@InnaVishik Regarding (2): due to this expectation, when a younger scientist turns out to be more capable than them, they do NOT like it at all 😆

@matloff This is a standard homework problem. It should definitely be LLM-able, the LLMs were probably just not prompted appropriately...

@matloff @andrewgwils Doing curiosity-driven research is a great way to end an academic career these days, especially if not tenured 😞

@InnaVishik Does this mean that the amount the PI gets for research stays the same but the amount handed out by the agency decreases to cut costs? i.e. $1 going to $0.625 (research) + $0.375 (overhead) is now $0.71875 going to $0.625 (research) + $0.09375 (overhead)

@matloff @EricRWeinstein It's part of the greater problem of institutions not incentivizing "non-LLM-able" talent like they used to decades ago.

@matloff @MangalShirke @theskindoctor13 Because it's a socialist country that hands out money to people instead of investing it to build things.

RT @AdamRackis: O(N^2) algorithms absolutely can, and many times will be faster than a “faster” O(logN) algorithm for small input sizes.

@matloff @tanayj @JeremyLNeufeld @WSJ Such workers will just stay in academia longer in order to build up a CV that qualifies them for industry employment under an O-1. Academia will love it. They anyway do this even today because of the unreliable lottery, which restricts them more than a wage ranking system would.

@matloff The National Interest Waiver (EB2-NIW) was liberalized under Biden, and its usage increased greatly as the long PERM processing times (as well as indenture while on the path to employer sponsorship) could be avoided.

@matloff @AnnaGorisch The issues with the program (on both sides of the debate) can be largely fixed by replacing the lottery with an auction. Surprised that not many have brought this up over the last few days.
