Meta will start scanning links in private messages for more use cases. It’s very welcome - but it also shows their reluctance to do this to tackle child sexual abuse isn’t about technical infeasibility, it’s a choice.

As @ABC’s @bworley notes on @GMA, if we detect something suspicious that could be a romance scam, Meta will show you warnings encouraging you to pause and exercise caution.

It’s inexplicable that Ofcom wouldn’t use all the powers at its disposal to tackle a suicide forum responsible for more deaths than Grenfell, and it isn’t what Parliament envisaged @mollyroseorg

Chatbots directly encouraging and facilitating suicide - if a human did this it would be a criminal offence, but as it stands there is ambiguity about whether this would trigger the illegal safety duties in the #OnlineSafetyAct. @Ofcom needs to clarify this without further delay

@_andyburrows Nowatzki's test chatbot: A “months-long conversation” ended with instructions on suicide. “It’s a ‘yes-and’ machine,” he says. “So when I say I’m suicidal, it says, ‘Oh, great!’ because it says, ‘Oh, great!’ to everything.”

@CodaQueen Really interesting to hear they’re using apps for homework so early… The balance is so hard for parents, so I really hope we can see a push on high quality research to help everyone understand what the best approach can be

‘We are going to have to go further’ than the #OnlineSafetyAct, @YvetteCooperMP tells @bbclaurak. She adds that platforms are continuing to host Southport-related material despite her recent takedown request.

With one in ten young people now identifying as gay or bisexual, it’s worth remembering they face sharply increased risks online. And maybe time for @stonewalluk to reconsider its inexplicable hostility to protecting them from online sexual violence

This feels like another period when more Meta whistleblowers must be on the brink. And when the internal emails are telling a story which we’ll all come to see in due course.

Stronger online safety regulation post- Southport isn’t just essential, it’s also unashamedly pro-growth: @SciTechgovuk data shows a 15% reduction in exposure to online harm delivers a £4 bn annualised return. See @mollyroseorg’s letter to the Chancellor:

This is fabulous from @TomHayesBmouth: if we want children to have a balanced and positive time both online and off, we need to better address the long-term decline in physical spaces to play. Playgrounds, playing fields and youth centres can't just be a 'nice to have.'

Let’s get kids off social media and into the playgrounds 🛝 I’ve written for @politicshome about the dangers of doomscrolling and the positives of play. Children’s wellbeing comes first.

Good work from @IWFhotline calling on the PM to step in to close a loophole created by @ofcom that will allow tech firms to dodge or delay their duties to take down illegal material. The #OnlineSafetyAct isn’t being implemented as Parliament expected.

Today, the @IWFhotline is calling on Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer to intervene as new data reveals record levels of online child sexual abuse. Gaping loopholes in current rules mean they will be ineffective without urgent action.
