“I think here I will leave you. It has come to seem
there is no perfect ending.
Indeed, there are infinite endings.
Or perhaps, once one begins,
there are only endings.”
― Louise Glück, Faithful and Virtuous Night
I'm glad Maharashtra is NOT a BJP ruled state, because those states are going to see a crisis of unimaginable proportions
Criticize Uddhav all you want, he's doing a better job than other CMs, all this while keeping the circling BJP vultures of the carcass
Dad's needing a lot of blood, it's been tough as there is a shortage. We need emergency blood donors.
Lining up O+ donors who can donate at Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Erandawane, Pune tomorrow and day after tomorrow (28 & 29 October)

My dad is now off all life support except oxygen. He is on his way to a slow recovery.
I'm relieved. To see him sit up after twelve days of teetering on the edge.
For all the prayers and wishes, thank you. We are immensely grateful.

Indian wolf; grassland surrounding Pune
they are the best indicator species.
if there are wolves, you know the grassland is healthy.
it's amazing that they survive with huge human pressures
I rarely talk about that part of my life... It makes me uncomfortable to think back to what I was then.
It's difficult to explain.
But I'm gonna try in this thread.

Meet the lone glossy ibis still hanging around in the heat... lots of frogs and crabs around though, and fish floundering in the shallow pools and marshes
The monsoon is arriving... The Jacobin cuckoo is singing it's brain fever song
This bird is well known in Indian cultures, in Maharashtra, it's called 'chaatak'. A harbinger of rain.
What an amazing image of a leopard roaming the grasslands to the south-east of

Our leopards are alive and well, and despite the conflict they're making a stand.

Spending time encouraging kids to play in the mud and puddles, to catch fish, crabs, bugs. Teaching them it's not 'dirty'.
A love for nature must be inculcated, urban kids are growing up disconnected from the land and seasons. It should be an essential element of childhood.
Open calls for genocide of India’s Muslims by Hindu clergy in the capital. No prizes for guessing that there would be no arrests. Guess who infiltrated the Akharas in the 80’s with money & muscle power ? The world’s oldest fascist organization masquerading as an “NGO”.
If you live in Pune or Mumbai be aware that the Amur falcons are taking a break on the west coast and refueling before flying non-stop to Southern Africa
Mumbai-Goa highway is a fucking joke. It's a national highway. And is catered like the surface of the moon. Vehicular traffic is moving at 10 kmph.
As for the state highways, they're no better. In all these Gadkari years, where is the improvement?
If you live in peninsular India, and ever come across this centipede. Stay away and do not handle it. It has a venomous bite that'll leave you in pain for days.
Scolopendra sp.
Go to Satara. Ask where the windmills are. Head there when the heat is at its hellish best. And being out under the sun feels like an oven on high broil.
Deal with the discomfort. To see the Fan-throated lizard. Sitana ponticeriana
The Amur falcons from north-east India are flying through Pune district, many will stay a few days to refuel, before heading to the coast. Then making a transoceanic flight to South Africa, where they winter during our summer.
A round trip of 22,000 kilometres!
The Konkan coast is seeing these bioluminescent tides... Swimming in the bioluminescent waves remains one of my most amazing and treasured nature experiences
The ancestral home in the Konkan was built using environmentally friendly materials, and has stood for more than hundred years.
The present generation wants to demolish it and build a modern house. 🤷♂️
'Vartaki tapkiricha kaarkhaana'
Likely Pune's oldest extant running commercial shop, established 1668
Makes snuff from Tobacco. Didn't even know there were still snuff users around.
My tweet about hate brewing in Marathi brahmin households seem to have caused some angst.
The truth unfortunately can be bitter. But I will stand by it.
Bullock cart services between Pune and Panvel advertised in early 18th century.
Before the time of bridges, people took a boat from Panvel into the Bombay of the time.

Wife has woken early to make 'sandana'(Marathi), a steamed rice cake flavored with jackfruit. It's eaten with coconut milk with jaggery added. Only the 'barka' (variety of jackfruit can be used. Very time consuming. Part of the Kokani heritage preserved.
Pics later.
Did you know there are at least two species of jackfruit? One commonly sold in markets with smooth dry flesh. It can be cut and is called 'kaaapa'
In the Konkan we have another species, it's called 'barka', it has to be broken apart, and is has a custard like snotty flesh
Bioluminescent blooms along parts of west coast, this is near Udupi, KA... Expect the same in parts of Goa and Maharashtra... Damn. I should be back in the village.
I'm seeing people tweet about tomato prices hitting 100+rs per kilogram
just thinking back four months, farmers were getting less than ONE RUPEE PER KG and dumped tons of tomatoes because it wasn't even worth it to spend labour hours picking & transport them to the market
In India it's kinda amazing how even 'love marriages' are caste bound.
This is the perpetuation of the caste system. As one of my friends put it, "how come brahmins fall in love only with brahmins?"
🤣
