Here's a little trick I've been using to render the ocean in A Short Hike! The water is just a plane that follows the player around. The texture and vertex animations are all done in world space!

My pumpkin carving sim is back online for 2023! Yeah, I'm reusing the trailer from last year, but there is some new stuff to check out!

I built a custom tool for creating rivers and waterfalls in
#ashorthike
! It sets up the mesh, UVs, colliders, and you even can paint the vertices to trigger shader effects! It took some time to make but it made adding rivers to my game waaay more fun 🌊🌊🌊

So, A Short Hike is out on PlayStation and Xbox today!
It's been about 2 years since the game came out on PC, and I still can't believe the response it's gotten. I feel so incredibly lucky and grateful I get to keep working on games.
A Short Hike comes out tomorrow as part of Humble Monthly! As a kid, I always enjoyed exploring forests and climbing up hills just to run down them again... I wanted to see if I could try and capture some of those feelings in my game!

I just released a patch for A Short Hike that adds extensive controller remapping options. This should help you get any controller working well with the game... Including this classic controller! 🎮

I also make the edges of the mesh less dense than the center - since the player won't be focusing on the edges it's ok to make the water lower quality.

One of the things I made for this was the map! I LOVE it when things come with a map, so I had to include one for this. I made it directly in Unity (I don't really know how to use design software😅) and used a custom topological shader to render it!

I released an update for A Short Hike today! It adds a few frequently asked features, including localization support (French and Spanish translations!), autosaving, save slots, and a bunch of bugfixes.

The water turns to a solid foamy colour when it touches the shore. This is done by comparing the distance between the transparent water pixel to the terrain behind it using the depth buffer. I learned how to do this by following this tutorial:
Since I released ~Ghost Town Pumpkin Festival~ at the beginning of this month, I've been rewriting the cutting algorithm from scratch to try and make it less error-prone!
To help debug it, I rewrote it as a coroutine that can visualize the steps. This helped a lot! 🎃
