At Abcam, we take pride in building teams that collaborate effectively, designing environments that help people perform at their best. A key part of this is listening to our employees to create spaces that work for them, alongside areas that foster collaborative, in-person connections 🙌 Hannah Tweddle, Manufacturing Data Lead, experiences these benefits first-hand: “When I see how much people enjoy working together, I know this place is for me.” If this sounds like the kind of work environment you’d thrive in, we’d love to hear from you. Among other discoveries, American microbiologist Esther Lederberg revolutionized the field of microbial genetics by discovering the lambda phage in the early 1950s – a bacterial virus that became a widely used tool for studying genetic recombination and gene regulation. Her work paved the way for medical and biotechnology breakthroughs and advanced our understanding of genetic variation and evolution. Lederberg's innovative methods continue to shape the field of life sciences today. At Abcam, we believe that breakthroughs made by one of us empower us all. #progresshappenstogether

This week on #BehindtheBreakthroughs, we’re going back to our bread and butter: the antibody. The antibody’s Y-shaped structure was discovered by Rodney Porter and Gerald Edelman in the late 50s and early 60s, providing fundamental insight into the body's immune response. Their theory revolutionized our understanding of how the immune system generates a range of antibodies to combat different diseases, leading to advancements in immunology, vaccine development, and antibody-based therapies, saving many lives. #Progresshappenstogethern

Set your week up for success with one of our top pathways. The tumor microenvironment (TME) consists of various support cells subverted by the cancer cells to assist in the progression of the tumor. Here we review the complex interplay of the tumor, stromal cells, and immune cells within the TME. Download your copy of our tumor microenvironment pathway:

Barbara McClintock's observation that no two maize plants were alike led her to investigate, and later challenge, the prevailing genetic theory of the 1930s and 40s. Throughout her career in cytogenetics, Barbara made discovery after discovery. Today, much of our understanding of genetics, medicine, and evolutionary biology is based on her findings. At Abcam, we believe that breakthroughs made by one of us empower us all. #progresshappenstogether

What gets you into the lab on a Monday morning? For Joe, it's to answer a fundamental question: what makes us human? Or in his words: “Trying to understand what makes you you, and what makes me me.” In our award nominated short film series ‘Love Letters to Science’, Joe tells us how he chose biology class at school when philosophy wasn’t giving him adequate answers. In this first class, he learned something that meant he would never turn back from science. Find out what it was in episode 3 of the series here:
