The FCT Police Command has arrested one Onu Simeon following a fatal altercation that led to the de@th of one Ifeanyi Chukwu at Utako Market, Abuja, today February 5. A statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, says at about 09:30 am today, the Command received a distress call regarding a fight in Utako Market. She said police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, where Ifeanyi Chukwu was found lying unconscious on the ground. He was immediately rushed to NNPC Hospital, Utako, by police operatives, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead. ‘’Preliminary investigations revealed that Onu Simeon of Anguwan Biggy, Jabi Daki Biyu, and one Ifeanyi Chukwu of Kuchigoro, Lugbe, had earlier engaged in a dispute over a space to display their goods for sale. The disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Ifeanyi Chukwu suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness. His remains have been deposited at a general hospital for further investigation, while the suspect, Onu Simeon, is currently in police custody as investigations continue. Further updates will be communicated in due course.’’ Adeh said the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Olatunji Disu, urges residents to adopt peaceful means of resolving disputes, emphasizing that violence often leads to tragic and unpredictable consequences. He reassures the public of the Command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order across the FCT. She added that residents are encouraged to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities or security concerns via the FCT Police Command emergency lines: 08032003913, 08028940883, 07057337653. The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has criticized Nigerians for condemning corruption while supporting corrupt leaders during prosecution. He stressed that true development can only happen if citizens unite against corruption. Speaking in Abuja during a visit by officials of the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC), led by Chris Olukolade, Olukoyede emphasized the need for collaboration. He noted that public support is crucial to the EFCC’s success and pledged to partner with stakeholders to raise awareness about integrity and the agency’s activities. “When we prosecute high-profile cases, the same people protesting against corruption turn around to defend corrupt leaders. This contradicts the fight against corruption,” he said. He highlighted that tackling corruption requires a collective effort involving society, policy reforms, and improved citizen welfare. He also outlined his leadership approach, prioritizing prevention over enforcement. Olukoyede introduced the Fraud Risk Assessment and Control (FRAC) directorate to block financial leakages and ensure funds are used for their intended purposes. The EFCC now monitors government payments through the GIFMIS platform to track expenditures and verify capital projects. “Prevention is key. If we stop corruption before it happens, enforcement becomes easier and less costly. However, we are also scaling up enforcement to ensure accountability,” he added. #AbujaTwitterCommunity #EFCC #AbujaGist
