Unfortunately, most of us walking around aren’t aware of what to do if we find ourselves in a sinking vehicle. Fear & panic will set in, costing us precious time. Take the time to learn what the steps are & coach you & your loved ones on them.
Here’s what you need to do ⬇️:

Commit it to memory. Purchase the necessary tools & keep them in the vehicle or on your body. Ensure everyone in your family who can understand knows the process. I pray you’re never in this position to use these steps. But it’s better to have it & not need it…you know the rest.

Step 1: REMAIN CALM.
Easier said than done, I know but it can only make your situation worse. You need a clear head & quick actions to take advantage of the short time you have. Vehicles typically float for 30-120 seconds before completely sinking.

Step 2: ROLL DOWN ALL WINDOWS.
This is your exit once the vehicle is submerged. Ideally, you want them down before the waterline reaches the height of the windows. The pressure may prevent the windows from rolling down after it reaches.

If you cannot roll them down entirely, break them. Side windows, not the windshield. I carry a tactical pen everyday. It has a tip designed to break glass. Or get a specific glass breaker tool. Your headrest can work as well (tongs on bottom).

Step 3: TAKE OFF YOUR SEATBELT.
You don’t want to be restrained in a sinking vehicle. Remove your seatbelt quickly & the seatbelts of those in the vehicle with you. If you cannot, cut the seatbelt. Again, another reason to carry a pocket knife or tool daily.

This means your survival & escape are based on your actions within the first two minutes of the accident.

What you SHOULD NOT do:
Don’t open the doors as a first move. That allows more water in quickly. Plus the pressure of the water will make it more difficult & you’re going to waste time & energy.

Don’t wait for the car to fill. Some say to wait so that the pressure inside & out equalizes to open the door easily. But that takes a few minutes. It’s not immediate. How long can you hold your breath?

Step 4: CLIMB THROUGH THE WINDOW.
Climb out the window, ideally when the waterline is still below the car window. That’s when it’s the easiest. If it’s past the window, it’ll be more difficult due to the water coming in but still possible.
