🌟New article out🌟
I provide a transformative approach to peace studies, centered on the agency of the Global South. I argue that challenging Eurocentric narratives of violence and peace can move us toward true liberation!
#DecolonialPeace
#GlobalSouth
I have spent the past 3 days in the European Parliament for the
#BeyondGrowth2023
conference. Here are some of my main takeaways (as a Global South, feminist, decolonial, ecosocialist, social scientist).
Practicing citational justice is extremely important in times where even feminist and decolonial scholars are doing so much to uphold empire.
I want to also recommend citing Lelia Gonzalez for ~intersectionality~, and Sueli Carneiro and Moira Millan for epistemicide.
Cite Combahee River Collective for anti-imperial, anti-racist intersectionality analysis. Cite other scholars like Audre Lorde, Patricia Hill Collins, Chandra Mohanty & other anti-capitalist, anti-imperial feminists. Not those who uphold imperial feminism or liberal feminism
I was just attacked at my voting station by a man twice my size - with his wife and baby daughter - calling me a criminal and a communist. I had to scream for the cops because he started following me - the cops did not move
#Brazilelections
Yes, I see this all the time now. Decolonisation is a smart career move for Global North scholars. For Global South scholar-activists committed to the theory AND praxis of decolonisation, there are strong impediments and challenges that undermine of our "scientific" capacity.
Lund University has allowed police brutality against our own students, several were wounded by the police today. We demand the release of the students and that the university act on their demands.
✊🏽 Finally, we cannot talk about degrowth without talking about the need to decolonize the current power and economic structures, as well as to democratize institutions of decision-making. There is no degrowth without decolonization, there is no just transition without the people
While the interventions by our fellow scientists were great, we need more representation of social scientists to help us think through questions of decolonization, power balances, class struggle, public mobilization, and social consequences and impacts
#BeyondGrowth2023
We also need to unite env. and workers! Our big task is to create the "movement of movements" where everyone is welcome and understand that we all have a role to play. Building bridges with workers and Indigenous/traditional communities is key for a powerful and just transition
I understand that it was a very powerfully simbolic experience to be talking about degrowth and postgrowth within the walls of Eurocentric power guided by the mantra of growth. But contrary to my fellow European colleagues, that building represents a lot harm and violence to me.
Brazil is burning again. Even more than last year. It is known now that there are five big agribusiness owners connected to the criminal fires destroying indigenous and protected land. Land grabbing is targeted and violent, as it has always been in this country.
The
#BeyondGrowth2023
shows that people are frustrated by the lack of response of politicians - especially ones that deviate so much from the evidence and recs of the scientists. Several of them were booed, while scientists got standing ovations for their courage to speak out.
New paper out! ✨🌿 With

I guess it is true that you if you stay in Academia long enough you watch yourself become a villain... I teach my first Statistics class this week and I fear I have become the thing I feared the most during my bachelor's program... 😂
the new conservative government in Sweden has decided to stop funding all research in the field of "development" and cancelled an ongoing review process. this is a reflection of larger trends of dismantling aid funds. it is becoming harder to be a serious researcher in Sweden.
Happy to see my article "Underdevelopment, extractivism, and conflict in the Global South and the role of systemic alternatives" published in

special issue on Women Thinking the Global South. It's open access!

Europe wants to be the leader of the Green Transition with minerals coming from the Global South. Green extractivism for green futures is just the new color of colonialism and capitalism.

feels hard to share academic news at this time, but this paper speaks to the frustration felt in peace studies as being disconnected from praxis and the real world. together with
@cjnicoson
and Alva we try to reimagine peace education that is oriented towards real transformation
Why do we study peace? And for what? New paper on critical pedagogies published in International Studies Perspectives (

thank you for this thread! you express a lot of what I have been feeling lately: an uneasy about my place in this institution and an extreme desire to just be home
Malmö ready for Eurovision.
The city admin has ordered the "cleaning" of the graffiti on >the graffiti wall< that has always been a monument of resistance in my neighborhood.
We won't ignore, we won't forget. Free Palestine. Boycott Eurovision.
Today is International Day for Food Sovereignty and against Transnational Corporations. We celebrate peasant communities all over the world fighting to feed the world with healthy food, while protecting their territories. Small farmers feed the world, not monoculture! 🌽🌱🪱⭐️🌈
my amazing colleague and friend

i am so proud of the great feminist peace scholar that she is and to have followed this journey!
Today, me and
@cjnicoson
start teaching the new course we designed for the P&C bachelor's program
@pol_LU
We will read Paulo Freire, Angela Davis, Frantz Fanon, Nancy Fraser, Audre Lorde and more to understand questions of violence, justice and peace in the 21st century.
Students in Sweden have launched university encampments todqy! I am so proud of everyone at Lund Uni doing this! If you are around Lundagård, come suppport them!
I've peaked too early in life. Work this week is about reading/writing in the sun, listening to great seminar with
@SouthFeministas
on decolonial feminism while replanting my wild strawberries, and now getting a cargo bike just to take the dogs to the beach... this is the life!
Hot off the press! I had the great pleasure of contributing with a chapter to the Handbook of Security and the Environment which just came out today. My analysis is phase-based on how the environment and climate change can affect peace before, during and after peace negotiations.
got my physical copy of the Handbook of Degrowth edited by

