4 booklets encapsulating their 4 exams Yr11s will sit for English Language and Literature.
This plus past papers is all the lessons’ focus until May! 💫
A strategy that I presented to my department today, which I have been focusing on to build Reading Fluency with KS3 is through the acronym - ACT
Emphasis on reading in role/character allows pupils to read with greater prosody and accuracy.
Created a revision booklet for Priestley’s An Inspector Calls which revisits key scenes, characters and includes exam-style questions.

Will print these off for my Yr11s to take home during the holidays!

Moving forward with mock feedback I created a ‘walkthrough booklet’ to support pupils’ understanding of the skills needed in order to answer Language Paper One’s questions better:
- Based on the 2023 AQA Language Paper 1 exam of Martel’s Life of Pi -
With Language there’s always the “how do you even revise it?” question as pupils compare it to Literature revision.
The answer is simple.
Analyse a range of texts + develop your writing skills
To support this I created a Language Paper 1 questions pack for my Yr11 class:
(1/2)
My pupils find using 'Cheat Sheets' helpful in other subjects - somewhat easier to create for Literature, but here's one I created for Language Paper One:
It’s that time for revisiting Poetry (power+ conflict) with Yr11
I created an A4 sheet of key quotes, links to P+C and links to other poems to help support revision
I left the context part for pupils to complete in their own words☺️

Hello, this is my attempt to socialise and put myself out here! 🫣
I am an English Teacher who wants to develop, connect and share pedagogical practices online.

Approached Paper 2 Q5 as a class today.
Love using the “Mesi” method to teach pupils how to structure their points in relation to different aspects (moral, economic, social and individual).
Marking my Yr11 mocks and Q3 for Language Paper One is always a weakness.
To avoid a narrative/limited response and to guide them with a more structured response for their structural analysis I have created this 'help sheet' following the What/How/Why format:
Used
@litfanatic
To Kill a Mockingbird resource to create a Walking Talking Mock lesson for Language Paper One since my Yr11s will begin their mocks.

Attached is the source paper, ppt from Q1-5 with a model answer + a ‘support’ bookmark for pupils
Thinking about the writer’s intent through posing questions to Shakespeare + Dickens and making the pupils respond to their question.
Created this task and watched my Yr11s create amazing responses to strengthen their A03 knowledge for Macbeth and A Christmas Carol🧵:

As Ramadan 2024 is approaching I have a created a Calendar of kind acts, but of course, as an English Teacher I have linked+contrasted key quotes from the Literature texts with Islamic sayings:
Last year I found
@SPryke2
“Quick Planning” sheets an amazing resource for both student’s independent work, and classwork activities.
Inspired by it, I have created 3 sheets using the layout.
Hope this helps as it did with me!

Since it’s November I am sharing this PPT I created for Yr11 pupils on how to write a personal statement - feel free to use for a form time session or an English lesson!

Attached is my attempt with 10 key quotes from ACC - with A01-3 explored in boxed sections.

Hope this is helpful!
I will complete AIC and Macbeth by this week.
Absolutely loving the work from my Yr11s on A Christmas Carol - as a class we’ve been creating revision notes through quote explosions and then putting them to practice doing exam questions and modelling paragraphs together.
#BeautifulBooksOfTheWeek
Reposting this as it worked amazingly well with my Yr11s last year - beginning to use the booklets again, now with my new Yr11s to build consistency with exam skills for their English GCSEs
Grateful that I was able to present my work on building Reading Fluency at the
@TTREnglish
event yesterday!

Thank you to
@TimRasinski1
and
@mtholfsen
for your research and work on fluency ✨
A productive day with Yr 11 - using the examiner’s report I collated for both Macbeth and A Christmas Carol pupils are identifying key information to take away and act upon
A focus for me this year is to give quick and effective feedback to KS3.
Created these codes in student-friendly language to help support teachers during live marking:
First lesson of the year with Yr11 today.
A pupil stayed behind to ask me a question - me thinking he’d ask about the lesson/homework or revision.
Instead:
“Ms Zahid what skincare would you recommend for dry skin?”
😭
I find teaching Duffy’s Valentine a great poem to engage pupils immediately.
Erase any words in the poem which mention “onion” and allow pupils to guess what the ‘romantic’ present is!
Help please: what is your favourite poem to teach? I'm starting poetry with my y10 class tomorrow and I never seem to nail the first lesson. I want to get them hooked!
Hi
#TeamEnglish
, hope everyone is enjoying the half-term!
I have been inspired by seeing a lot of ‘one quote with many different links to themes/events’ resources. (1/2)
And so it begins!
I’ll be presenting at 11:40 on Reading Fluency - nervous but super thankful for the opportunity and to share the space with some amazing speakers !

Revision materials for Yr11’s English mocks after the half-term.
Love how everyone shares resources on EduTwitter, it’s moments like this that are invaluable + to see the pupils appreciation that you want them to succeed by revising efficiently.
Today I modelled to my Yr10 class how to write a high-level analytical paragraph .
The pupils’ responses: Ms Zahid’s brain is ChatGPT
Best compliment! 🥳😭
Starting the Spring term with some of my favourite KS3 SoWs:
- Yr7 Gothic Literature - from Walpole to Susan Hill
- Yr 8 Gender in Literature - looking at the use of language in gender portrayals, beginning with Fairytales
- Yr 9 WW1 Poetry - from Owen to Jessie Pope
Everytime I see anything Jurassic Park related I remember the first time we watched it, and I begged my mum to call my dad to come home from work because the dinosaurs were coming for us😭
@Ms_Holyoake
Hello! Thank you x
I'm not sure why that might be the case but I have attached it as a Onedrive link instead, hopefully it'll help!

These pre-reading questions of ACT are followed by me modelling how to read, pupils doing echo reading and then lastly an ‘I do’ with pupils reading independently and recording themselves for the TEAMS reading progress feature
Thank you all so much for your lovely comments and messages! I will share the booklets soon, been a busy bee but will hopefully post this weekend the links ☺️
