Still blows my mind that 50ish Spanish dudes made landfall in south america and f*cked the continent so hard that it's still speaking Spanish. And then the nation just dropped off the map. Like the Mongols, rose to immense heights at incredible speed, then retired.

Middle Earth is a world in decline, and few places better exemplify this than Moria. I didn't notice it reading the books as a young boy, but rereading them now it is staggering just how immense the Dwarrowdelf was, & how primitive the peoples of the 3rd age seem in comparison.

I really love Porco Rosso. A love letter to a West that could have been, it is almost naive in its frank and un-self-conscious love of that era's culture, in a way that the West itself, with its poisonous lack of self-confidence, refuses to be.

Part of the appeal of the Lord of the Rings is largely unspoken, it is aesthetic, it is the feeling of being men striving towards great goals among the ruins of greater times. Why would that appeal to us? Perhaps because it is a romantic vision of where we are now.