great to see this in print, and see our work together with so many important and interesting discussions! if you have institutional support, consider asking your library to purchase the book!
just gave my first interview as an expert on degrowth strategies for peace in the Global South to a student from NYC. academic life is full of highs and lows, and I am sure going to ride this high wave for as long as it gives me serotonin 🌿✊🥳
In 3 weeks since getting a puppy, more people have casually started conversations with me on the streets than in the almost 7 years of living in Sweden. I should've gotten a dog earlier. 🐶🇸🇪
This week I start my research stay at

the everydayness of our lives is meant to make it difficult for us to care about the horrors going on in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, in the Amazon... if you care, please speak up. don't let the machinations of everyday capitalism corrupt our souls.
the more I research and the more I learn, the more confident I become that my role as a decolonial and feminist scholar is to create chaos wherever I go
More horrible news coming from Lund. The police has fabricated the charge that the woman they arrested was sitting in front of the police car and preventing it from moving. They arrested her for police sabotage and even tried to charge her for drug crimes.
Här är ett längre filmklipp som helt motbevisar polisens version om att kvinnan som greps för Blåljussabotage skulle ha suttit sig framför och blockerat en polisbuss. Anklagelserna fabricerade. Hon stod framför polisbussen i cirka en sekund. Jämför med mitt klipp till höger.
So proud of the students for putting the PRAXIS magazine together and for the lovely launch party. Thanks everyone for coming and learning with our co-editors, and the department
@pol_LU
for making this possible!
Regarding Lund University's shameful and coward actions today:"the decision made and the actions taken would suggest that the smooth running of an academic procession and the optics of the promotion ceremony tale precedence over our students' wellbeing. That is simply scandalous"
@Tilley101
this makes my blood boil so much! scholars that are really committed are reprehended constantly, while these people get famous. and then all we get from them is silence. academia is indefensible.
From my talk today with
@SRNordic
climate change is the product of political choices that have kept capitalism, extractivism, growth in place. We need radical political change to negate structures of violence and build societies of peace instead 🌱✨
“Violence and climate change are driven by the same root causes”

after a couple weeks struggling to work on my PhD thesis, I had a very heart-warming and lovely conversation with my main supervisor. She was so encouraging!! I cannot stress enough how grateful I am to have someone that cares about me as a person more than just as a researcher.

just finishing the first part of my fieldwork in Brasília 🇧🇷 following the the struggle of the agroecological communities of Bem Viver 🌻✊🏼💦 i have learned so much about their hope, their strength, and their dreams of transforming the world through our relationship to nature
Critics: "this idea of Global South - as if all peripheric and underdeveloped societies were connected culturally in a certain way - makes no sense, it is absurd..."
Reality: Moroccan boy dancing to Brazilian music
The Global South is beautiful!
My talk with
@ScientistRebel1
on how to build sustainable and peaceful societies is now online! Thanks to everyone organizing the event, and all who listened and engaged with the discussion! Looking forward to continuing the conversation!
The landless workers' movement in Brazil is donating 2 tons of food for the Palestinian people, specially the ones in Gaza. The food is being brought by the Brazilian Air Force. This is true international solidarity for land, bread, and peace!

defended her thesis about resistance to mining in the North of Sweden as "killjoy desires" that are attracted to different norms and relationships to land beyond extractivism. Find her work below:
In Nacka, rich region of Stockholm. Campaign from Swedish Mining Industry: "No mining, no electric cars" legitimizing mining in the north of Sweden - indigenous land - in the name of sustainability and progress... i've heard this before...
To kick-off my stay at my alma mater PUC Minas, I will hold seminars tomorrow on "Theory and praxis to learn, teach, and practice peace" Feels extremely heavy to be talking about peace and hope after the emotional hangover from election results yesterday, but also so important!
This garden is the best thing in my life. Just got a reject on a paper and i am not taking out all my frustration on the weeds around my wild strawberries instead of crying. Highly recommend!
Remember that it is not enough to fight the manifestations of violence, it is imperative to completely dismantle the entangled systems of violence and oppression
If you are like me and are tired of getting your ideas and visions of peace dismissed as utopias in a negative sense - when they don't fit the Western capitalist idea of a functioning society - then you should definitely check out this panel "Towards Utopias of Peace"
@euprapeace
you know when you read a book so good your whole world turns upside down? you read every page with care and patience so that the book won't end too soon? this is "the land gives, the land wants" by antônio bispo do santos. I just wish everyone could read portuguese to read this.
Come join us for the launch of PRAXIS - a critical student magazine on violence, justice, and peace. This is the result of the hard work of our amazing peace and conflict students. Come celebrate them, listen to their cool ideas, and make some art!

scientists need to make a brave move to understand we cannot only analyze the world, we need to act in order to transform it!
