We did years ago! We surveyed the corals, sponges, fish, macroalgea (Nacorda et al 2017) as well as marine microbes (Gajigan et al in review). Give us funds so we can study it further. Support PH scientists!
Saying that Hannah was brainwashed to join the NPA is an insult to her intellect and her agency. Walang nasasayang na buhay kapag pinaglalaban mo ang alam mong tama. Bakit nga ba, the best of us join the revolution, what does it say about the society we live in?
An MIT Physics prof who is a climate change denier. A Stanford prof publishing an erroneous COVID19 meta-analysis. Now a Nobel Prize winner defending the use of Ivermectin.
We need to get rid of our obsession with titles and awards, and the myth of a lone scientific hero.
Yesterday, I attended the BBM welcome event in Hawaii. One of the most gut wrenching and distressing things I’ve ever witnessed. I see people jumping, partying, singing…underneath all of it are the blood of fellow Filipinos.

Every time I go to a conference - this time the AACR! - I'm reminded of how in our science community we need everyone: the quiet, the loud, the big thinkers, the experts, the tech developers, the critics.. And together we create the impressive achievements of science!
For folks who plan to leave the Philippines when Marcos wins presidency, one thing to note is one will still eventually inherit another version a political turmoil. Indigenous displacement in the US. Proxy wars in middle east. Rise of right wing politics in Europe.
Vaccine development in a year is an outstanding human achievement. The only thing preventing me from celebrating is the vaccine apartheid created by wealthy nations hoarding the supplies + pharma’s restrictive patent.
the stories are funny to some extent then u realized how detach some ateneans are and how eventually they will run the country, non profits, & private institutions. we are doomed! institutions like ateneo exists to maintain status quo hence inequality
The awful truth on the conditions of Filipino cruise ship workers which is 1/3rd of the world's cruise employees! workweek of 70 hours, the Philippine government essentially not allowing the workers to file legal action against cruise companies.
The work done by Filipino scientists in the homeland is at par or sometimes better than the rest of the world despite being in resource limited environment. Imagine what they could do with proper compensation and infrastructure.
There are so many mistakes on this thread. Let's try to correct some of them.
First, the tropics is NOT DEAD. Chlorophyll is a bad measure of how "alive" the water is. In fact, the tropics is teeming with plankton and very productive similar to the polar regions (see map).
Why are tropical waters so transparent?
Because they're dead.
This is connected to why some scientists fear global warming could make Europe *colder*
And freeze 80% of all humans above the 60th parallel:
It’s official! I am thrilled to share that I received a grant from Nat Geo to support our work on marine viruses and red tide, among others. a collab with my colleagues in Hawai'i and the Philippines. Can’t believe it, super excited!!!

I emailed my prof back in PH, and they found 3 other papers from Chinese Academy of Science published with data taken without the Philippine govt consent. So this is now the 4th! This was reported to DFA last year. And apparently, there's still no action from the govt!
China has been sampling illegally within the Philippine waters. As an example, this 2012 cruise, published just this year in Nature Scientific Reports, shows the sampling sites within the Philippine EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone).
You know what will increase Philippine GDP?
National industrialization
Landback to the Indigenous people
Genuine agrarian reform
Ending unequal foreign relations
basically addressing the root cause of the insurgency
di ko sure ha🙄

In front of Philippine consulate expressing our indignation on Imee Marcos’ visit to Hawaii.
Hawaii court ruled Imee Marcos guilty of Trajano’s torture and murder. Another Hawaii ruling proved Marcos family’s theft and plunder.
We,

My wish for Hawai'i is to be ready for the next coup. While the colonizers are scrambling, the systems will be in place for it’s independence. As such, the US stronghold on the Pacific will soon fall. Free Guam, Free The Philippines and other Pacific nations.
Not happy about this tbh

The sign of a great leader is adaptability, if the senate slate was deliberated months ago and we have new insights showing how balimbing Zubiri is then he should be out. Make space for competent folks

Asked if she will add Neri Colmenares to her Senate slate, and possibly remove Migz Zubiri, Robredo says: "Puno na kami...walng gagalawin doon...matagal na debate ang nangyari bago inanunsyo yun."

Hello. The premise of the post is misleading.
The tropics is NOT dead. Blue region in maps actually mean low not zero. Chlorophyll is a bad measure of how "alive" the water is. In fact, the tropics is teeming with plankton and very productive similar to the polar regions.
Manila apologist talaga ako. Despite the cruelty of the city, maraming bagay ang nagpapasaya sa akin dito. Mga tao, mga bitbit nilang kwento, ang Intramuros, Binondo, Ermita, at mga simpleng pailaw sa underpass.

Conservation, marine science folks. This needs to stop. 🚨🚨🚨
A huge disappointment. A clear example of

where global north scientist exploits local scientists. Not giving opportunity for local collaborators to engage in planning and writing in the first place.

Lest we forget there’s a US arrest warrant for the Marcoses for corruption and human rights abuses. He is using diplomatic immunity to be able to fly to the US. As we are all susceptible to historical amnesia, it is important to continously oppose the revisionism.

. Hopefully the cheating is just a small part. I hope it focuses on the enduring struggle of the youth between idealistic and realistic self, between ‘life happens’ versus ‘staying true to one’s calling’

I hate it when the older generation use the concept “ang kabataan ang pagasa ng bayan” as an excuse to not do anything. Like you have the material resources to implement changes in your immediate community.

Hello! Kapag naiisip ko yan, I always go back to what Santiago Ramón y Cajal said (Founding Father of Neuroscience):
We should not rely on heroes! Passionate ordinary people with average skills will move the society forward!
I feel like the cycle of writing and revising is the most excruciating thing we do as scientists. Not only because we need to find the exact words (a rare occasion for me), but also one gets to confront years of work—all its glory and imperfections. 1/n
History of Science should be a requirement for all scientists. While at it we should also require social sciences and humanities electives. Liberate yourself.

What I hate about Jollibee is the acquisition of Greenwich, Red Ribbon, Chowking, Mang Inasal, Burger King, Coffee Bean and others. We see worsening of its products. Having options is a myth in a capitalistic society. Yun lang. Plus I miss the old chowking, red ribbon. huhu.
Dream come true. 😭 I applied for this grant in 2015, at the letter of intent stage it was rejected. I had another research idea circa 2017. Developed and wrote this proposal in 2019. Now its funded! Science takes time.
I get what Justice Leonen is saying but I fear for every Filipino if the Anti-Terror Law is not stopped. The state repression is so strong that any technicality will not erase that fact

This is a reminder, while important, there are bigger problems affecting the ocean than plastics and sunscreens. Like ocean warming, overfishing, capitalism, poverty, overproduction, inequality, lobbying by oil companies, existing power structures.
