For a moment, Kaveh simply stares—and after a few seconds, the implication of what Alhaitham is asking finally sinks in. Kaveh’s face heats up. “Y–you!! You want a kiss for your birthday??”

“When I was a kid, my grandmother would wish me a happy birthday and kiss my cheek.” “That’s sweet…” Kaveh says slowly, still not getting where the conversation is going. “And…?” Alhaitham levels him with a look. “You asked what I wanted for my birthday.”

At that, Alhaitham tilts his head in thought. There’s that look on his face—the one that pulls at the corner of his lips when he’s about to be a menace. Then, Alhaitham taps his own cheek twice with a finger. “What?” Kaveh frowns, confused.

Kaveh is about to complain, but decides to just shift the topic entirely. “Your birthday is in a few days. Is there anything you want?” Alhaitham raises an eyebrow at him, then shakes his head. “Nothing in particular.” “Nothing at all?”

Especially looking at Alhaitham now, Kaveh can’t believe this is the same guy he’d accused of being the most selfish person he’d ever had the displeasure of knowing— Alhaitham thumps his head gently with a book. “Whatever it is you’re thinking, stop it.”

Another silence settles between them, though this time, it feels more awkward—at least to Kaveh. Maybe it’s that lingering guilt again, a remnant of their big fight years ago. It still persists in his chest, even though they’ve mended their friendship since.

“I can hear you thinking,” Alhaitham says, breaking his train of thought. “I’d wager you’re overanalyzing a nonexistent issue.” Kaveh scoffs. “What, are you a mind reader now too?” “No, that would be Nahida.” “Right.”
