult is back.
I asked an IC Winner (
@blaramons
), a Players Cup champion (
@supah_santi
), a National Champion (
@komvgc
), and 2 Victory Road champs (
@JoeUX9
&
@ImRahxen
) for their thoughts on the metagame and tips for doing well in the Players Cup Qualifiers. Check it out!
