The difference is Remarque was a conscript and JΓΌnger was a volunteer. A lot of famous β€˜anti war’ literature was written by conscripts. The simple lesson is if you find yourself desperately needing conscripts, rethink your war footing, because they will poison you eventually.

I always chuckle a bit at how some Comanches observed with horror that white troops that were tasked with subduing the plains were willing to sustain casualties in battle so long as it seemed victory was getting closer, whereas the Comanches would flee if sustaining a few losses.

Ernst JΓΌnger killed quite a few people in WWI, but he never mocked their corpses or felt the need to go "HAHA YOU'RE DEAD". In fact, he often remarked on how fit or neat his dead foes were. It contrasts oddly with treatment of death in recent wars by armchair fighters.

Wool is the best material for cold weather and easily beats synthetics. Apart from creating insulation using literal bits of shredded plastic, synthetics actually conduct heat off of the body whereas wool does not. Wool also does not take on odor from sweat quickly.
