“Keep going” is not advice for filmmakers. “Write a script that can be filmed in 1 location over a weekend with 2-5 characters. Start small, and use this film as a way to build your portfolio and connect with other filmmakers for bigger projects.” Is advice for filmmakers.

A short film is a film. It’s not a trail run. It’s not a prerequisite for a feature film. It’s not a dwindled down version of a longer film. Short films are films. With a plot, dynamic characters, and a succinct story. A short film is a film.

A huge reason why filmmakers are discouraged and cannot get their films made is because they are writing scripts based off of resources they don’t have. What’s the most incredible thing you can write in one room with two characters? Minimal props. Minimal dialogue. High stakes.

Microbudget filmmaking is how films actually get made. If you write a 7 million dollar script, great! But who is giving you that funding? And when? How? If you write a 1 location x 2 actor film that only requires a skeleton crew…YOU can actually MAKE that film.

I know it's hard, but the world needs your art. Keep making your films. You got this.

Part of being a filmmaker is taking time to absorb. Watch movies and take notes on the shot list. Watch YouTube tutorials on color grading. Go to film festivals and meet other filmmakers. Attend filmmaking workshops. You don’t always have to be creating.

I want to see more micro budget indie filmmakers forming writers rooms of their own.

To the indie filmmakers who are coping with film festival, grant, and fellowship rejections, remember this: Rejection is only possible after showing up. You showed up, you put yourself & your art out there. That was BRAVE. That alone deserves to be celebrated. We ❤️ you.

4) A level up. If you have a camera operator who has never had a chance to DP, let them DP your project. If you have a PA who wants to produce, bump them up to production coordinator. Give folks a chance to earn a credit in the role that they deserve.

Indie directors - make sure your edit feedback is clear and concise. “The vibe in scene 4 is kinda off” 🚫 “In scene 4, the pace is slow. Cut 9:45-10:13 of getting out of the car. You can start the scene with the doorbell ringing. Also can we find faster backgroud music?” ✅

Many filmmakers are at a standstill because they’re trying to make a million dollar film. If you write what you can shoot, you don’t have to ask for permission to create. What’s the most incredible thing you can write happens in one room with 2 characters?
