“Beirut, the late poet Nadia Tuéni memorably wrote, has been “a thousand times dead and a thousand times reborn.” A beautifully written essay by @jabirached_

“We have become subjects in a morbid experiment. New weapons are being perfected on lives deemed expendable, with the approval of the West.” New from @jabirached_ on the view from besieged Beirut:

A very insightful essay urging international donors to complement conditionality-based lending with direct societal support. To quote it, “not helping the population now will wound the country so much, prospects for future recovery will grow ever more distant”. #Lebanon

With @ishacdiwan we propose a “Protecting Basic Services Program” - supported by the international community - that would seek to prevent the current wounds from leading to terminal cancer - yet designed in ways that do not “get the government off the hook”.

The contour of #Lebanon debates has become alarmingly base legitimizing sectarian, racist and homophobic narratives. Meanwhile, the country loses whatever sovereignty it still has while vested interests push the burden onto those least able to absorb it. Shameful.

Lebanon's economic paralysis mirrors its politics. Remittances, charity, and some FX reserves sustain the economy. No more collapse but, equally, no recovery. Unlocking growth requires a political solution. Sadly, today's Parliamentary charade suggests no end in sight. #Lebanon

@maziarmin Is it? I actually found the whole first section—where he questions the assumptions underlying the neo-liberal policies of the 1990s—quite compelling. To be discussed over an overdue drink!!

Remarkable speech by Jake Sullivan (Biden’s national security advisor). A frank and unapologetic repudiation of the neo-liberal (economic and foreign) policies that were at the core of past Democratic US administrations.

Quote is about Sudan. But applies to #Lebanon (past and present). “Conflict resolution focused on signing peace agreements that split power between armed groups—no matter how many provisions on political reforms are added—rarely leads to sustainable peace”

@karimbitar The shocking part of this tweet is that Jim Jarmusch turned 70. To me, he is (“was”, I guess) the essence of a young and idealistic New Yorker of a certain era.

A story from Pelé’s autobiography (via the NYT obituary). “In 1960, the team’s plane stopped in Beirut, where a crowd gathered threatening to kidnap Pelé unless Santos agreed to play a Lebanese team”. Probably an exaggeration…but not out of character 😀 #Lebanon

@ghandour_ag Admitted, politeness misplaced. Criminality perhaps a better term. That aside, the scale of what they’re doing is insane: first engineer an unprecedented recession and then create hyperinflation.
