Tottenham having to bring on a striker to avoid bringing on an 18 year old CM. To replace a winger playing CM. This is what Pochettino has to work with. It's a miracle they're even in this position.

Pep's adjustments to beat Sporting's narrow 5-2-3: 🔵 FBs wide, not inverted 🔵 KDB and Silva on their natural sides as 8s 🔵 Foden occupying nearby players as f9 🔵 Designed to create wide overloads, either to penetrate down the near side or switch and underlap on the far side

Some interesting new rotations in possession in this new 4-diamond-2 but it's impossible to press. Front 3 can't control CBs + double pivot, the 3 behind can't get out to FBs while protecting the middle. Cant be a top team while playing this passively out of possession.

If your pressing structure leaves a gap, Mount will find it. If your pressing structure doesn't, Mount will create one. It's nice that the 2 goals today showed his quality in the final third and progression phase, but he's also been instrumental in deep build-up / 1st phase too.

🇪🇸 3-0 🇭🇷 🇭🇷 had good spells but lost due to their OOP play (+ being weak in the boxes & transition). 4-3-3 vs 4-3-3 can be tricky to match-up in midfield as the oppo's #6 is naturally free initially. But Dalic's plan killed Modric and didn't suit his player profiles. 🧵 1/5

Pochettino proving he's still one of the best in these one-off games. Set up perfectly to exploit the space behind City's midfield, both during their high press and their mid-block press. Palmer is key and James' positioning and timing creates doubt for Gvardiol to follow.

Promising that United can compete like that while being so far from their ceiling tactically. ETH has only markedly improved MU's 2nd phase / structured poss. Still a lot to go w/ build-up + pressing. Rest of the improvement has been non-tactical (mentality, confidence etc).

Brighton have defended with a (genuine) back 3 a lot this season, which is amazing. See below their 3-4-2-1 in a set shape - no one has jumped to press (Mwepu about to), it's just their standard mid-block positions. But Marco Silva had a plan for Fulham to exploit this. 👇

Bielsa with an absolutely textbook destruction of a 4-4-2 defence. 3-3-3-1 with two key tactical advantages: 1) 3v2 on the first line, with wide spacing and CBs that are happy to dribble and step in. Ayling does so, and under no pressure, plays over the top for the first goal.

Werner's a great example of how if you keep making runs in behind as a striker, you can keep your place in the team, even when you're in a bad run finishing-wise. So many offsides today with bad timing, but in the end his willingness to run got them their 92nd min winner.

Spurs perhaps don't have the best profiles to attack Villa's 6-2-2 but the deeper players can definitely take more responsibility in driving with the ball. The ball-far half space is also exposed (Villa winger drops early into DEF line rather than late) so Gil could be key.

My biggest takeaway from Arsenal's improvement is the dynamic between the forwards. Laca-Auba and Ozil-Nelson combinations. When Laca/Ozil drops, Auba/Nelson make the opposite run in behind. Timing, positioning and execution excellent. Just like Silva-Sterling at City.
