It was a real pleasure to revisit an old but beloved subject of mine—men who are shitty to date/sleep with—in the first issue of @the_met_review, a new pub edited by @RossBarkan. Thankfully, he let me run long, as I have much to say abt these f*ing guys:

@valerie_reads i suspect you are right about the unlikeliness or else the chastening would consist mainly of more brooding about how dark and complicated and unsuited to ordinary life he is because of his extraordinariness, not actual change in behavior/tenor of thoughts.

I don't know about others (?), but I have never been able to listen to the audio versions of my books—too cringe-y to hear my own words. But I've been told that the reader of "Help Wanted" is terrific, & so I'm especially happy to see this: cc: @wwnorton

It's very nice to see "Help Wanted" on this @TIME magazine list, but also cool that @nplusonemag may—or may not!—recommend it to readers who take their annual Bookmatch quiz. Here's how you can find out if the editors of n+1 think you might like it:

I am so pleased to have been invited to have this conversation. I mean, I like talking about the literary side of things as much as anyone, but one doesn't write a novel like this if one doesn't have some... uh, *thoughts* about economic issues. Thanks, @Rohan_Sandhu.
Help Wanted is one of the best books I've read on place-based economic distress in the US, the precariousness of low-wage work, etc. So I'm especially looking forward to this conversation with @adellewaldman at @Kennedy_School next week. Sign up here:

@lisquart @PhilipRoth_NPL You should definitely be on this podcast! I am going to float it to the host, just for selfish reasons--bc I want to hear what you'd have to say.

This was a really fun podcast to be on. Re-reading The Ghost Writer reminded me why I love Roth, as well as why I find him infuriating, both of which I tried but surely failed to fully articulate. I also appreciated co-panelist Andrew & host Sam's thoughts, even where we argued.
We're excited to announce the launch of our new podcast, Roth and Company. The first episode, about The Ghost Writer, features @adellewaldman and Andrew Martin. Please subscribe and give us a rating to help spread the word!

This is a terrific piece that's both about Philip Roth's research process & abt the nature of fiction more broadly. Also fun: @samgrahamfelsen shows us how Roth took factual descriptions from nonfiction & turned it into stuff that's all his. @nytimesbooks
