🎉 Exciting News! 🎉
I’m thrilled to announce that I will join
@UWaterloo
as an Assistant Professor in Management Science and Engineering starting January 2025!
My lab will focus on studying the Future of Work, collaborative platforms, and supporting teamwork.
So excited to be in Hamburg for
#CHI2023
!
@paula_aoy
and I will be presenting our work investigating how GPT generated explanations influence human subjective decision making, supervised by
@AnaKuzminykh
. Come check out our poster Wednesday at 10:30!
💡 New on our site: In a special event hosted by SRI,
@mounialalmas
of
@SpotifyResearch
shared insights on how to design successful recommender systems to deliver personalized user experiences.

last summer. We studied how employees used meeting-free weeks and found that there are generally three groups of people
I am so excited to share that my first publication is now live online! We used Slack data from student design teams and NLP methods to model convergence and divergence throughout the product design process. Available here:

Does your team use Slack to collaborate? We have designed a Slack application that measures a team’s levels of shared understanding from their public channel Slack communication, and we are looking for teams to download and use the application, and participate in interviews
Congratulations to
@uoftmie
PhD student
@_sharonferguson
for being awarded an Ethics of AI Graduate Research Fellowship from
@UofTEthics
! Sharon’s work will build on our lab’s past findings on the gendered persistence of engineering students in the field of AI and ML. 👩💻🎉
From a very proud advisor: results out for the NSERC fellowships, and doctoral students
@_sharonferguson
and
@meaganflus
both won the
@NSERC_CRSNG
CGS-D to support their work; plus Liz won the CGS-M for her MASc studies! 👩💻👩🏫👩🔧Congratulations! 🥳
In this work, we studied the Slack communication of one design team with high levels of Psychological Safety, and one design team with lower levels. We found that some elements of Slack use, such as replies, reactions, and mentions might be promising signals
However, we found that meetings, as frustrating as they might be, serve an important purpose: to capture the attention of those on your team. Without scheduled meetings, most people found it challenging to negotiate attention with remote teammates.

Each member of your team will have the opportunity to opt-in or opt-out, and this study was approved by the University of Toronto Research Ethics Board. Please fill out the following form if you would like to learn more Thank you! 🙏
We interviewed 20 product design engineers at the beginning of the COVID-19 imposed work-from-home period and organize their challenges and strategies by Intangible Design, Tangible Design, and Communication and Project Management activities.
We built a framework of attention negotiation for remote workers which outlines the steps in this process and the factors which affect it. We identified three tensions and three general challenges in this process that prevent effective attention negotiation.
