SP* Episode 29: CRITICAL POSITIVITY – with ACL [podcast]
A special extra-length episode celebrating ACL, featuring interviews with ten of our contributors
Songtradr, not cool. Officially burned any potential good will from the entire Bandcamp user community. Epic managed to keep hands off, any changes were improvements. But two weeks in ST already stripping the site for parts
Have to say while I certainly have used Discogs to buy (and occasionally sell) it’s value is less as a market place and more as a user generated database.
ACL turned 11 a couple months ago. I'm finally finishing up an anniversary post/podcast interviewing our staff. Please send well wishes /praise / accolades / memories / hate mail / etc for potential inclusion. in our self-celebration. Thank you.
Mutek began last night, gotta say that was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a venue. Just straight out a VC nightmare, completed with an NFT room, a forced surprised $4 bag check, and way overpriced drinks. Not the Montreal vibes at all.
I mean I guess Epic is to blame here too. It’s a shame we can’t build anything without needing investors and putting it in a situation to be exploited and sold and mined for value. Centralized culture is a mistake.
The only time that I saw Stars of the Lid was on my birthday in 2008, when they played in a church as part of Wordless Music in NY. I volunteered in order to see the show, was an incredible experience. Still don't have the words. RIP Brian McBride.
New Age’s gonna be the next big trend eh. Hipsters gonna be digging up, not even obscure stuff, not even Vangelis, I’m telling you Yanni and Enya are about to be having a moment.
Digital music is so weird. I just realized that the copy of Kid A in my library was missing a track, which means I probably haven't heard the eponymous track for twenty years
So sad to hear of the closing of Mills College. Sad, but also infuriating, that in a place like the Bay Area with so many billionaires an institution like this can’t be saved.
I spent 2018-19 based on Napoli, and Phill and Katherine did a film screening at an apartment shortly after my arrival. I saw him perform at Unsound later that fall. He had such a long career and mentored so many, but he kept such a busy schedule right up the end. RIP
Also Fly or Die and Irreversable Entanglements. And quite a few records coming in October and November you won’t want to miss…. new Patrick Shiroishi, new Matmos…
@HE_VALENCIA
I don’t trust audiophiles. Use broken shit from Salvation Army. Record to cassette. Export to mp3s. Who cares? Plenty of dudes (always dudes) with expensive shit with little to show for it.
In our last newsletter I mentioned that the latest issue of
@thewiremagazine
