London, 1841. The Rajah sails for Australia. Aboard: 180 women convicted of petty crimes.
They have only each other. Until the murder.

I was the *only* person visiting the John Sargent show who saw it alongside Ellen Terry’s great granddaughter, the artist Helen Craig! Felt very honoured! The crystal pendant Helen is wearing belonged to Ellen Terry!
Which means that half the nation would mind very much indeed. Me included. This kind of reasoning is mad… quite a lot of people don’t read books. Shall we close libraries?
Just caught up with last night’s
#ThisWeek
. I am going to miss
@afneil
and his chums so much.....can’t the programme go to another channel? It’s another example of trying to fix something that ain’t broke on the part of the BBC. 😟
Brewster, my lovely grand-dog, died today. He loved my garden and I’m glad he got to spend many very pleasant hours in it since January. He had the happiest of lives….

Devastated by the news of Jill Paton Walsh’s death. She was a dear friend of mine and was here at my house for lunch two weeks ago, with her beloved new husband. May she rest in peace. A fine writer and a wonderful person.
Just for info, I don’t fly and have twice travelled to Lake Como in a day by train via Zurich. Leave Cambridge at sparrow fart. Eurostar to Paris. Reach Como San Giovanni about 8.00 pm. Fabulous trip. Take a Kindle!
Huge news!
@PersephoneBooks
is moving to Bath! A fresh lease of life in a beautiful place.... tho will be much missed by Londoners. I will find excuses to visit the new shop! Good luck to all who work for this brilliant publisher!
After 75 years of extreme short sight, I am typing this (and reading) with no glasses. It feels like a miracle. Too little praise is given to absolutely transformative cataract operations and those who perform them. Had my second yesterday and can see a rose growing 60’ away…
Anne Fine(who lives in Co.Durham) just phoned. She told me my first Corona joke: Corona will only come to Durham if it can’t get into Oxford or Cambridge. 😄
This gives me *such* pleasure! EJH is indeed a genius and the Cazalet Chronicles is a flat out copper-bottomed masterpiece! From yesterday’s

Hearing about vaccination going on in Salisbury Cathedral, with organ music in the background. What a brilliant use of the building. Hope other cathedrals follow suit.

My lovely vaccinator! Everything brilliantly arranged and working like clockwork. Hats off to

Hurray for
@AnthonyHorowitz
and Meg Rosoff shouting about the dearth of school (and public) libraries leading quite naturally to children reading less for pleasure. Every school needs a library run by a LIBRARIAN, not an overworked teacher!

Just booked in for a vaccination tomorrow at 9.30! Very grateful to
@NHSuk
and excited! I’m going to make myself a Celebratory Inauguration/Vaccination Crumpet with lashings of butter!
Year11/13 who are sad, here’s a comforting truth. What you learned for exams STAYS WITH YOU! My head is packed with what I was examined on in 1960/62. An exam is *only* that. You get to keep and use the knowledge forever. I’m 76 and could write an essay on Twelfth Night now.
Very sad to read of the death of one of the very best of novelists. ASByatt has died at the age of 87. Time for a reread….may her memory be for a blessing.
That’s what friends are for! The multi-talented

All who love Hilary Mantel’s Cromwell novels should also read CJSansom’s outstanding series of detective stories starring Matthew Shardlake:a lawyer whose boss is Thomas Cromwell. First in the series is called

1: Fewer children than ever are being read aloud to. Parents, it’s VERY VERY important to do this. I realise time is very short, but it’s SO good for them. As good as broccoli!
New cop Shane in

has something of young Kenneth Branagh about him. Many congratulations to everyone involved. It’s as good as ever.. I’m moving seamlessly to Episode 2. But saving more episodes for tomorrow!
It’s the 75th anniversary of
#TheRedShoes
. This was the first film I ever saw when I was almost 5 and it made a massive impression on me. I have, eg, always longed for red hair and have filled my novels with red-headed heroines.
Here’s a photo of my idea of Hell. I’m sitting indoors in a coolish room with a sleeping dog on the sofa. You wouldn’t get me on to this beach, not even for ready money. Nothing to do with pandemics!
I've just seen among all the other bad news for the arts in Birmingham that the council is closing 25 out of 36 libraries - genuine cultural vandalism. Libraries are one of the few community resources left in the UK: they offer incalculable support and value.
I’m completely prepared to be proved wrong, but if I’d created the Perfect Thing that is

I don’t think I’d try to write a sequel or revive it in any way… we shall see!
Today marks 8 weeks since I went into lockdown. Missing certain things but basically fine. Easier for writers, this way of life. Very grateful for all technology : tv, podcasts, Zoom, etc and knitting. And newspapers! And gorgeous weather. And books....
Anyone who has missed the Queen speaking about her life and sharing her home movies has missed something very beautiful and moving. I can’t recommend strongly enough that you watch on IPlayer. I’m glad to have bought Jubilee souvenirs! 👑👏👏💐
On a train. Five 15 or so year old boys in the bay next to mine are just having a *quiet * chat about mainly football and they’re being totally civilised and lovely in every way. 😀 Gladdens the heart.
Any who rail against possible Govt legislation re over 70s should consider this: if loose in the population, more of them will catch Covid-19 and put huge strain on NHS. I for one am perfectly happy to be “sheltered.” I think the language is important.
Wow! I just LOVE

. Cormoran and Robin are ace and so is the skinny cop...fabulous telly. And if you’ve not read the books, you should! They’re even better👍❤️
Listening to

is inspiring. One thing stands out. His dad took him to the library for fun every Saturday. A good friend (she knows who she is!) reckons home schooling during pandemic should have been READING. Nothing else. READ!
Basically, the more

All articles bemoaning the lack of Big Literary Beasts these days have failed to take account of MANY formidable women writers. I give you Anne Tyler
@LizStrout
and Kate Atkinson for starters. There are lots more….
Prince Philip was my very first pin-up. I’ve been dazzled by him since the Coronation and am sad thinking of what the Queen must be feeling. May his memory be for a blessing.
In today’s podcast, Tom and Dominic discuss the rise of the YOUNG NAPOLEON, from his birth and upbringing in a politically tumultuous Corsica, to his time studying in a military academy in France, and his growing identification with the ideals of the French Revolution...
Very good interview with

Me in the summer of 1961, I think. 17 years old. On our verandah in Dar-es-Salaam. Follow the sea visible between the palm trees and you’ll soon arrive in Zanzibar. We could sometimes smell the cloves…
Merry Christmas and Happy 2024 to my followers. And big thanks to the journalists and radio presenters who’ve kept me informed, entertained and moved this year. I’m sure you know who you are!

And of course my occasional reminder that it's called My Fair Lady as that's how Eliza would pronounce Mayfair. The greatest and most understated phonetic pun in any movie title.

I caved in, didn’t I? Have just watched

and it’s as beautiful as everyone has been saying. Intensely moving and every performance absolutely spot on. Special accolades to Lily James and Ken Stott. Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes...well. Superb!
My mum,

A great way to end your degree course: a West End revue and a Parlophone cast recording. John Gould, Bob Scott, Adele Weston, David Wood – Four Degrees Over
I started reading Agatha Christie when I was about 12. Read everything and can hardly remember anything beyond the fact that they were ace and I gobbled them up. Movies etc have reminded me of plots but need to reread after 65 years! Starting with this!
