Subaru was a big part of the international rallying scene in the '90s, and its Impreza WRX (World Rally eXperimental) models reflected that. This 1997 Japanese brochure included the sportiest STi Version IV models, in sedan, sports wagon and coupé form.

A product of the dying days of Saab, the 9-3x was a sensible enough idea, a rugged all-wheel drive (XWD in the company's own terminology) 'lifestyle' edition of the existing 9-3 Sportwagon, with 2.0T power. It features in this Belgian brochure from 2010.

The final Mazda Cosmo, launched in 1990, was the company's rotary-engined flagship. Sold under the Eunos marque, it was only offered in Japan. A luxury coupé, its two power units included a mighty triple-rotor twin turbo engine, unique to the model.

Spain was still isolated from the European mainstream in the '70s, so car makers wanting a slice of the market needed a local production base. Citroën built the GS at its plant in Vigo. Top-of-the-range was the Palas, (diverging from the French spelling).

A decade after the first turbocharged Saab was introduced, the 175bhp Turbo 16S was the pinnacle of the latest 900 range, which had received a new sloping nose for 1987. Featuring the 3-door Combi Coupé body, the 16S stood out thanks to its three-spoke alloys.

One of the most extraordinarily-styled cars of its era, the 1989 Alfa Romeo SZ - often simply called 'il Mostro' (the Monster) - was an exotic halo car for the company. Constructed by Zagato using composite moulded panels, some 1,000 were built.

Fiat Brazil treated its version of the Marea sedan to a facelifted rear end during 2001, just as the car was winding down in Europe. A new bootlid shape was designed, accompanied by adopting the distinctive rear lights of the Lancia Lybra.

A Pontiac that never was, the G8 6.0-litre pick-up was supposed to join the range for the 2010 model year. It was based on the Ute version of the Australian Holden Commodore. Unfortunately events overtook the plans, as Pontiac itself was terminated in 2009.

During a brief time when the stars of Saab and Subaru crossed within the GM orbit, the Saab 9-2X was born for the North American market. In hindsight, this restyled Subaru Impreza wagon was arguably one of the lesser sins inflicted by GM on the Swedish marque.

Turkey's own car, the Otosan Anadol, got a new look for the '70s thanks to modernised styling, now in both 2- and 4-door form. The model used the expertise of Reliant for its glassfibre body, while Ford UK provided the 1298cc engine and other components.

Looking very Hummer-like, the remarkable Toyota Mega Cruiser was made from 1995 to 2002. Although primarily for military use, it had a civilian version, sold on the Japanese domestic market, featuring a 4.1 turbodiesel engine. This is a 1999 brochure.

First seen in 1987, the stylish 405 became a long-lasting hit for Peugeot, and manufacture in Coventry helped make it a big seller in the UK market.
This 1994 brochure devoted plenty of space to the 155 bhp Mi 16 Le Mans flagship model of the saloon range.

The classic Saab 900 range was maturingly nicely by 1985. The third-generation version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, with 16 valves and Automatic Performance Control, produced 175bhp and was fitted to the top-of-the range Turbo 16 and 16S models.

Toyota expanded its horizons in Europe with the arrival of the 2.8-litre six-cylinder Celica Supra in 1982, one of the company's most ambitious offerings there to date. Derived from the regular mk3 liftback, the brochure called it 'the greatest Celica yet'.

Audi spent the '80s gradually working towards becoming a credible rival for BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Its initial V8 quattro (in 3.6 and 4.2 versions) helped the company enter a new class, although the body was a modified 100/200. This late brochure is from 1993.

Bitter never made the big time as a German luxury car brand, but its SC was quite a looker. This 1979 brochure is simply called 'Impressions', showing off the car in a variety of settings. Bitter worked with Opel, so the SC was based on the new 3.0 Senator.

When I was a child I first became aware, via the 'Top Trumps' card games, of the rare supercars made by Swiss marque, Monteverdi. Brochures are hard to come by, but here's one '70s example, on the elegant 375L 2+2 GT, powered by a Chrysler 7.2-litre V8.

Turkish car maker Otosan, closely linked to Britain's Reliant, was best-known for its small saloons. In 1973 it launched a surprise 'halo model', the Anadol STC-16 sports car, with the 1600cc engine from Ford's Escort Mexico. Reportedly only 176 were built.

Launched in 1966, the simple, stylish 124 saloon was a significant step forward for Fiat, though ironically nowadays its looks are more clearly remembered thanks to the bodystyle being licenced to the USSR, creating the ubiquitous Lada 1200 and derivatives.
