The day George Pell died, we were in mum’s hospital room, she’d been sleeping most the morn. I said to my sis & Aunty we should let mum know he died. My Aunty leaned over & told mum — mum didn’t open her eyes, but she very slowly lifted her hands and clapped. It was perfect
For those asking why students can’t ‘strike on their own time’:
1. That’s literally not what striking is
2. Would you be talking about it & climate action as much if it wasn’t during school hours?
3. There’s no school on a dead planet
Proud to be striking with students today 👊
Tonight
@MerribekCouncil
has voted to call on the Aus Govt to support an immediate ceasefire & the lifting of the siege on Gaza, and the freeing of all hostages. We also agreed to fly the Palestinian flag at Coburg Town Hall for 6 months in recognition of the situation 🇵🇸
I didn’t expect this to be shared much. Thanks to those giving advice, we‘d submitted a medical certificate that should exempt mum from mutual obligations (only for 3 months). The system is designed to make *everything* hard, and for people who need support. It is so deeply wrong
Proud to say
@morelandcouncil
just voted to support renaming our city 🥳 Traditional Owners & community members requested we change our name because ‘Moreland’ ties us to a history of racism, slavery & dispossession. 6 votes for, 3 opposed (2 Councillors were apologies).
Am I missing something on the Pfizer allocation outrage? Isn’t it a good thing that more people in NSW got vaccinated when they have the highest number of cases in the country?
Yesterday my BF and I went to a rental inspection, applied for it & today we got offered it! It's a house with a backyard and hopefully no angry homophobic neighbours 🤞 Big step up from our current unit that has no outdoor space and has felt so confining throughout lockdown🥳
This morning I was proud to be one of 7 Councillors voting to support Merri-bek City Council as the new name for our city, after we heard from our community that ‘Merri-bek’, meaning ‘rocky country’ in Woi-wurrung, was the preferred name 🖤💛❤️
Dutton referring Bruce Pascoe to AFP to apparently investigate his identity is completely fucked.
It’s also hit the news the same day the Fin Review reveals Dutton’s Dept sat on a climate risk action plan for 1.5 yrs.
Is he going on the attack to distract from his culpability?
My partner checked his student debt & rather than 📉, it’s 📈 by ~50% as he didn’t earn over the threshold where repayments kick in til just recently. Now he has $1000s more in debt. Scrapping tax cuts for high income earners & cancelling student debt is a good idea
5 years ago today I was waiting to hear whether people voted yes to marriage equality. Just a couple of weeks later, I met a babe’n, smart, kind-hearted man named Niccolò. 5 years on from the yes vote and after a last-minute wedding in July, I’m (unlawfully) married to him 🥰🏳️🌈
It saddens me so deeply that some senior people in the Greens don’t stand side-by-side trans & gender diverse people in their struggle for justice. I have always known the Greens to fight for marginalised people’s rights and against prejudice and discrimination —
I’m a proud gay man running for Parliament, up against a Liberal candidate who hates people like me. When people seek public office to spread hatred & division, we must stand up to their hate & make sure we elect voices who champion all of us
BREAKING:
@MerribekCouncil
has just voted to rip out the protected bike lanes on Kent Road in Pascoe Vale. I’m so disappointed – we lost by just one vote, with Labor and Socialist Councillors voting to remove the bike lane 😔
THANK YOU MORELAND!
I feel very excited and grateful to have been provisionally elected as a Councillor for North-East Ward! AND all four of our Greens candidates have been provisionally elected to Moreland!! 🥳💚
Results will be formally declared later this afternoon.

This week my mum was told her cancer is not able to be removed. We now have to switch to a different kind of care for her. I’ve been regularly going interstate to visit mum and help care for her. Through this I’m trying to balance my Council, work and family responsibilities.
Please, Labor, just vote down the damn Religious Discrimination Bill. If all of your MPs in the House join
@AdamBandt
, the Independents and the Lib MPs willing to cross the floor, there *might* be enough numbers to just stop the bill right then and there.
Moreland: were you in our parks over the weekend and noticed the need for more toilets, toilet paper and/or bins? I was at Brunswick Park & lots of people were using the bushes as the toilet was very busy & dirty. Let me know & I'll raise it at tomorrow's Council meeting! 🚽🧻🚮
Who cares about the flag honestly let’s talk about the climate crisis, the housing and homelessness crisis or the fact that the Australian Government is happy to keep people on welfare living below the poverty line
Good news! 🥳 All Moreland Councillors just passed my motion boosting by $50,000 the grants we're offering to local artists & art orgs! Artists have been some of the hardest hit by the pandemic & now more artists & art orgs will have their projects funded by

