until now.
We have at least 475 ACL injuries since January 2022, at least 134 in 2024.

Usually I just share the facts about an injury and when I have an opinion about it I try to keep it to myself, because the goal of this project is to raise awareness, not to rant about every injury.

This one feels like it should have been avoided. So for once, a small rant:

As you may already know, the DFB 🇩🇪 confirmed that Lena Oberdorf (22) suffered an ACL and an MCL injury during the last UWNL game against Austria.
She will miss the Olympics and at least part of the Bayern season.

For people interested in boots: Jill Roord was wearing brand new Nike Phantom Luna II, the newest version of the Luna, Nike's boots supposedly designed for women (also worn by men 🤷).
This would make her the first player to injure her ACL with the Luna boots as far as I'm aware

Always sad when you see a player being let go while injured.
But this is a new level.
& it probably won't have a good impact on the other players in that team.

In my opinion, Germany being already qualified should NOT have played their usual starting XI.
Especially against Austria who could still qualify and had to be competitive.
They should have done like France, playing the "B team" and subbing players at the first sign of injury.

Yes, it IS a FIFA international window. But it should have been used for friendlies, not competitive games.
This is also what we talk about when we say that there is a huge schedule issue. Not just the number of games played (even if it's also an issue for some players).

To be clear: no boots are going to miraculously stop all the ACL injuries.
Nike's communication about the Phantom Luna was that it was "designed for women" and supposed to prevent injuries. Hence the interest by some.
Now Nike merged both Phantom boots so it raises questions.
For people interested in boots: Jill Roord was wearing brand new Nike Phantom Luna II, the newest version of the Luna, Nike's boots supposedly designed for women (also worn by men 🤷).

The top 4 of the 2022 Ballon d'Or nominees sustained an ACL injury in the last 2 years.
In order.
It's probably a random coincidence, but it's still kinda scary to see.
Out of the 20 nominees that year, 7 sustained an ACL injury now (it was 5 a year ago). 6 out of 14 "The Best".

It's a scheduling issue, and not just with the NT games, even though the 2023/2024 season has seen at least one ACL injury during EVERY international window (5 in the UWNL between 4 windows).
Players need rest between games and between travel and training. Both men and women.

Regarding Lena Oberdorf, the fact that Wolfsburg failed to qualify for the UWCL should have helped her get some rest.
If we look at FIFPRO's data, she did play less games this season.
BUT at the same time she had her second highest season in the "critical zone" (< 5 days of rest)

By playing Lena Oberdorf in a meaningless (for Germany) "competitive" (for Austria) game, Germany lost one of their most important players, for the Olympics and at least until next year.
Bayern lost their star recruit and a second player to an ACL injury in 2 months.

2 of them happened earlier in the month but it's still way too much.
That's 13 ACL injuries in February alone. +15 in January.
Almost 30 players sustaining an ACL injury in 2024 already.

Right now, I have listed 134 D1 players confirmed ACL injuries. I also have a separate list with unspecified knee injuries since they could be ACL injuries but some teams/leagues don’t give much more info than “Knee injury”.

The issue with the schedule is not just "it's too busy". The issue is that it's poorly thought out.
You can't have 3 competitive games in 10 days then 2 games in a month, (almost) nothing then 3 big games in 10 days again and expect players to be as fit for every fixture.

Sorry to add to ACL chat, but, Man City had almost a month off and have only played 3 games since returning (two of those 4 goal wins).
"The schedule is too busy" is lazy and blaming something that won't change is going to make clubs accept it as unavoidable instead of changing.

It can be linked to her ACL injury if it's something like overcompensation, or it can be something that has nothing to do with it.

Bianca Sierra injured her ACL in November 2022. Like Amel Majri and more recently Stine Larsen, she took advantage of her injury to get pregnant.

Especially now that most of these players are playing longer and longer seasons.
10 years ago most of them were fresher because they played less games/minutes during the year.
All these teams in the knockout stages look exhausted. The IOC needs to revisit playing every three days. Putting players in a dangerous position, with very little opportunity to recover properly with travel between games.

The issue is scheduling in general, not just the high number of games (even if it IS an issue for a lot of NT players too).
The contrast in March calendars is a good depiction of why the ACL conversation needs to be more than just "there's too many games"

Sometimes you need to wait a few days to be able to have an MRI scan because of the swelling etc, that's probably why we already have Pawollek's diagnosis and not hers.

Last November, she came back from another ACL injury, sustained in October 2022.

What I do know is that there's a huge demand for WOSO in Australia post-WC. That Canberra United is a historic club. With historic players. This should not happen.