BREAKING: The Liberal candidate for Wills has just resigned following news that he encouraged people to do what they can to keep gay people, like me, out of Parliament. Can you chip in now to support my campaign against hatred and division?
A vocal minority is against changing Council’s name from Moreland to Merri-bek. A few people comment on every post: “people are furious, nobody wants this”, yet they’re drowned out by all the residents saying “glad to see this important step!” Imagine having that confidence.
I grew up closeted in a conservative church & community. I know what it’s like to feel different, like I'm wrong & don’t belong. It took me years to come out. It's hatred like that pushed by Liberal Peter Killin that makes it harder for young people to be proud of who they are
I’m sick of other Councillors who say they support protected bike lanes or climate action, but when the rubber hits the road - or the bike lanes hit the streets - they show their true colours. There’s no leadership, all reaction.
It’s official: I’m standing as the
@Greens
candidate for North-East ward in this October’s Moreland Council elections! Thank you Moreland Greens members for choosing me as your Council candidate 💚
I'm excited to announce I’ve been preselected as
@Greens
candidate for Wills! Thanks to members who put their faith in me. Together we’ll run a people-powered campaign to change politics right here from Wills. If you can, pls chip in & help us get started:
Fully vaxxed!🥳
Nicco and I just got our second dose of AZ at Inner North Medical!
It feels great to be fully vaccinated. Not only do I feel good knowing both my partner and I are better protected from COVID, I’m proud to be doing our bit for public health 🥰
@jamesmassola
@SenatorThorpe
Come on James, Lidia isn’t claiming credit for it. She’s saying pressure from grassroots activists on 26 Jan has finally led to the Vic Gov cancelling the celebration
It's infuriating to see report after report of former PMs & Ministers saying we need climate action -- when they were in power AND COULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT they actively contributed to making climate change *worse*. We cannot let them off scot-free.
Protected bike lanes make it safer for people riding around our community, and they help more people, especially women, feel safe to switch to using bikes to get around. They help cut emissions. We’re in a climate crisis that demands urgent action —
MASSIVE turnout in Naarm for the

rally! Voting YES is our chance to take a step towards a better future — and to make sure First Peoples are always heard on the issues that affect them

@yes23au
Feeling lots of love for this beautiful man and also for all the lovely replies and well wishes, a bunch from people who don’t know us but just love love ❤️ the very best of Twitter.
If everything goes to plan, in 30 hours my BF & I will be landing in Milan to see his family for the first time in two years. There’s a new nibling to meet, and two more who will be much bigger than when we last saw them. It’s a scary time, again. But things to look forward to 🤞
The
@Greens
will act on the climate emergency. Here’s how:
☀️ 100% renewables by 2030
🛑
#StopAdani
and all new coal & gas
❌ Ban thermal coal exports from 2030
💰 Tax carbon pollution
🚗 Kick-start the electric vehicle revolution

@AdamBandt
As Uncle Bill said in his Welcome to Country, our city’s new name will actually be giving the Country we all live on its voice back — Country that has been home to the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people for tens of thousands of years.
Thank you to the community members & groups who contacted Councillors asking to save the bike lanes. Please continue speaking up and fighting for safer, cleaner, greener and more accessible streets -- despite how tonight went, I think there's more we can win for our community.
Yes if Frydo & Tim Wilson lose, the Libs will stop being the moderate party that it is today. You know, the one that locks up refugees, pays polluters to burn the planet, attacks trans people, hands public $ to private schools, cuts taxes for the wealthy..
🥳 I got a job! I’m joining
@healthy_climate
working with health groups & workers to secure urgent action on the climate crisis 👩⚕️🌏
It’s a great org with huge ambition and I can’t wait to get to work 👊☺️
I’m excited that our city will move on from the divisive name ‘Moreland’, which connects our thriving and diverse community to a history of racism, slavery & dispossession. We will now have a name that can bring us all together.
Yes this is how debt works, but education shouldn’t work like this. Individuals and society both benefit from higher ed, we shouldn’t be locking people out of going to TAFE or uni because they can’t afford it or don’t want to take on thousands of dollars in debt
Now the ball is in the Federal Labor govt’s court: will they use the Liberal-era punishment of stripping Councils that show solidarity with First Nations people of their right to hold citizenship ceremonies? With the Voice referendum one of their key stated priorities, I hope not
Some more good bike news 🥳🚲
@MerribekCouncil
has just voted to save the Kent Road protected bike lanes in Pascoe Vale! If this decision stands, this is a win for community members & groups who spoke up about the need and strong demand for safe cycling infrastructure in our city
This requires us restructuring our cities to cut emissions & build resilience. The reality is our neighbourhoods will change, the sooner we embrace this, the sooner we can meet our community’s want for a greener, healthier & more accessible city – and we can all reap the benefits
In response to today's headlines on queer people:
1. Homosexuality is NOT a fashion trend
2. Trans people should be able to serve in the military if they choose
3. If the Fed govt has $6.7m for a 're-enactment' of a fake ship trip, it can find $310K for older LGBTIQ Victorians
Tonight
@MerribekCouncil
approved the four development proposals before us at our Planning Meeting — approving many more homes to be built in our community. Including some great developments that are fossil fuel-free, will build affordable housing and create more open space 🏫🌳

Are you serious? Holy shit that’s fucked. I’m sorry. My mum has pancreatic cancer too. We’ve submitted a medical certificate that will hopefully work 🤞 she needs to be resting and fighting the cancer, there is no way they can expect her to work in some form
The Fraser Anning person was confronted by a Muslim woman. He said to her face ‘her people’ are responsible for extremism and terrorism, that there’s no white extremism. She stood her ground firmly, and the Victorian Socialist volunteers and candidate and I stood by her side.
On Sunday, a group of Moreland citizens wrote to all Moreland Councillors letting us know about the disturbing origins of the name 'Moreland'.
THREAD 🧵:
Having spent so much of the past two years in lockdown, it’s become so normal that when I’m feeling down or sad I find myself wondering why, and then have to remind myself ‘oh yeah that’s right we’re still in lockdown’
long before public support for these groups of people becomes mainstream.
Trans & gender diverse people clearly exist. They’re here, our friends, our colleagues, the volunteers and leaders within our party. They should feel and be safe in all corners of our party and community.
What a way to kick off
#NAIDOCWeek
! Thanks to everyone who has joined in the conversations around our community about the name change & the real history of this land. The next step is for the Local Government Minister to sign-off on the name change — will keep you posted!
We are an evidence-based party. We clearly wouldn’t support people leading our party with prejudiced views counter to the evidence based on race or sexuality or disability, so why should it be different for people with these views on trans & gender diverse people?
2 years with this beautiful boy by my side 🥰👨❤️👨 he doorknocked his way through an 18 month election campaign, he patiently supported me through 3 months of recovery and unemployment afterwards, he goes to bed and wakes up next to me everyday..
Handing out for
@alexbhathal
! Heard that people locked up on Christmas Island were hoping Alex will win because “Alex & the
@Greens
are the only people who care”. A powerful reminder that what happens in our politics matters. Here’s hoping Alex joins
@AdamBandt
after tonight!
Peter Killin wants to keep people like me out of Parliament, because of my sexuality. I want to keep people like Peter Killin out of Parliament, because people like him seek public office to spread hate about people like me.

Every time I see a photo of something that happened in 2019 I feel a pang of sadness. We didn’t know how much the world was about to change. And now I’m letting myself start to grapple with the fact that it’s changed forever, we’re not going back
If you’ve experienced a form of otherness, I hope it helps you to approach trans & gender diverse people with love and empathy, not fear.
A big reason I joined the Greens was for their championing of equality and justice for all of us. I know we can continue to be this party.
Tonight at
@MerribekCouncil
we’ve just voted to install protected bike lanes on De Carle St in Brunswick/Coburg! This is great news as it reaffirms Council’s previous decision for protected bike lanes in June 2021 🚴♀️
I’d hesitated saying boyfriend, I think I first said partner, but when I saw her smiling I thought I’d give it a shot. She was just laughing about our experience of being close to Italian men and their love for pasta. It was really sweet 🥰
